iMac Pet Bed: The Ultimate Computer for Cats

There’s no denying that cats like technology. Whether they’re playing Fruit Ninja, stepping all over your keyboard, or playing the synthesizer, cats and tech go together like peanut butter and chocolate. So why fight this natural phenomenon? Instead, get your cat a computer of its own.

Okay, this former iMac isn’t exactly a functional computer anymore, but it is a lovely place for kitty to hang out and catch a cat nap. It’s been decked out with a cozy cushion for your pet, then bolted onto a colorful base assembled from an old chair to help give kitty the kind of elevated view you know he demands.

The guys at Atomic Attic upcycle these old iMacs into comfy and stylish pet beds, presumably because your cat wouldn’t be comfortable inside of an original 128k Macintosh, let alone today’s razor-thin iMacs.

Each one is fitted with a custom cushion with a removable slip cover. Prices for these iMac pet beds range from $129 to $229(USD) and can be found over on Atomic Attic’s Etsy shop.

GIF-TY Polaroid Camera: Make Flip Books Quickly and Easily

Flip books are awesome to look at and flip through, but they’re not the easiest or quickest things to make. For one, you’d either have to have a really quick trigger finger so you can take sets of burst shots in rapid succession, or a really steady hand so you can record short clips that don’t look off. For the latter, you’d also have to spend some time in front of the computer, editing shots before you can print them out.

Making the entire process of creating flip books quick and easy is the GIF-TY Polaroid camera concept.

GIF TY

It gives you a physical GIF animation in your hands within minutes of shooting the entire thing.

The GIF-TY is basically a Polaroid camera that uses Z-ink paper. All the user has to do is turn the timer, shoot the 1 to 5 second segment, and hit the print button to make a physical copy of the images. The frames are then ripped and arranged in sequential order, and the flip book is good to go and ready for flipping!

You can check it out in action in the clip below.

The GIF-TY was designed by Jiho Jang.

Full-Scale LEGO X-Wing Fighter Lands in Times Square

This X-Wing Fighter is the largest LEGO model ever created. It is amazing. Astounding! Feel free to nerdgasm, jump around the room, bounce off the walls, and then return to read on.

lego x wing 1

LEGO built this 1:1 scale model of the X-Wing fighter from 5,335,200 bricks. It’s as big as the real thing, and can hold Rebel pilots – even Porkins. This X-Wing reproduces the official $60 LEGO 9493 X-Wing Fighter.

lego x wing 1a

That one is a mere 560-pieces and a few inches long. Yawn. This one has over five million pieces and it’s 11-feet-tall, 43-feet-long, with a 44-foot wingspan and weighs nearly 46,000 pounds. Just like the real X-Wing. Oh, and it took over 17,000 person-hours to build it.

lego x wing 2

LEGO created it to help celebrate the launch of a three-part LEGO Star Wars animated series, called The Yoda Chronicles, set to premiere on the Cartoon Network this May 29th.

lego x wing 3

The engines even light up and produce a roar. Best of all you can see it for yourself if you are in Times Square, where it is currently on display for the next couple of days before it heads out to LEGOLAND California.

LEGO Alien Facehugger: a Minifig’s Worst Nightmare

deviantART member/LEGO enthusiast/alien host Carlos Valero made this life-size LEGO replica of the facehugger from the Alien series. It’s not the scariest replica of the facehugger that I’ve seen, but it is the only LEGO creation that I find repulsive. I never thought I’d be creeped out by LEGO.

Rest in peace Carlos.

I guess we’ll see a LEGO chestburster a few days from now. We need a bigger version of the LEGO Power Loader stat.

Infinity Mirror Computer Desk: To Infinity and Beyond!

Aside from its functional uses, mirrors come in pretty handy when you’re trying to achieve some cool optical illusions. A good example of this is the classic infinite effect. It looks like a pretty complicated effect, but it’s easily achievable and only requires a mirror, glass, and a light source.

Infinity Mirror Computer Desk1

Employing this effect to create an uber cool computer desk is Redditor Jacks_RagingHormones. His setup makes it look like his keyboard is on the surface of an abyss that has no end, which is what makes it so awesome.

Portal Test Chamber Wall Lamp: Proceed at Your Own Risk

dominator24 moved to a new apartment and needed to do something about all the bare walls. They did what any geek would do, and decided to make something cool, instead of just buying another crummy IKEA fixture – a wall lamp based on the level signage from Portal’s test chambers.

portal wall light 1

It was a simple design since it had to be able to fit in the car (due to college, dominator24 moves every three months.) It also had to be cheap. He came up with the idea of using white cloth stretched over a wooden frame with LED rope backlighting.

The detailed drawings are made from cut out bits of duct tape – the black ones on front of the cloth, and the grey ones taped on back.. It’s a simple and cheap way to geek up your room. If you want to try making one for yourself, head on over to Instructables for the details.

Engagement Ring with LEDs: You Light Up My Life. And Finger.

We’ve seen a ring box that lights up, but this one’s even better. Engineer/jeweler/lover Ben Kokes made an engagement ring with LEDs for his now fiancé Julie. As if making an engagement ring wasn’t awesome enough, Kokes also made it so the LEDs would light when he’s near his fiancé.

Because he couldn’t fit a battery on the ring, Kokes designed the LEDs to be powered using an inductive charger. He attached a coil of wire on the ring using kapton tape. The wires were in turn attached to a capacitor and the three LEDs on the ring. Then he built an arm-mounted inductive transmitter.

Here’s a demo of the tender and loving charging:

Men, this is what’s known as raising the bar. Head to Kokes’ website for a thorough explanation of his build. Also Ben, we hate your guts. Signed, the rest of the men on Earth.

Machinarium Robot Cakes: A Point-and-Click Adventure for Your Mouth

One day soon, robots will rule over us and kill us for sport, but for today, it’s nice to know that we can eat them whenever they are a part of a cake. Take that robots. This beautiful robot cake is based on the game Machinarium. If you haven’t played it, it’s a truly beautiful game.
robot cake
The cake is a faithful reproduction of the robots in Amanita Design’s point-and-click adventure game, with many nice details. It even looks like the lights are glowing, even though they aren’t. That’s all amazing skill with edible paint. The robots here look just like the ones in the game. It was made for six-year-old Tate’s birthday by Sweet Disposition Cakes in Adelaide, Australia. That lucky kid got to dig in and eat this thing. I hope he went for the robots first.

Apparently, this isn’t the only Machinarium cake they’ve made for Tate either. Here’s the cake he got for his fourth birthday…

Darth Vader Beer Fridge: Use the Frost, Luke!

Behold the power of the Dark Side. I always knew that Darth Vader had a cold heart and now he is putting it to good use keeping beer and booze chilled. He is basically a caped refrigerator and that’s a far better trick than being good with a lightsaber or Force-choking some guy.

darth vader fridge 1

This Darth Vader fridge is from artist Tom Sachs, who also made this. I always suspected that this was what the Emperor turned Anakin into, so that he could have a walking beer fridge and bring the party with him wherever he goes.

This also makes a duel with Vader a real treat. Just slice him with your lightsaber and put your mouth under the jettisoning stream of beer.

It’s Dangerous to Go Alone! Take This Throw.

It’s probably the most oft repeated seven-word phrase in the history of gaming – but the admonition by the old man in The Legend of Zelda are wise words for life in general. After all, you should always bring a trusty companion on your life’s adventures.

zelda throw

With the help of this handmade throw from Penelope and Clyde, you’ll be able to cuddle up under this pixelated prose whenever you nod off or need to keep warm in your cold dungeon. The 4’3″ wide by 3’4″ long throw is made from acrylic yarn, love and a big bag of pixels.

So grab your sword and shield and battle your way through some Octoroks on the way to Etsy, where you can grab this for $160(USD). Now when are they going to make this version?
