Mass Effect N7 Leather Jacket: Omni-cool

You can easily find replicas of the leather jacket that male Commander Shepard wears during off days in Mass Effect 3. But this April BioWare is going to release an official and limited edition of the casual wear.

The jacket will be made of lambskin leather and will even come with an N7-embroidered garment bag. It will also come with a voucher for a hoodie, although BioWare did not say exactly what hoodie buyers will get. Careful BioWare. The hoodie may not live up to people’s expectations. It may not be the hoodie that they’re expecting to receive after all these years. Next thing you know you’re being blasted with #RetaketheHoodie and petitions to change the hoodie online.

Make Taser-proof Clothing with Carbon Fiber Tape: Defense Against Self-defense

Aside from being very strong and rigid, carbon fiber is also a very good conductor of electricity. Hack A Day Projects member Shenzhen took advantage of the wonder material’s property to make an electroshock-proof coat.

Shenzhen simply stuck strips of carbon fiber tape under the lining of his coat using iron-on hem tape.

Because carbon fiber is more conductive than human skin, the current from the taser will flow through the tape.

Because it’s just a matter of sticking carbon fiber strips, you can actually do this to practically any piece of clothing. Shenzhen also used carbon fiber tape to make heated clothing, although that mod is a bit trickier and requires a power source to work.

A Song of Ice and Fire Battle Damaged Action Figures: Toys of Wood and Paint

[SPOILERS] Craftsman and artist Mick Minogue made action figure-style woodcuts of some of Westeros’ infamously battered – or worse – characters for the Winter is Coming art show at the Ltd. Art Gallery. Needless to say, the figures give away some of the novels’ plot points and are most certainly not for kids.

Mick also made high quality packaging for the action figures, each with a funny blurb that alludes to the fate of the characters. Mick also said that the art show is based not on the HBO TV series Game of Thrones but on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, allowing Mick and the other artists to give their own interpretations of how the characters looked.

That last figure. Man. You’re on Arya’s list now Mick. Mick made eight action figures; if you can’t check them out at the Ltd. Gallery, keep an eye on Mick’s Facebook page, where he’ll share photos of the other toys. Mick also said he might make more aside from the ones he made for the show. It’s not like he’s lacking for material.

Raspberry Pi Bullet Time Rig: Frozen Pi

The folks at PiFace – makers of hardware interfaces for the Raspberry Pi – wanted to make a camera rig that could create the bullet time effect popularized by The Matrix, but they didn’t want to spend thousands of dollars on cameras. Naturally their first instinct was to see if they could use the Raspberry Pi to make a cheaper alternative. To their surprise, their idea worked!

PiFace calls its rig the Frozen Raspberry Pi or Frozen Pi. It consists of 48 Raspberry Pis each with a Raspberry Pi Camera and a PiFace Control and Display interface, all mounted on a laser-cut wood frame. The computers are networked via Ethernet so they can be simultaneously triggered remotely and so that the pictures they take can be sent to a single computer. PiFace wrote a Python script to collect the pictures and arrange them in order. Skip to around 2:17 in the video below to see the rig in action and people in inaction.

Slow down time and head to the PiFace blog to find out more about how they made the Frozen Pi.

Game Boy Costume Uses Huge Cartridges to Switch Games

Back in 2009 we found a Game Boy costume that played Tetris. It had working buttons and had a laptop running an emulator. It turns out that anonymous cosplayer kept on working on his hack and showed off its latest version at the 2014 Ohayocon.

Aside from its much improved case, the costume can now switch games, which is done by inserting equally huge cartridge replicas into a slot… somewhere in the back of the costume. Seriously though Redditor Dacaris says the cosplayer told him that the whole thing is controlled by a Raspberry Pi. The cartridges “had slots cut in them so they would press different button combinations when they were inserted, and those told the raspberry pi which game to load.” Here’s a video of the costume shared by YouTuber MidgarZolom:

I bet he calls his jewels Select and Start.

Inceptor Board Game is Based on Inception: BRAAAAHMM

Nope, you’re not dreaming. An independent group called Pilot Study is working on Inceptor, a competitive board game for two to five players. Based on Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi heist movie Inception, the game is about assembling a team of specialists who will plant an idea in someone’s mind.

inceptor board game by pilot study 620x413magnify

In Inceptor, players are randomly given a mission card. The mission card indicates the idea you have to plant and the number of cards of each job – signified by different colors – that you have to get in order to plant said idea. For instance, in the mission card below you need three Architect i.e. blue cards, four Forger i.e. green cards and so on. Players will then go around the board, and at certain spots will be given a chance to randomly draw these colored cards.

inceptor board game by pilot study 3 620x385magnify

Just like in the movie, each of these jobs are accomplished at different levels of the victim’s dream. Once you have enough cards for a certain job, you can then go to the dream level – represented by the concentric circles on the game board – where that job is to be completed and finish that part of your mission to get points. Jobs that require more cards net you more points.

inceptor board game by pilot study 2 620x413magnify

The moment any player completes all four jobs in his mission, the endgame or “Final Kick” takes place. Just like in the movie, all players have to get out of the victim’s mind. This is done by going to the first or outermost dream level within a set number of turns. Otherwise he will be stuck in limbo. Mechanics-wise, this means a certain number of points will be deducted from each player who gets stuck in limbo.

inceptor board game by pilot study 4 620x413magnify

Even if multiple players complete all four parts of their mission, only one idea can be fully planted in the poor victim’s mind. I don’t know how this idea will be chosen, but the player whose inception is successful will get bonus points. That’s the gist of the game, but there are other rules and mechanics that I didn’t discuss here.

Twirl your browser and pledge at least $49 (USD) on Kickstarter to get a copy of Inceptor as a reward. A pledge of at least $99 will get you The Chemist edition, which includes the aluminum briefcase shown in the video.
