Origin PC’s EON17 laptop packs desktop performance, with desktop processors

Desktop processors in laptops may not be quite as common as they once were, but Origin PC is keeping the practice alive with its line of high-end gaming laptops, to which it’s now added a new EON17 model. That packs a big 17.3-inch display, along with your choice of processors up to a Intel Core i7 980X, plus dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480M graphics cards, up to 24GB of DDR3 memory, up to three hard drives for over 2TB of storage, and range of other high-end specs that contribute to a starting price of $2,499. Toshiba Qosmio X500 landing September 26 with GTX 460M graphics and a $1,300 price tag

The best things in life, it turns out, aren’t actually free. Toshiba’s decided to freshen up its X500 gaming station with NVIDIA’s new high-end GTX 460M discrete graphics and slapped a handsome $1,300 MSRP on the resulting beast. And a beast it shall be, with an 18.4-inch screen, Core i5 or i7 CPU choices, SSD storage options, up to 8GB of RAM, a backlit keyboard, and simulated 5.1 audio pumping out of Harman Kardon speakers. We had a chance to check out its X505 brother recently and came away impressed by the deep blacks the screen was able to produce. ASUS upgrades G53 and G73 gaming laptops with 1.5GB NVIDIA GTX 460 grunt

Ready to splash the cash on NVIDIA’s fresh new mobile Fermi graphics cards? ASUS is the first company to take the veils off its GTX 460M offering, which it has seasoned with a most welcome addition: 1.5GB of dedicated GDDR5 graphics memory. The ROG G53JW and G73JW machines are the beneficiaries of this upgrade, with both capable of 3D work should you ask them nicely, and offering such tasty options as quad-core Core i7 CPUs, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, 750GB of storage, 16:9 displays (1,366 x 768 on the 15.6-inch G53 and up to 1,920 x 1,080 on the 17.3-inch G73), Blu-ray-writing optical drives, and 8-cell 5,200mAh batteries. The lighter of the two laptops weighs in at 3.6kg, but if that doesn’t put you off, both are available right now at online retailers.

Eurocom serves up GTX 480M SLI and HD 5870 CrossFireX options, seasons with Core i7-980X

It boggles the mind to think that one Fermi GPU could be fit inside a laptop, but two? Eurocom has just outed its 17.3-inch Panther 2.0 mobile gaming station — which looks like a straight rebadge of the Clevo X7200 — with the most overpowered set of component choices we’ve yet seen. You can go SLI with the GTX 480M or NVIDIA’s more professionally minded Quadro 5000M, crank up CPU speed to 3.33GHz and beyond with the Core i7-980X from Intel (yes, the desktop variant), stash up to 24GB of onboard RAM, and jack in up to four storage drives, our preference being for the 2TB of SSD goodness option. Of course, if you prefer ATI’s Evergreen side of the fence, dual Mobility Radeon HD 5870 GPUs are on tap as well. Sadly, we’ve no idea how much these spectacular specs will set you back, but launch is set for later this month and you can always call up and get yourself a quote; we’re guessing it’ll be in five figures.

Eurocom debuts Optimus-equipped B5100M FOX, B7110 FOX gaming laptops

Last we heard from Eurocom, it was touting its massive, workstation-class X8100 Leopard “laptop,” and its now back with a pair of models that are considerably more consumer-friendly — and gamer-friendly, specifically. Those include the 15.6-inch B5100M FOX and 17.3-inch B7110 FOX, which each pack NVIDIA’s Optimus graphics-switching technology (complete with a GeForce GT330M GPU), and a range of other fully customizable options that cover the mid to high-end — your choice of Core i3, i5 or i7 processors, up to 16GB of DDR3 RAM, and support for two hard drives for up to 1.6TB of storage, to name just a few options. Of course, prices will vary wildly depending on the config, but you can grab the base 15.6-inch model for $999, or the 17.3-incher for $1,199.

Clevo W860CU 3D and ASUS G51JX-3D bring three-dee to US laptopers

NVIDIA teased us with the introduction of the 3D-ready G51JX back at Computex (you may remember it as one of the founding “3D PCs“), and now AVADirect is bringing that very machine to US soil. Said rig boasts a 15.6-inch display, Core i7-720QM processor, 6GB of DDR3 memory and a 1GB GeForce GTS 360M GPU. Better still, Clevo’s W860CU offers an identically sized display, NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 285M (1GB), Core i5 or i7 CPU options and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. Both units ship with all the necessary 3D Vision components to get your 3D kick on right from the box, with the ASUS going for around $1,600 and the Clevo for $1,800. Humility is free with purchase, we’re told.

MSI’s Core i7-equipped GT660R makes itself available to US consumers

MSI’s GT660 has been kicking around in various forms for a few months now, but the latest edition (dubbed GT660R) is just now splashing down on a few e-tailer websites. Boasting a 1.73GHz Core i7-740QM processor, 6GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive (7,200RPM), Blu-ray combo drive and NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 285M, this 16-inch beast is more than capable of handling whatever HD media and first-person shooters you’ve got sitting around. ‘Course, you’ll need to be fully prepared to lug around 7.7 pounds of heft, and the 1,366 x 768 resolution is far from ideal, but at least you’re given a 64-bit copy of Windows 7 Home Premium. It’s up for order now at $1,699.99, but unless you’ve got a thing for atypically large pixels, we’d suggest springing for an alternative that’ll display 1080p natively.

Ask Engadget: best desktop replacement laptop?

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Cameron, who’d rather buy the most powerful laptop the world has to offer than subject himself to a “desktop PC.” If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

“I’m looking for a desktop replacement laptop. It needs to have at least a Core i3 processor, 3GB of memory and a 320GB hard drive. Of course, more is always better, but I’m not looking to spend a fortune. Recommendations?”

We’re going to suggest looking Clevo’s way if you’d rather not pay the Alienware label premium, but we’ve got a feeling some folks in comments may know a few more underground avenues for securing a well-built beast-of-a-laptop. Help a brother out, won’t you?

Maingear debuts eX-L 17 gaming laptop

What’s bigger than a Maingear eX-L 15 laptop but smaller than a Maingear eX-L 18? If you said a Maingear eX-L 16 you’d be dead wrong, but if you said a Maingear eX-L 17 you’d have amazingly guessed the name of the company’s latest gaming laptop. As you can see, this 17-incher sticks pretty close to the company’s other laptops in terms of appearance, and Maingear is also unsurprisingly claiming that it offers the “most powerful components ever assembled into a 17-inch notebook.” That includes your choice of Core i5 or Core i7 processors, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870, NVIDIA GeForce GTX480M, or Quadro FX 2800M graphics, up to 8GB of dual channel DDR3 RAM, a max 750GB hard drive or 512GB SSD and, of course, your choice of laser engraving options on the lid. Also like Maingear’s other laptops, this one doesn’t exactly come cheap — configurations start at $1,899.

Apparently designed for gamers and engineers alike, the X8100 packs an 18.4-inch 1920 x 1080 display, a Core i7 Extreme processor, your choice of a slew of different high-end graphics options in single or SLI / CrossFireX configurations (including the ATI HD5870 and NVIDIA GTX 480M), and up to four SATA-300 hard drives in various RAID configurations for up to 3TB of storage — to name just a few standout features. Of course, the laptop does also weigh twelve pounds and has a price tag that’s on a need-to-know basis — but can you really put a price on five different LED color options?
