PS4 now available for pre-order on Amazon at $399 (update: more retailers)

PS4 now available for preorder on Amazon at $399

Microsoft may have been the E3 matinée, but Sony’s late-night showing was quite impressive — offering a gaming device that’s $100 less, with plenty of other notable features to help it stand out of the next-gen crowd. And if you were waiting around until after the PlayStation press conference tonight before deciding which console to grab, it’s finally time to settle on your top choice (if you plan to go with only one, that is). Now that the PS4 has been priced at $399 and a general timeframe of availability has been set for this holiday season, it’s now time to head to online retailers to pre-order a unit of your very own. So far we’ve seen the page pop up on Amazon, though we imagine it will only be a matter of time before several other retailers follow suit. If you know without a doubt that this is the next-gen gaming console for you, you know what to do below.

Update: Well, would you look at that. Like clockwork, GameStop and Best Buy have jumped into the PS4 pre-order fray too.

Nintendo Wii U “Basic Recall” sets stage for E3 reboot

It’s apparent this afternoon that Gamestop is seeing the first of a line of Nintendo-send “Basic Recall” notes for the Wii U basic 8GB model. This model is the smallest and least expensive of the Wii U units out on the market today, this suggesting that the machine is not being called back by Nintendo

Nintendo Wii U 8GB Basic set recall confirmed by GameStop

Reports of a potential recall for Nintendo’s 8GB Wii U Basic starting cropping up yesterday morning, with sources indicating GameStop would no longer be selling the unit come mid-month. Now, CNET has just confirmed with the retailer that this is indeed taking place. On June 18th, all GameStop locations are expected to begin returns of any unsold Wii U Basic inventory. We’ve reached out to Nintendo for comment on the matter, but have yet to hear back. We’ll update this should more official details come to light.

Update: Nintendo offered Kotaku the following statement, attributable to Nintendo of America director of corporate communications Charlie Scibetta:

“There is a current misperception about Wii U hardware. To clarify: Nintendo is working with its retail partners to simply rebalance the stock of the White 8GB and the Black 32GB Wii U models in the market. Consumers looking for either model will continue to find them available.”

GameStop confirms June 1 end to PlayStation 2 trade-ins, will continue selling used stock ‘for several months’

GameStop is shuttering its PlayStation 2 trade-in business as of June 1st, a company spokesperson confirmed to Engadget. “We can confirm that as of June 1st we will no longer be accepting the PS2 console or its related product for trades,” the statement reads. Several of GameStop’s retail locations confirmed to our sister site Joystiq that the June 1st date was accurate after a Reddit posting showed what appeared to be an in-store sign saying as much, and the statement today offers a bit more detail.

For instance, GameStop won’t end sales of used PlayStation 2 hardware, software and accessories — both in store and online — until “several months” after the June 1 cutoff. Those sales, of course, depend on “remaining stock from trades.” Additionally, GameStop reminded us that it’s totally pumped for the upcoming PlayStation 4. “We are very excited about the upcoming PS4 and are making room in our stores for it and other new platforms expected this fall,” the statement says. And hey, with all the extra space available in GameStop stores by “holiday 2013” (when the PS4 is expected to land at retail), it looks like GameStop will be ready for business. GameStop to halt PS2 trade-ins starting June 1

In what we’re guessing is a move to prepare for the PlayStation 4 rush, GameStop has announced that they will begin the process of clearing out PlayStation 2 inventory by halting all trade-ins of PlayStation 2 games and equipment beginning June 1. GameStop has confirmed that all locations in the US will be affected.

slashgear-0000

The PlayStation 2 will be the last previous-generation console that GameStop will support, seeing as how the retail chain ceased Nintendo GameCube and Microsoft Xbox games and gear several years ago. Frankly, we’re surprised that the console has lasted this long in the retail market, considering that GameStop likes keeping up with the curve.

Earlier this year, Sony announced that they ended production of the PlayStation 2 after 12 years of being on the market when the console first launched in 2000. Since then, Sony has shipped 150 million PlayStation 2 consoles worldwide, with 50 million of those going to North America.

While we’re sad to see the PlayStation 2 make its way out, it seems that GameStop is looking to make room for the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox 720 before the holiday season comes around. We haven’t seen new consoles from Sony or Microsoft in a few years, so it’ll be nice seeing the two go at each other again come this fall.

PlayStation 2 Trade-In Program At GameStop Will Stop On June 1

PlayStation 2 Trade In Program At GameStop Will Stop On June 1

If you still have a PlayStation 2 and have been on the fence whether or not you should trade it in for the $7.23 GameStop will probably give you for the aged console, then you have less than a month to decide if you should part with it or not. GameStop has started to display a message at its stores that say they will no longer be accepting PlayStation 2 trade-in starting on June 1, which also goes for all of its accessories and games.

Sony has stopped its shipments of the PlayStation 2 just a few months ago, which we’re sure was one of the last straws for GameStop to consider ending its trade-ins of the console at its stores. Considering the next wave of next-generation consoles will be upon us by this holiday season, it also makes sense to end their PlayStation 2 trade-in program since they’re going to need that extra space for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 trade-ins. Report: GameStop no longer accepting PS2 trade-ins as of June 1st

Now that the PS2’s started taking steps toward retirement with Sony ceasing its production in Japan, it seems GameStop doesn’t plan to keep the console under its roof for much longer. According to a leaked in-store display posted to Reddit by eGORapTure, the gaming retailer will no longer accept the 12-year-old system for trade-ins as, effective June 1st. Our friends at Joystiq contacted multiple stores to confirm the news and many said the policy is indeed set to go into effect. Unsurprisingly, PS2-related accessories and titles will also be refused for trade-ins once the date rolls around. We’ve reached out to GameStop’s corporate representatives for comment and will let you know what we hear back. For now, you can find more info at the via and source links. Well, they gotta make room for those PS4 boxes — however they end up looking, right?

GameStop expands electronics trade-in program

GameStop has been operating a trade-in program for electronics for a while now. This program allows you to trade-in gadgets such as smartphones, tablets, and MP3 players that you no longer need for store credit. That store credit can be used towards the purchase of just about anything else you might desire including video games and gaming accessories.

GameStop has announced that it is expanding its electronics trade-in program to cover additional smartphone models. The trade-in program is now valid for cash or in-store credit on smartphones from Samsung, BlackBerry, and Motorola at all of the game retailers US locations. People looking to trade devices in soon can also take advantage of a special deal.

From now until April 28 GameStop is offering some additional incentives. On items with a trade-in value between $20 and $49.99, you get an extra $10 of in-store credit. Items valued at $50 to $124.99 are eligible for an extra $25 in store credit. If you trade-in an item valued at $125 more you can get an extra $50 of in-store credit.

Customers that are PowerUp Rewards Pro members can get even more extra in-store credit with an extra $15, $35, and $70 of in-store credit for those same three trade-in value levels. The sort of trade-in program is a nice way to get rid of devices you have put in your desk or sock drawer and use the money to buy some new video games or game hardware.

PlayStation 4 demand will reportedly outpace supplies at launch

There is speculation going around that the demand for the PlayStation 4 will outpace the available supply for the console system at launch. Gamestop stated that around 900,000 of its members have signed up for its “PlayStation 4 First To Know List”. While it’s more of a pre-registration than it is pre-orders, Gamestop says that its lists are usually a “strong indicator” for the number of people planning on pre-ordering the device.

PlayStation 4 demand to overwhelm supplies at launch

The news came from Gamestop’s President Tony Bartel. He stated, “Although we have been given no official numbers by Sony, we do believe that demand will far outpace the supply of this product during the launch window”. If his statement is true, the high-demand for Sony’s PlayStation 4 is a good sign for the video game industry. The industry has been on the decline for quite some time now, with recent numbers showing the industry dropping 25% in sales.

Also, in other good news, the PlayStation is looking to launch globally by the holiday season this year. There were rumors circulating around that stated that Europe would have to wait until 2014 to get their hands on the game console due to distribution issues, however Gamestop assures consumers that that’s not the case. Sony has yet to release images of the PlayStation 4, however, it has released information regarding the PlayStation 4′s specs and its peripherals, like its DualShock 4 controller.

The PlayStation 4 is an impressive console. The PlayStation 4 demonstrations showed off the stunning graphics that games on its system will be capable of. There were also a bunch of features announced that make the system much more than a game console centered around the living room. You will be able to use the remote play feature to stream games onto your PS Vita, tablet, or smartphone so that you can play your games anywhere in the house. Check out our PlayStation 4 guide on everything you need to know about the console.
