i.am not.sosho ab.out will.i.am’s foto.sosho i.phone ac.ces.sor.ies

Last week, entertainer will.i.am talked about his upcoming iPhone camera attachment that would boost the phone’s resolution up to 14MP. The announcement is now official, and here’s a look at how you can make your iPhone into a more more formidable camera. It looks kind of bulky and gaudy, but the iPhone 5 version does increase the camera’s resolution as promised.

The launch event happened in London where will.i.am unveiled devices under the name foto.sosho, supposedly sounding like “Photo Social.” All of the cases come with interchangeable lenses, including a standard, fish-eye, wide, and telephoto. They also have built-in flashes, a built-in sliding keyboard, and a suite of software-based editing, filtering and sharing tools.

The iPhone 4/4S will be limited to these features. The iPhone 5 version that will be released later will feature the 14MP sensor replacement. iPhoneotographers will be able to share photos and connect with others through the site i.am. The iPhone 4/4S models will be available December 6 for £199 and £299 (~$320 and $480 USD) from Selfridges. The iPhone 5 model will arrive next year and no prices have been announced.

While those prices seem extremely high for what you’re getting, the company is pitching these as “fashion accessories” more than just iPhone accessories, which they think gives them the ability to sell them for more.

Santa Hat Earphone Jack Plug Makes Phones Jollier

I know it’s not yet December, but if you’re already feeling Christmas in the air, bless your cheerful soul. Here’s a quirky accessory that lets you plug a hole in your phone with Holiday cheer. It fits into the 3.5mm audio jack, doubling as protection from dirt. It hasn’t happened to my phone, but dirty jacks can cause problems with your gadget’s audio.

The hat is made of plastic, polymer and a bit of fabric all glued together, decorated with acrylic paint and then varnished. Obviously the hat won’t look as nice if you happen to own an iPhone 5 or any other device that has its 3.5mm output on its butt. Maybe someone should make a Christmas stocking plug for those devices.

You can buy the Santa Hat earphone jack plug from MyBookmark for $9.50 (USD). The shop also sells non-Christmas-themed plugs. You Grinch.

Fly the Flag from Super Mario Bros.!

As much as I loved playing through the pipes and snacking on mushrooms in Super Mario Bros., there’s nothing quite as satisfying as making that perfect jump onto the flag at the end of a level. Now you can live out that part of the game in real life, thanks to this life-size flag made to look just like the one from the game.

mario flag 1

It’s made by James Bit, the same guy who brought us those fighting game wall decals and the equally awesome Zelda fireplace and secret passage floor art.

mario flag 1a

The flag is a dead-ringer for the one at the end of each level in Super Mario Bros., complete with a big pixelated green mushroom on a white background. Each one measures 2′ x 3′ and is made from durable nylon, so you can actually fly these outdoors in the wind. I so want to see these flying on every house in my neighborhood.

mario flag 2

You can get your hands on the Super Mario Bros. flag over on Etsy for $50 (USD). I really want him to make the version with Bowser on it next.

James advises: “Sliding down them is not recommended unless you have 6, 3, or 1 second left on the clock.” And if you don’t know what that means, what sort of NES fanboy or girl are you?

[Thanks for the tip, Justin!]

Ready for Takeoff? These Aviation Christmas Ornaments Will Make Your Tree Look Fly

I’ve seen my fair share of geeky Christmas ornaments in recent years, from Star Wars Boba Flakes to Mars Attacks! Christmas ornaments. It’s fun because you get to dress up your tree in ornaments that show off your true, geeky nature. For example, if you’re into sci-fi, then the aformentioned ornaments will obviously tickle your fancy.

If you’re a huge airplane buff, then you’ll probably find these aviation Christmas ornaments off the wall.

PlaneOrnament AThey don’t look like airplanes though, instead, they look like traditional tree ornaments. Upon closer inspection, you’ll see that each ornament features a specific event or special celebration in aviation history, like the 25th Anniversary in Space and the Berlin Airlift. One even shows off the history of the Boeing Flight Test.

PlaneOrnament B

When I was a kid, I remember wanting to be a pilot back then. That was the time when I first heard of Amelia Earhart’s story, and her passion for flying just really got to me. I ended up being an engineer instead, but if opportunity presents itself in the future, I’d definitely jump at the chance to earn my wings. Here’s to hoping.

Each of these Christmas ornaments are available online for $4.71(USD). If ornaments aren’t your thing but airplanes are, then you can find a whole bunch of other aviation-themed stuff on Skygeek.

Dalek Cake Looks Drippy and Delicious

Exterminate your chocolate craving with this insane looking chocolate Dalek cake. It’s loaded with marshmallows and cookies and enough chocolate to warrant a diabetes test. Yum.
chocolate dalek
Zip and nada made this decadent cake several years back, and if you want to try your hand at it, you can find the recipe here. I no longer fear the Daleks. I crave them. Exterminate my taste buds. I won’t run.

This thing is 15″ tall. If you do try to make one, it sounds pretty involved and takes a lot of special items, not the least of which is chocolate. A TON of chocolate. Like, as much as you can carry out of the store legally and send across town in your TARDIS.

170-Foot-Long Trampoline Lets You Jump Merrily Along Your Path

Apparently, the hottest way to travel these days is via trampoline. Remember the trampoline bridge concept that made crossing the river fun again? Well, now you’re about to see a 170-foot-long trampoline pathway that makes commuting fun again.

fast track trampoline 1It’s called Fast Track, and while it looks pretty exciting, the whole concept seems a bit outrageous. For one, I don’t know anyone who can manage to jump all the way across 170 feet of trampoline without falling off (or heaving) at least once or twice. Second, it’s going to multiply travel time by a couple of factors because it’ll obviously take longer to bounce erratically to your destination instead of just walking towards it.

Trampoline

Somehow, I get the feeling that getting people to where they want to go isn’t really the point of this trampoline anyhow, as you can see from this video clip:

According to design firm Salto who are behind the concept:
“Fast Track” is an attempt to create intelligent infrastructure that is emotional and corresponds to the local context. It gives the user a different experience of moving and percieving the environment.

The Fast Track trampoline was on exhibit at the recent Archstoyanie festival in the forest of Nikola-Lenivets, Russia.

Giant 3.5″ Floppy Disk Table Could Store a Bunch of Flash Drives

After you’ve grown tired of your Nintendo controller and VHS tape coffee tables, what’s next? Well if you’re moving your way through the evolution of consumer electronics, then your next move might be this 3.5″ floppy disk table.

floppytable 1

The FloppyTable is made by Axel van Exel and Marian Neulant of Neuland van Exel, and looks just like a giant-sized version of the classic storage medium. Of course, since this version is made from hot-rolled steel instead of plastic, it’s bound to weigh a bit more. The table measures 27.56″ width x 25.59″ height x 17.72″ depth, making it roughly… a crap-ton bigger than an actual floppy disk.

floppytable 2

It’s also got a nifty storage compartment inside, that’s revealed by sliding the metal disk cover to the side. Inside, you can stash your remote controls, or if you still expect it to store data, you can keep a bunch of USB flash drives in there.

floppytable 3

For more info on the FloppyTable, head on over to the project’s website.

And when the 3.5″ floppy table has worn out its welcome in your living room, then it’s time to move on to the iPhone table, right?

Push Button House Unfolds into 5 Rooms in About 60 Seconds

How’d you like it if you could fold up your entire house and store it in a shipping container? Well, that’s basically what artist/architect Adam Kalkin recently did with the creation of his Push Button House. It’s like a Transformer, but in shipping container form.

shipping container pop up house

The 8-foot-wide, 20-foot-long house has 5 rooms inside of it, and starts out looking like an ordinary shipping container. But with the push of a button, the house comes to life, with a complete kitchen, dining room, bedroom, living room and library hiding inside.

shipping container room 1

A series of complicated hydraulics and carefully placed objects ensure the house and its contents fold up perfectly into itself.

shipping container room 2

The interior is all done up in a shiny white lacquer finish for show, but I suppose it could be built out with any design. This is actually the second Push Button House designed by Kalkin, and is much more complex and advanced than the original.

shipping container room 3

The home was recently shown in an exhibition for Italian coffee company illy caffè. Here’s a video from SPACEStv showing off the build process and engineering behind the Push Button House. If you just want to jump to the transforming house part, skip to about 10:40 in the video. (Note that there is some NSFW language in the video clip.)

Gotta love the part at the end where Kalkin admits he doesn’t even know what a Transformer is, despite the fact that he just built one.

Sure, the concept is pretty impractical and anything that’s not glued or bolted down would immediately fall all over the place when its folded up, but it’s still an impressive design.

X-Wing Fighter Made from Beer Cans: Now Let’s Chug This Thing and Go Home!

If you have a bunch of beer cans lying around and no money for Star Wars toys, you can always go on an alcohol-fueled toy creating bender. That’s presumably what happened here, since this X-Wing Fighter is made out of recycled beer cans. Though the end result doesn’t look like drunken art at all.
beer x wing
It was made by Tamás Kánya almost entirely from Kaiser beer cans and even has a little Astromech droid behind the cockpit. Forget making a run at the Death Star, make a beer run and see if you can make one of these yourself.

Pro Tip: Don’t drink and DIY at the same time. Always wait at least an hour afterwards – otherwise your creation will look like something from a Jawa salvage camp.

Samus Aran Amigurumi Plush is a Ball of Joy

Metroid is one of the best classic games ever. If you are a fan, check out this cute and cuddly amigurumi that PixelBlock created. Experience the softer side of Samus and you can’t help but smile.
samus aran plush
For those of you who have been sleeping under a rock for the last 26 years, Samus Aran is the famous intergalactic bounty hunter from Nintendo’s Metroid series, and she was one of maybe a handful of female heroes in video games at the time – not that we knew she was a woman until the end of the game. Now she is all cute and adorable as a handmade amigurumi!

This Samus measures about 3.5″ tall and is hand-crocheted and embellished from an original pattern. She comes complete with a small collectible card and in a handmade themed gift box. It’s a pretty cool find for that Metroid fan on your holiday list. It’s just $25(USD) over on Etsy.
