Interactive LED Cube: Rubik’s Cube 2.0

Thanks to touchscreens and other input sensors, we’re finding more ways to integrate physical movement in electronic entertainment. The Princip Interactive LED Futuro Cube is another example. Its sensors work with the embedded LEDs to amuse – or frustrate – you in all sorts of ways.

The Future Cube has multi-axis accelerometers, 56 LEDs and a speaker. The accelerometers enable it to detect gravity, motion and tapping, the LEDs are there to, well, light up, and the cube provides feedback, tutorials and score through the speaker. The cube has 12 game modes, including Gravity Puzzle (similar to Rubik’s Cube but with tapping instead of rotating!), Snake (it slithers through all six sides!) and Cubris (Tetris, except it’s way more confusing!)

Here’s a quick demo of Gravity Puzzle:

Did you understand what was happening in that last video? Neither did I. All the more reason to get one of these toys. You can order the Princip Interactive LED Futuro Cube from ThinkGeek for $100 (USD).

Quirky Kepler Space Kit Lets Anyone Be a Space Photographer

Cameras being sent to the edge of space are nothing new, but it requires a bit of tinkering skills to set up the balloon and camera mount. Quirky wants to help more people send their cameras to space, which is why they made the Kepler Space Kit. They didn’t say anything about retrieving your precious GoPro though.

quirky kepler space kit

The Kepler Space Kit is actually a modification of the Kepler, another upcoming Quirky product. Invented by Brian Erickson, the Kepler was designed for aerial photography – it’s basically a camera mount attached to a kite. The Space Kit takes that to another level, turning this:

Into this:

Here’s a test run of the Kepler Space Kit prototype:

Here’s what the camera was able to capture (you might want to turn down the audio for this, since the audio beacon’s beep will quickly drive you insane.)

You can help dictate the price of the Kepler Space Kit by answering a few questions on Quirky. Before you beam yourself up, keep in mind that Quirky is only selling the parachute, landing legs and the camera mount itself. You’ll have to supply the camera, the weather balloon and the helium, and an audio beacon. The kit is only compatible with GoPro cameras (with the GPS module) and the iPhone 5.

HAL 9000 Life-Size Replica: Buy at Your Own Risk

Few villains enjoy a level of popularity as HAL 9000, which is why it’s not surprising that ThinkGeek’s newly released life-size replica of the computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey is already sold out despite its significant asking price.

hal 9000 life size replica by thinkgeek

The replica is based on “actual movie blueprints” and “original studio files.” I bet there were “geniune film documents” and “authentic cinema records” involved as well. The replica is made from aircraft-grade aluminum and of course has a red LED eye. It also speaks, cycling through 15 phrases taken from the movie. You can trigger its voice using the included remote control, but it can also be triggered by talking to it. The latter is way cooler, but don’t expect it to call you by any other name but Dave.

ThinkGeek is selling the replica for $500 (USD) each. I know you’re already throwing money at the screen and are raring to order the replica but as I said, it’s already sold out. ThinkGeek did say that it will be back in stock by January 15 so hold on to your money until then.

Man Builds Life Size Train Replica in His Basement, Admits He’s off the Rails

We’ve seen plenty of geeky room makeovers in the past months. There was the TARDIS room, the Skyrim basement and the spaceship bedroom. Vaughan, Ontario resident Jason Shron is a train geek – in fact, he makes model trains for a living – so naturally he made a replica of a train car in his basement. Naturally for him I mean.

train replica via rail by jason shron

Jason’s happy place is a replica of a VIA Rail train car from the 80s. According to Global Toronto the exterior of the train is made from drywall, but it’s mostly authentic on the inside. It took him 4-1/2 years to build, and Jason even made fake emergency kits and, on one end of the train, a photo mural depicting a neighboring car to complete the delusion illusion. Shron lucked out with many of the replica’s parts; he got them from an old car that was about to be scrapped.

You can read more about the train at the link and on Jason’s company newsletter. I have a replica of an office space – in fact I’m in it right now – but I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t want to see it.

Minecraft 1:1500 Scale Earth Map: Yo Dawg…

Forget about Second Life or Sims. Planet Minecraft member lentebriesje is currently working on a series of 1:1500 Minecraft maps that are based on our own planet. So you can play on Earth while playing on Earth.

Lentebriesje is using WorldPainter – a free and open-source program that makes it easier to create Minecraft maps – as well as a global relief model of Earth made by the National Geophysical Data Center for more accurate topography. Lentebriesje made the maps as building platforms; he’ll leave the man-made structures up to other players to recreate (or not!). Also there’s nothing to mine in this mini-Earth but stone.

oneTesla Tesla Coil DIY Kit: Make Your Own Singing Lightning

Tesla coils are one of scientists’ go to tool for making science appealing to kids. As if producing your own lightning wasn’t enough, tesla coils can also be used to produce music by pulsing its sparks at appropriate frequencies. You can do all that and more with the oneTesla DIY kit. Although you might not like the “more” part.

onetesla tesla coil diy kit

The oneTesla was conceptualized by Bayley Wang, Heidi Baumgartner and Daniel Kramnik. All three are members of MITERS, a student-run tinkering shop at MIT. Which brings us to the catch of oneTesla: you have to build it yourself. Even the inventors admit that it’s best left to people with advanced skills in soldering and electronics. But that’s partly the point of the kit. I’m sure you’ll learn a lot about electronics even if you just watch or assist in assembling the oneTesla. And once it’s built, you can do this:

Flight of the Bumblebee or Attack of the Mosquitoes? The oneTesla has been such a hit at Kickstarter that its cheaper pledges have already sold out; as of this writing you’ll have to pledge at least $299 (USD) to reserve a unit, and you’ll have to wait until May to receive yours. I say it’s worth it.

Nintendo 64 Stuffed in Game Boy Player, Makes GameCube Backwards Compatible

Console modder Jon Jandran aka Hailrazer is back with another Nintendo related project. Instead of working on portable versions of old game consoles, Hailrazer decided to combine two consoles – the Nintendo 64 and its successor, the GameCube – into one playable unit.

nintendo 64 gamecube mod by hailrazer

Hailrazer crammed the guts of an N64 into the case of a Game Boy Player – the GameCube add-on that allowed GB or GBA cartridges to be played on TV. Because of space constraints, Hailrazer had to fold the N64′s cartridge slot, making it unusable. He loads N64 games on his frankenconsole using an SD card system based on the Everdrive 64 flash cart.

Hey Hailrazer, can you make an Xbox 360 that can also play PS3 games (or vice versa)? Head to Hailrazer’s thread on Bacteria’s Forum for more info on the hack.

Crocheted Magneto Helmet Won’t Protect You from Telepathic Attacks

I’m not sure what’s going on with the Marvel universe right now; the last time I read a comic book with Magneto in it he was taking orders from Cyclops. Whaaaat? I’ll always remember Magneto as the kind of dude who would – and did – rip out a man’s skeleton right out of his body. And that’s why I need this helmet so badly.

This very attractive Magneto helmet was made by Etsy seller/mutant lover/master of crochetism Justine Hofmann.

Mega Man and the Robot Masters Turned Into Clay Men

Rockman Corner reader Ricardo Becker made miniature figures of Mega Man and the various bosses from the first 10 Mega Man games. I’m sure part of him just wanted to squash and tear some of these bosses apart as payback for all the hard times they gave him.

Ricardo used cold porcelain – which is neither cold nor porcelain – to make the figures. They may not be as pretty, polished or accurate as other fan made work, but Ricardo made up for it with the sheer number of figures he made.

The Real Bruce Wayne Has Five Parents, All of Them Guys

Redditor morphinapg used a freeware program called Sqirlz Morph to mash together the faces of actors who have played Batman and make this composite image. The features of the man below is an even blend of Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney and Christian Bale. Or rather an even blend of their pictures.

the real bruce wayne sqirlz morph by morphinapg

As some of the Redditors have mentioned, the longer you stare at the image the easier it becomes to see the different actors. Morphinapg also made an animated gif version of the image. I wonder what the result would be if we blended the faces of every human being on Earth.
