PIXEL Interactive Picture Frame Adds a Bit of Pixel Art Into Your Room

Because I grew up with video games, pixel art looks great to me whether it’s made of paint, thread or LEGO. But nothing makes pixel art pop more than its original medium: light. Case in point, this nifty interactive picture frame that is simply called PIXEL.

pixel interactive led picture frame by al linke

Invented by Al Linke, PIXEL is an LED display that shows pixel art images or animations. The default build of the PIXEL consists of a frame with 1,024 LEDs arranged in a 32 x 32 matrix, so it’s been designed to scale images or animations to 32 x 32. Linke partnered with several pixel artists to make art especially for PIXEL. They come in the form of free Android apps that you can use to beam the images or animations via Bluetooth. Yep, there’s currently no iOS app, which is unfortunate, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that changes soon.

PIXEL can also be used as a mirror when the LEDs are turned off. It also has a proximity sensor, which programmers can use to toggle or change the animation automatically.

You can reserve a ready-made PIXEL by pledging at least $229 on Kickstarter. PIXEL has been a huge success on the fundraising site. It’s already earned nearly $25,000 (USD) in pledges as of this writing, way more than the $8,000 target and with 48 days more to go.

Linke is also selling a parts kit with only 512 LEDs for the much lower price of $99, but Linke admits that the existing art was made only for the 1,024 LED version. Fortunately you can just create your own art and then send it to PIXEL via an Android device. Or you can just mount a CRT TV on your wall.

Death Star 14k Gold Ring: Impressive. Most Impressive.

That’s no ring, it’s a space station! This men’s 14-karat white gold Star Wars ring features the Death Star on one side, and the Imperial Cog emblem on the other. It has a sandblasted and polished finish that even Grand Moff Tarkin would approve of.

death star ring

The seller, artist Chelsea Swank has also done versions where stones are set in the Imperial Cog and Death Star. If you want, she can even add a Jedi Symbol or Rebel Alliance symbol.

This particular ring will cost you $1,050(USD), but that’s like a trillionth of what an actual Death Star would cost you. And you can’t even put that on your finger. Therefore, by my math, this ring is a true bargain.

Nokia Offers 3D Printed Case Developer Kit for Lumia 820 Smartphones

I’ve long thought that one of the coolest technological innovations in recent times is 3D printing. The technology originally allowed manufacturers to rapidly prototype parts and products. 3D printing technology is far from inexpensive, but the cost has come down as more consumer oriented 3D printers have hit the market. Nokia is now helping people who have access to a 3D printer and might want to create custom shells for the Lumia 820 smartphone.

lumia 820

Nokia has offered new detail on the Lumia 820 3D printing community project. As part of the project, Nokia has offered up 3D templates, case specs, recommended materials, and best practices for individuals to 3D print their own customized shells for the Lumia 820. Nokia calls the materials its 3D Printing Development kit or 3DK for short.

The idea is that individuals can 3D print their own cases for the smartphone or businesses can begin taking orders for customized Lumia 820 shells. I think this is a very interesting idea, not that I expect this to make Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 smartphones any more popular with most users.

Some smartphone manufacturers let users hack the software on their devices, so it’s nice to see someone allowing users to hack the hardware to suit their needs.

$900 LEGO Metal Gear REX Ready to Attack Your Wallet

For those of you who enjoy the Metal Gear franchise, you might be familiar with a little mech that goes by the name of REX. Well, LEGO builder Rags naRock is also quite enamored of the giant robot, and decided to build himself a LEGO-fied version.

But this isn’t any ordinary little LEGO build. This epic creation has articulating joints, and wheels to move it along the ground. This incredibly detailed version of the bipedal tank has every little detail you’d expect, other than an actual nuclear power source and real weapons. I don’t think LEGO is offering those yet – not even in their Technic kits.

You can see how the different components of this mammoth model move in the video clip below:

While it might not look like it, it cost Rags naRock over $900 in LEGO bricks to assemble this mammoth beast. And if you want to build your own, you can grab the LEGO Digital Designer files here. I ran the parts list through BrickStore myself, and it looks like the bricks alone cost about $918.40(USD), plus the many hours of labor it will take to assemble this beast.

X-Wing Fighter Pilot Crochet Helmet: Knit Leader, Standing By

It’s cold in space. Whether you are flying a TIE Fighter or an X-Wing Fighter, you need to dress warmly. Good thing that this X-Wing pilot’s helmet was crocheted to keep you warm and toasty as you zip through the trenches of the Death Star.

This adorable helmet was created by Etsy seller HandcraftedByColleen and it is perfect for long space flights. “Red Leader, this is Echo 7. Are you warm enough? Yeah, me too. This thing won’t protect me in a crash, but I sure am glad that my grandmother gifted the whole squadron these toasty helmets.”

While they’re great in space, the Rebel pilots could have used these on Hoth, to keep warm in their Snowspeeders.

My Little LEGO Post-Apocalyptic Rocking Horse Ponies: The End Times Are Magic

The prophesied Mayan apocalypse didn’t happen. Mostly because there was no such prophecy. But on the off chance that it did happen, Flickr user Matt Armstrong aka monsterbrick made these post-apocalyptic war horses out of LEGO. The fact that he was able to make them even though he could be dead makes them even more impressive.

Matt made nine horses for hell’s babies to play with, each of them with a design in accordance to their name:

Dovahkiin Full Daedric Armor Costume: FUS-RO-WHOA!

Man, look at that armor. It would take me like 400 hours to find all of that stuff in the game, let alone in real life. Look at those swords. This cosplay rocks the world of Skyrim.

This full Daedric Armor suit was built and is worn by ZERIOS88 who is obviously a wizard at making this stuff. He is a hobbyist who likes to make fantasy video game armor and weapons.

This armor is really beautiful. I might be biased because I played so much Skyrim, but I think you will agree that it is pretty spectacular. And those weapons. This makes me want to play the game all over again.

Grenade Necklaces Won’t Blow Your Head off

If I told you that you could wear a grenade around your neck without risk of explosion, would you do it? Well, thanks to one jewelry artist, you can hang a tiny little hand grenade (finger grenade?) around your neck with no worries.

grenade necklace 1

Mathmatiks‘ Pineapple Grenade Pendant is one of the few necklaces that I think would look good whether you’re a guy or a girl. They’re available in either a dark gunmetal tone or a lighter silver tone for $50(USD) each. I prefer the gunmetal design as it’s more faithful to the look of an actual grenade – though these ones still aren’t filled with gunpowder.

If you’re looking to splurge on your explosive projectiles, you can also get a single pineapple or frag grenade, each done up in shiny black with an actual 22k gold-plated handle for $80 each.

While I love these, I’m not sure what the TSA would have to say to you if you wore them through airport security.

Delivery for Mr. Assange

Art is rather like beauty – in that it’s always in the eye of the beholder. One of the strangest art projects I’ve heard of in a while has turned up in the form of a cardboard box packed with a hidden camera. The box was mailed to Julian Assange using the Royal Mail.

art box

Inside the box is a camera set up to take an image of what it sees outside every 10 seconds and posts the image to the web. At first, there was nothing compelling about the images – often nothing but black. The image above is a nice, boring shot of a wall. However, it looks like the package has actually reached its destination as of tonight, as you can see from the images below:

julian assange

Yep, that’s Julian Assange in the flesh. If you’re curious to see what the package (and Julian) are up to, you can follow it live over on Twitter.

julian assange 2

Assange, as you might know, is holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. Assange can’t leave the embassy out of fear that UK authorities will arrest him for his work with his Wikileaks website. Assange was given political asylum by Ecuador in August 2012 and has lived in the embassy since June of 2012.
