Smartphones & Tablets To Be Primary Screen For Gamers, Says Analyst, Powering 64BN+ Games Downloads By 2017 (3X 2012 Figure)

games apps

Games app downloads to smartphones and tablets are set to grow significantly over the next four years, according to a new report by analyst Juniper Research which projects there will be 64.1 billion such downloads in 2017 — more than three times the 21 billion downloaded in 2012. Key drivers powering this high rate of growth are increasing numbers of free-to-play releases (aka the freemium business model), as well as more sophisticated devices and the continued global uptake of smartphones, says the analyst.

The dominance of freemium as a games app business model is very evident from the analyst’s figures: in 2017, it expects just 7% of games to be paid for at the point of purchase, across smartphones and tablets. In-app purchases and/or advertising are presumably how games developers will be mostly earning a buck.

Juniper says mobile will become the primary screen for gamers, thanks to an increase in the number of “sophisticated games, which allow for truly multi-platform gameplay through the use of cloud technology”. Growth in the quantity of memory on devices is also enabling consumers to download more games. And while Juniper is not expecting smartphones and tablets to kill off dedicated portable gaming devices, it says there’s no doubt consumer mobiles are challenging and eroding the latter market — with players such as Nintendo cutting its sales forecasts by 14% for its 3DS, and 27% for its Wii U.

Social & Casual games will remain the most popular genre downloaded, according to Juniper’s forecast — with over half of all smartphone games downloaded fitting this genre. That’s in keeping with the key characteristics of mobile devices: always-on connectivity, which means being wired in to social services; and portability, meaning these devices are suited for short bursts of casual gaming to kill time.

Looking specifically at tablets, Juniper found their users are especially keen on downloading games, with more than twice the number of games downloads to tablets than smartphones.  ”Tablet games are growing so much because they are such an accessible way for all consumer segments to access games. In particular mid-core gamers, who previously spent a lot of money and time playing games but now have jobs, families or other commitments, are driving this trend,” commented report author Siân Rowlands in a statement.  ”These people are really embracing the tablet form factor, and innovative gameplay devices such as the mobile based OUYA console, really appeal to them.”

Microsoft to show off handful of Xbox 720 games at E3

We already know that Microsoft will be revealing the Xbox 720 on May 21, which is less than a month away. However, the Redmond-based company will continue to showcase the new console that next month during E3 2013, where Microsoft will show off a handful of new games for the next-generation console at the annual expo.

xbox-360-games

According to the invite we received earlier from Microsoft, the company will be revealing a “full lineup of blockbuster games” at E3 2013. We’re guessing that the company will debut a few games for the new console during its May 21 event, but Microsoft says that they will “continue the conversation and showcase” during E3.

The new console from Microsoft will take on Sony’s recently-announced PlayStation 4 during this upcoming holiday season, and it’ll renew the stoking fire that has been burning for the past several years over which console was better: the PS3 or the Xbox 360, only this time around it’ll be the PS4 pitted up against the Xbox 720.

Microsoft’s methods for the Xbox 720 reveal are rather interesting to say the least. The company will be revealing the new console a few weeks before E3, which we’re guessing will be enough time for the hype to build up before going into E3, making the headline story during the gaming expo Microsoft’s new console. We’ll see how that plays out for them come next month into June.

Digital Storm Vanquish fights back against DIY gaming rigs

Many avid PC gamers usually opt for building their own computer, citing lower costs of components over pre-built machines. However, custom PC maker Digital Storm has something to say about that, with the introduction of the new Vanquish gaming PC line. The new computers look to settle the DIY debate once and for all.

Screen Shot 2013-04-24 at 1.21.47 PM

Gaming rigs from boutique computer makers usually cost a couple thousand dollars, but Digital Storm is aiming to put that fact to rest with their Vanquish lineup of gaming PCs that start at $699. The entry level rig comes packing with an AMD FX-4300, 8GB of RAM, 1TB HDD, Radeon HD 7750 graphics, and Windows 7.

Digital Storm says that this only $38 more than what you would pay for these same parts on Newegg, with the company’s most-expensive Vanquish rig only costing $58 more than the same build from parts on Newegg. Of course, this isn’t a huge difference and you’re obviously still paying a bit more if you bought from Digital Storm.

However, this isn’t the cheapest gaming rig we’ve seen from a boutique computer maker, iBUYPOWER’s newer Revolt gaming rig lineup starts at just $499. We ended up reviewing one of their high-end Revolt builds, and we liked it a lot. However, there’s simply nothing more satisfying than building your own PC. No matter which way you go, it seems Digital Storm is at the ready for when you decide purchase a pre-built machine.

Call of Duty: Ghosts appears in retail promo ads

If history is any indication, then it’s quite clear that yet another Call of Duty game will be released this fall. However, we’ve yet to really hear any solid details about the new title. However, leaked box art and promo ads have shown up, with the title of the game being Call of Duty: Ghosts and a release date of November 5, 2013.

The box art first showed up on Tesco Direct’s website, but the listing has since been removed. However, a Target circular has also been leaked, which shows the title art of the game, with a release date of November 5, 2013 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The promotion is for $10 off any game $49.99 or higher when you pre-order Call of Duty: Ghosts.

According to Charlie Intel, who obtained the leak, the new Call of Duty title is also expected to be announced “any day now,” according to their sources. While the rumored release date for the game seems more than plausible, retailers almost always use placeholders until they find out the official release date for a game, so November 5 may not be the actual release date.

We’re not sure if the title of the game is a reference to one of the characters in past Call of Duty titles, named Ghost, who is most-known for wearing that iconic skull-faced balaclava. If the game is, in fact, based around Ghost, it should be quite a doozy, as Ghost is one of the more favorited characters in the series. However, we’ll keep this with a grain of salt for now until we hear official word.

Batman: Arkham Origins rumored to come with multiplayer

The latest installment in the Batman video game series, which is set to arrive on October 25 later this year, is rumored to be packing multiplayer functionality. If true, Batman: Arkham Origins will be the first game out of the series to come with multiplayer where you can play as both the protagonist and the antagonists.

According to Kotaku, two anonymous sources have come forward saying that Origins will arrive with multiplayer, being the first to offer such a feature — Arkham Asylum and Arkham City only came with a single player campaign. Kotaku says that one of the tipsters was the same one who correctly predicted the title of the game, as well as the setting (Christmas Eve with snow in the background).

It’s said that players will be able to play as a member of Joker or Bane’s gang with the task of trying to take down Batman and Robin. As for the bad guys who could be playable and customizable in the game include Killer Croc, Deadshot, Firefly, Black Mask, Deathstroke, and possibly Electrocutioner.

For the time being, it’s unsure whether or not the game will come with multiple multiplayer modes, but sources have seemed to hint at the possibility that there may be more than one mode to play with friends. Of course, we’re taking this with a grain of salt for now, but we should be hearing more about the game as it gets closer to its October 25 release date.

Skyrim gets demoed on Oculus Rift VR headset

The latest in the Elder Scrolls series of video games from Bethesda, dubbed Skyrim, has been ported over to the new Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. YouTube user Chris Gallizzi uploaded a two-minute-long video demoing how the game works with the new Kickstarter-funded VR goggles, and also provided a bit of details along the way.

Screen Shot 2013-04-22 at 10.49.55 AM

The video itself isn’t too action-packed, but it gives you an idea of what a game like Skyrim would look like through a pair of Oculus Rift virtual reality goggles. Gallizzi used Vireio Perception drivers to make the port possible, which are a set of drivers that also support Left 4 Dead, Mirror’s Edge, and Half-Life 2.

Gallizzi said that he tested out the port for around eight hours and didn’t experience any problems along the way, proving that triple-A video games are certainly ready for the virtual reality treatment. As far as his experience with the Oculus Rift itself, Gallizzi said he did get vertigo for a short while when dealing with high altitudes in games, but he notes that he’s “a believer” when it comes to VR.

Gallizzi says that the Oculus Rift is a “step in the right direction,” mentioning that it “brings something new to the living room that was only joked about in sci-fi novels.” With modern video games involving only sitting on the couch and moving your thumbs (or just standing and waving your arms with Kinect or the Wii), the Oculus Rift certainly does add a new element to the video gaming experience.

SimCity getting first major update on April 22

After the whole fiasco with the release of SimCity earlier this year, it seems that things have finally settled, and players are now able to build their cities in peace. However, there’s going to be another server shutdown come Monday, but only to make room for the game’s first major update, which is set to hit April 22.

simcity-580x32512

Electronic Arts has announced that the update will hit on Monday starting at 1 pm PT and will bring the game to version 2.0. It contains “a number of top-requested bug fixes and improvements,” but the publisher was kind enough to provide a massive list of everything that will be provided in the update.

Some of the more important updates address issues with tourists, delays in receiving invitations, and phantom audio problems. It will also provide color-corrects when in a colorblind mode in the HUD, and data maps will show the filtered color when a color filter is enabled, unless you’re in a colorblind mode.

Other than that, casinos will be more profitable, and there will be a slew of fixes to the game’s budget-based systems, including fire, garbage, and sewage. Public transit will also see a number of improvements, including a fix for that annoying infinite loop problem that some players have been experiencing.

OUYA hits 10,000 developers worldwide

OUYA announced today that they have reached the 10,000-developer mark with their portable Android-powered gaming console. The console made its public debut at the Games Developer Conference last month, where it also began shipping to Kickstarter backers. During that time, OUYA had around 8,000 developers signed on.

ouya_tweaked_controller-580x42111

OUYA’s head of developer relations, Kellee Santiago, revealed the new statistic today, and says that it’s quite an accomplishment for the company, especially considering that the console is still in its early stages. She also notes that the number of developers signing on “continues to grow at such a rapid pace.”

Santiago notes that partnerships with larger developers and publishers will be coming up in the next few months, which means we could be seeing some triple-A titles make their way to the OUYA console at some point. However, Santiago says that the competition between triple-A games and indie games is dying, and gamers will simply play games that have quality, whether it’s a triple-A title or an indie title.

The OUYA has been hit with some criticism as of late, when review of the portable gaming console began pouring out, most of which rated the new console bad or mediocre. However, OUYA has reiterated that the console is still in its early stages and isn’t ready for prime time quite yet, but Santiago assures us that the team is working on improving the console.

Xbox 360 best-selling console for 27 straight months in US

Microsoft is back for yet another month of being on top of the gaming console charts. The company announced today that the Xbox 360 has been the best-selling gaming console in the US for the 27th straight month, selling 261,000 units in March, which is down from 302,000 in February, but it seems it was still enough to retain the lead.

Total money spent on the Xbox 360 platform reached $402 million in March as well. This includes hardware, games, and accessories, and the Xbox 360 has sold more of all that than any other gaming console in the US as well, which is fairly impressive, especially for a console that’s several years old and still beat out the new Nintendo Wii U.

As for the most popular video games during March, Xbox 360 versions held six of the 10 positions on the list, with games such as BioShock Infinite, NBA 2K13, Gears of War: Judgment, Tomb Raider, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. BioShock Infinite just released last month as well and it lead the list for most sales in March.

If you’re rocking an Xbox 360, don’t forget about the free Xbox Live Gold weekend that’s going on right now. Silver members can get free access to the good stuff until Monday at 1 pm ET. You’ll be able to use Netflix to watch the new Hemlock Grove original series, as well as take part in double XP in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Far Cry 3, and Assassin’s Creed III.

OUYA shows up at the FCC, has its guts splayed for the world to see

Image

It was only a matter of time, we suppose, before OUYA found itself on Uncle Sam’s table, and the day has finally come, as the open source console has made its way through the FCC. As we’ve steadily uncovered all of OUYA’s secrets since its inception, there’s not much new revealed by the government’s testing. That said, the flayed OUYA appears to be a founding backer edition, with the names of the chosen 11 inscribed on one side, but it’s exchanged the opaque power button on top for a clear unit — indicating that perhaps retail OUYA’s will make it easier for owners to tell when the thing’s on. Want to see the full monty for yourself? Theres’s plenty of pictures of the OUYA’s insides at the source link below.
