GameStop is a retailer where gamers go to buy their computer games and their consoles and maybe some accessories or peripherals. Basically it would hard to mistake GameStop for anything but a retailer of video games and related products, wouldn’t you agree?
Well it turns out that one anonymous 4chan user has come up an ingenious idea that he/she could turn GameStop into their own personal bank. We can’t verify if what the poster said was real, but the technique does sound legitimate although we’re not sure if the folks at GameStop might be too happy with the idea of their company being used as a private bank without their knowledge. Walmart is one of the biggest retailers in the U.S., certainly one that is most frequented by millions of customers everyday. The retailer is now expanding into a new territory while offering its customers more bang for their buck. Walmart has confirmed that it is now going to accept video game trade-ins from March 26th. This means that it will take in a customer’s used video game and offer them a gift card. The gift card would be good to purchase anything at Walmart or Sam’s Club.

GameStop unveils European trade-up program for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One games
Posted in: Today's ChiliGameStop has announced a game trade up offer in some European countries intended to take the anxiety out of purchasing current generation console games. The upgrade offer allows customers in some European areas a limited time opportunity to upgrade the standard edition PS3 and Xbox 360 games for copies that work on the PlayStation 4 […]
The second Kickstarter-funded, Android-powered gaming console to arrive this year — PlayJam’s GameStick — is being delayed once again, this time to October 29th. Folks who backed the game console on Kickstarter will get it earlier in the month, with shipments arriving “three to four weeks before retail.” The rest of us can pick it up at GameStop, Amazon or GAME (for you UKers), and it’ll cost the expected $79.99 / £79.99.
You may’ve noticed we didn’t list that price in Euros, and that’s because the console is launching in the US and UK first, with the rest of the EU, Canada and Middle Eastern territories getting GameStick “prior to the end of year holiday season.” PlayJam CEO Jasper Smith chocks this (third!) delay up to “stringent QA” standards at the company, and PlayJam responding to the criticisms it heard from early beta testers. “Production delays are certainly frustrating, but in certain instances they’re essential,” Smith told Engadget. “There were some issues there that we thought needed to be solved, there were some issues that came out of watching what others had done, that meant that we should solve some other issues. So the unfortunate result is that pushed things back.”
Smith cited various usability issues, from “the way games were being submitted” to “the way that the games actually played,” as fixed problems. “On TV you’ve gotta make it so it’s easy for people to get in and out of a game, start again and all that stuff. And I hope that we’ve done a reasonably good job on that.” We hope so too, and we’ll find out soon — keep an eye out for a review of GameStick in the coming weeks on Engadget.

GameStop’s next-gen digital strategy doesn’t exist, because it doesn’t need to… yet
Posted in: Today's Chili“You’re asking me to… predict the future. I’m supposed to plan for the future.” That’s the non-answer GameStop president Tony Bartel spit out when I prodded him about the company’s digital strategy here at its annual consumer-facing EXPO in Las Vegas. And it’s clearly a touchy subject. It’s not that Bartel refuses to acknowledge and embrace a download-only world — indeed, he believes “things are going to go [fully] digital” — but in his own estimation, that shift isn’t tied to the next-gen of consoles. For a retailer built upon the buy/sell/trade business model for videogames and hardware, GameStop doesn’t appear to have a well-laid digital strategy in the works, nor does it necessarily need to at the moment. With both Sony and Microsoft committing to a friendly used disc-based games policy for their respective black boxes, GameStop’s been given a temporary buffer from the inevitable, allowing it additional time to feel out the digital way forward with a serendipitous mobile crutch.

Earlier this morning, we heard reports from this year’s GameStop Expo saying GameStop managers would be given a free PlayStation 4 and seven games when the console launches on November 15. It looks like the decision of whether or not to choose a PS4 or Xbox One has become even easier now that reports are coming in GameStop managers will also receive an Xbox One.
The announcement was made during this year’s GameStop Expo that’s currently taking place in Las Vegas, just a few hours after it was announced GameStop managers would be receiving a PlayStation 4 and seven games on launch day. GameStop confirmed all of its general managers of the company’s 6,500 stores would be receiving an Xbox One, regardless if they attended the expo or not. We’re not sure at this time if the same arrangement will be made for the free PlayStation 4 consoles.
Unfortunately, what games GameStop managers will be receiving with their Xbox One is yet to be known, although we’re sure the games they’re given will look awfully familiar, especially if they’re placed next to the free PlayStation 4 games they received. In other words, they’ll probably receive the same exact games as they will with their free PlayStation 4, except for, of course, Sony exclusives.
