Hasta La Gadget!

Now we’re intrigued. It’s a common (if unconfirmed) belief that the next iPhone will support LTE-based 4G, but the Wall Street Journal now understands through the ever-present “people familiar with the matter” that Apple is taking 4G worldwide. Where the current iPad only supports two LTE frequencies and drops to HSPA+ outside of the US and Canada, the new iPhone will supposedly cover parts of Asia and Europe as well. The exact countries haven’t been outlined, although it’s easy to imagine Apple going for those countries where 4G speeds matter the most: there’s been rumblings of talks with KT and SK Telecom in South Korea, but we could also see France, Germany, Japan and Scandiavian countries in the mix. The rumor hasn’t been confirmed, of course. That said, the iPhone was already purported to be using a new cellular chipset — and a number of carriers, most often in the US, have long said they won’t carry new smartphones unless LTE is part of the package. We’ll know the full scoop on Wednesday.

Media provider 7digital has mostly been making news on the Windows front recently, making its music offerings available for Windows Phone earlier this year and serving up 20 million tracks through its preview version for Windows 8. Now the digital media company is branching out to Toshiba televisions as well, inking a deal to be the European music partner for the Toshiba Places platform. The agreement, which represents 7digital’s first foray into the connected TV market, will allow consumers with a Toshiba Places account to browse through the content provider’s music catalogue, create playlists and stream music directly through the television. The company says the feature should be compatible with televisions equipped with Toshiba Places since May 2011. Five countries — the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain — are slated to get first crack when the service goes live in Europe in September. Amazon’s Appstore has been doing brisk business stateside, and is now ready to sell its wares to Europeans in Germany, France, Italy, the UK and Spain. If you sign up, you’ll be able to create reviews and make one-click payments, and will have access to a huge library of apps from top-tier brands, as well as localized content. The company said purchases can be used “across a customer’s Android devices,” which will let you buy an app once, and use it on any of your tablets or smartphones that support the OS. Apple’s latest tweak to its online store has now included a real-life genius that you can chat to if you’re undecided about buying your next iPhone or iPad. If you’re based in the UK, Germany, Spain or Brazil, you can surf to either product page, and an “Ask Now” button in the top right corner will offer you a choice of a phone-chat, instant messaging or a guided tour. The staffers can even help set up your newest handset once you’ve purchased it — or just let you chat to someone if you’re feeling lonely. If we have a worry, it’s that this might be one of John Browett’s schemes to cut costs, but let’s hope he isn’t dreaming of a future where Cupertino’s personal touch is entirely replaced with an IM chat to someone in a call center.

Have you ever visited a state fair in the US? Picture the fairgrounds — perhaps enlarged several fold — filled to the brim with ultra-slim televisions, giant smartphones, tablets, laptops and enough washers and dryers to keep the entire population of Germany’s wardrobe squeaky clean. That’s IFA. There may not be any deep-fried Oreos at this Messe (though you will find plenty of Brezels and Bier), but there’s more than enough to keep us entertained for a full week, and then some. The fun kicks off tomorrow afternoon with Sony’s annual press conference, followed by Samsung Unpacked where we expect to see a Galaxy S III-like successor to last year’s blockbuster Note. Then chaos ensues, when the two dozen exhibition halls open to the public, and tens of thousands of curious consumers mix with industry reps and journalists, pushing and shoving their way to the hottest gadgets from every category, be it high-end home theater or personal grooming (read: electric toothbrush/water flosser duos). Rest assured that we’ll focus our efforts on the former, and you can stay on top of all the news as it happens using our “ifa2012” tag.
