Fighting Game Backgrounds as Animated GIFs: !THGIF

We’ve seen a website dedicated to videogame logos and another one obsessed with start screens. Redditor RudeBottie has another similarly niche collection of videogame assets: its devoted to the background scene in fighting games. While it’s nowhere near complete you can still lose hours just staring at the collection, because they’re presented as animated .gifs:

According to Redditor horse_you_rode_in_on, RudeBootie’s collection includes backgrounds from 16- and 32-bit fighting games, namely Street Fighter 2: Super Turbo, Street Fighter: Alpha 3, Street Fighter: Third Strike, The Art of Fighting, Last Blade, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, King of Fighters, Samurai Showdown and Vampire Savior.

Pirate-themed CT Scanner Will Scan Your Pirate Booty

It can be scary to get a CT scan, whether you are an adult or a kid. God only knows what that radiation is doing to you. What if you end up like the Hulk? To ease the fears of children who need to endure a trip through the machine, New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital is one place to go.

They are one of the largest children’s hospitals in the country and so they felt it was up to them to make sure they were administering the lowest doses of radiation possible to the kids, so they picked up one of GE’s Adventure Series CT scanners – this one in a pirate theme. (They also make jungle, underwater, summer camp and space themed scanners.)

In addition to the scanner, the entire scanning suite is pirate-themed. Arrrr! Let’s all do it. Free scans on me! Wait. How much? Okay, everybody just enjoy the images. On me.

Rare Breaking Bad Slot Machine: Perfect for Walt’s “Gambling Addiction”

So I have to admit I’m a bit of a gambler. Not that I play all the time, but when I’m in Vegas, all bets are on. And even know I know the odds are dramatically stacked against me, I occasionally still play the slots. Now here’s a slot machine that I’d definitely pump some quarters into (if you still pumped quarters into slot machines.)

breaking bad slot machine 1

This rare “Limited Heisenberg Edition Breaking Bad Slot Machine” turned up recently over on Etsy, and according to its seller, it’s one of just five ever made.

breaking bad slot machine 2

It offers special reels which portray characters from the show (as well as the winnebago meth lab), and has sound samples from the show when you win. Yes, it says things like “I am the one who knocks” and “Say my name.” Though it doesn’t say anything about taking a trip to Belize. And if you get three Saul Goodmans, he’ll bail you out with free spins.

Check it out in action in the short video clip below:

My favorite part is how it plays the theme music when you open the front of the machine. I’m going to guess this isn’t officially licensed Breaking Bad merch, so if you want it, you might want to move quick. Besides the fact, there’s only five of them in existence. It’s available up on HeisenbergLabs’ Etsy shop for $1299 (USD), plus another $199 for shipping in the U.S.

Heroes and Villains Pillow: Park Your Butt on Jabba the Hutt

Ok, Jabba isn’t included in this design, but at least the title rhymed. This cushion urges you to stop trying to pick a side and just park your backside on it. It features some of our favorite heroes and villains.

hero cushion

You can’t have black without white, or light without dark. And you can’t have heroes without having bad guys. All of your favorite characters are here. And completely unlicensed, which I guess gives it a wacky style.

There’s RobotCop, Dark Vader, Adam West and an Imperial Stormtripper, not to mention assorted Powder Rangers and the evil Skeletron.

I’m sure that this balance of good and evil makes it very comfy for your rear end. Ready to redecorate? Grab it over at Firebox for about $54(USD).

P.S. They really should make a Jabba cushion. If anyone can cushion your butt it’s him. He’s one toad away from a massive coronary. How about a Jabba recliner? With Salacious Crumb footstool.

Bigshot DIY Camera Kit: Build & Learn & Point & Shoot

A couple of years ago we looked at a couple of film cameras that you had to assemble before you could use them. The Bigshot camera is just like those cameras, except it’s digital and has a companion website that includes a lot of related information. The idea is to introduce people of all ages not just to photography but to technology in general.

bigshot camera kit

The Bigshot digital camera kit comes with all of the parts and tools you need to build and process your photos, including a screwdriver, a micro-USB to USB cable and a pair of 3D glasses. That’s right, once you’ve put it together you can use the camera to take 3D images as well as panoramic shots to go with the normal mode. The camera has an internal battery that you recharge using the cable, but it also has a dynamo and a hand crank so you can power it yourself. It also has a free software for processing and sharing images.

bigshot camera kit 6 300x250
bigshot camera kit 7 300x250

But as I said earlier, the kit is only half of the Bigshot’s appeal. Its website has dozens of pages of helpful and easy to understand articles related to the camera. There are pages explaining the science behind the parts, an assembly guide and more. The articles make it a lot easier and fun to learn while you assemble and use the camera.

You can order the Bigshot camera from its official website for $89 (USD). I wish Ben Heck or some other modder would release a similar kit for a gaming device.

Nintendo Light Gun Chandelier Zaps the Darkness Away

Why didn’t I think of this? J.J. Hendricks built this awesome chandelier out of old NES light guns. You know, the trusty old orange Duck Hunt zappers.

When you have a huge amount of light guns in stock and they aren’t selling, you can either sigh and move on or you can build yourself a lightgun chandelier. All it took was some light guns, about 20 feet of electrical wire, 12 candelabra sockets and light bulbs.

He had to install it in his warehouse entry way because like so many of us, J.J. has a wife who just doesn’t appreciate his geek decor, and so she didn’t want it hanging over the dining room table.

It cost J.J. about $200 and took about 15 hours to build. Awesome. It’s like a beautiful geek star.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker: The Birthday Cake

Nintendo remade The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker in high definition for their sinking ship the Wii U. Nerdache Cakes on the other hand remade the game’s characters in edible 3D. Her lucky customer had cel shading and ate it.

Nerdache Cakes said that “the whole ship is cake, while the King of Red Lions is carved foam and chocolate.” Mmmm, foam.

This Ball Joint Dragon Is Highly Adorable (and Highly Flexible)

Rarely do you see dragons this adorable. This little guy looks like he just hatched out of an egg and got a part on Game of Thrones. Yeah, he has an agent already. That’s how cool he is.

This awesome hand-crafted dragon is made from ball joints. That’s what gives his armor such a neat look. It is always what allows him to curl up into a little ball come sleepy time.

You know you want one. So do I. Well, if you do, you can check out the creator’s site here for 7000 to 10000 rubles (~$200 to $300 USD). Of course, you’ll have to speak Russian if you want one. It looks like he has several color versions. The black one is the cutest. Who knew that ball joints would make such a neat dragon?

Video Earrings: Stream Clips on Your Lobes

Humans are slowly turning into walking billboards. Beards and thighs have already been turned into prime advertising spaces. The next body part to become a billboard might just be your earlobes. Or rather, what’s hanging off of your lobes, that is, if you happen to be wearing the Video Earrings.

video earrings 1

Its creators have skipped the fancy naming for now, because you get exactly what the name implies. Each earring will have a dangling 2″x1″ screen with a built-in rechargeable battery. It can apparently display slideshows and stream videos for 4-8 hours on a full charge, while recharging only requires an hour.

The Video Earrings can be charged up and loaded with files via USB. Its creators plan to release three capacities for the earrings, 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB for $200, $249, and $300, respectively. However, it’s still up for funding right on Indiegogo, where you can get your very own pair by pledging at least $150. The project still has a way to go to hit its modest $10,000 fundraising goal, so for now you might just have to clip some iPod nanos to your ears instead.

Video Game Book Covers Make You Look Much More Literate

I’m sure your bookshelves are chockful of the classics. Mine, on the other hand have nothing but graphic novels, video games Blu-ray discs and DVDs. Oh, and a bunch of collectible toys and robots. I suppose I’m not that well-read these days thanks to the advent of the internet, and numerous other digital distractions. At least I can LOOK like I’m more of a bookworm if I outfit all of my games with these covers.

video game book covers 1

These custom covers by video game lover JamesBit are perfect for making your game discs look like books. James has come up with a design that’s reminiscent of Penguin Books‘ iconic minimal style, but with an Atari 2600 controller in place of the penguin.

Six bucks will get you a set of three covers, customized to your specific video games and discs. For that price, you’ll only get a PDF that you need to print out yourself, but James does the hard work of making it look good, filling in the design template and prepping the PDF for you. If you have a ton of discs, he’ll cut the price to $1.49 each. Head on over to Etsy to order yours now.
