If, like we are, in love with Panasonic GH Series you will be please to hear that the Japanese manufacturer finally announced the launch date of its new GH3 Series in Japan.
Starting from December 13th you will have to choose between the Body Only GH3 (130,000 Yen), the GH3H and its 14-140mm lens (190,000 Yen) and the GH3A and its X VARIO 12,35mm lens (220,000 Yen).
Now while there is no doubt that the GH3 is an incredible camera, Panasonic’s new steep price just make me wonder why on earth …

The “multimedia photographer” must be a new breed of shutterbugs, as Panasonic has just announced their latest device known as the Lumix DMC-GH3. Not only does it come across as a compact and lightweight device, it is also easy on the eyes, and yet occupies the high end of the mirrorless single lens system camera segment. Despite its apparent beauty, you should take note that more than capable of holding its own in everyday rough-and-tumble situations, shooting perfectly fine even under the extreme conditions of heavy field use.

For starters, the new Live MOS Sensor that has been incorporated is capable of achieving high-resolution images with minimum noise. Throw in the spanking new Venus Engine and you are able to enjoy high-speed, high-quality signal processing under most photo capturing conditions. When these features come together, they will be able to maximize shooting fun as well as operating ease without having you bat an eyelid, and folks will wonder just what it is that made you elevate your photo shoots to a totally different level.

Apart from that, a notable mention of the Lumix GH3 has to be made about its tough body that is rugged enough to stand up to professional use. Made out of a magnesium alloy full diecast body and advanced splash/dustproof construction, it lets you go where no camera has gone before – of course, there are some rugged cameras around, but how many offer DSLR-like image quality while being compact? Three dials on the front and back as well as single-function buttons make up the new controls layout for easier accessibility and use regardless of the condition.

Not only that, the 16-megapixel Lumix GH3 even boasts of integrated Wi-Fi connectivity that helps you expand shooting possibilities, where your smartphone or tablet can double up as a remote control and a remote monitor. It’s not a secret in the least thanks to a video slip-up by Panasonic a few days ago, but today the company is ready to officially announce the successor to its venerable GH2, the Lumix DMC-GH3. This Micro-Four Thirds mirrorless shooter is nearly as big as some entry-level DSLRs, but it’s loaded with features to make up for it. Packed inside its dust- and splash-proof magnesium alloy body, you’ll find a 16.05-megapixel Live Mos sensor that’ll handle 200 to 12,800 ISO natively with extension from 125 to 25,600. Aiding it is Panasonic’s latest Venus engine, which enables 6 FPS burst shooting (20 in 4-megapixel mode).

Notably, Panasonic is pushing this as a “multimedia” shooter given its robust video features. Unlike many ILCs, the GH3 touts unlimited recording time, so you won’t be held back by the likes of the camera overheating — sadly, the approx. 29-minute recording restriction for PAL regions is in place however. You’ll be able to shoot in either MP4, MOV, AVCHD or AVCHD Progressive, with a maximum bandwidth of “72 Mbps (ALL-Intra) / 50 Mbps (IPB).” The formats can be recorded using frame rates of 24, 30 and 60p (excluding MOV and AVCHD), and you’ll even be able work with SMPTE time-codes for syncing footage easily in post production.

On back, there’s an articulating 3:2 614K-dot OLED touchscreen, which can be used for tap-focusing while recording video, along with a 16:9 1,744K-dot OLED view finder — both of which provide 100% frame coverage. Thanks to included WiFi connectivity, you’ll be able to control the camera from your mobile device — although, its HDMI out may be better suited for film-making. Along the side, there’s a duo 3.5mm jacks for monitoring and recording audio straight from the camera with a mic of your choosing or a Panasonic’s optional shotgun mic. Speaking of accessories, an F2.8 35-100mm lens will also be introduced with the camera, touting a dust- and splash-proof design. There’s no word on price just yet for the GH3 or its accessories, but we’re told the camera will hit shelves for a number shy of $2,000 when it’s released later this year. The unit we got eye-on time with was an admittedly rough and early build, but you can check it in detail at the gallery above while we get some more impressions at Photokina. If you’ve enjoyed Panasonic’s previous two mirrorless camera systems, the GH1 and GH2 (pictured above), you’re probably curious as to what the company might have to offer as far as the GH3 is concerned. While these are hardly the official specs, the folks at 43Rumors have allegedly managed to get their hands on the specs of the upcoming GH3 via a “trusted” source.

Like we said, these are not the official specs since it has not be announced yet, but there is the chance that they could be real. In any case we suggest you take this with a grain of salt for now, but you can check out the full spec list after the break and let us know how plausible these specs are! (more…)
