Giveaway: USB Docking Station with VGA Support

This article was written on December 10, 2008 by CyberNet.

startech usb dock-1.png

Important Note: This giveaway is only available for residents of the United States.

This is the one and only hardware item that we have up for grabs in our birthday giveaway, and we’ve been able to play around with it for about a month now. It’s a USB Docking Station by StarTech that also happens to support a VGA input. How does it work? You can basically plug in several USB devices, a VGA monitor, ethernet cable, and more into this slim little dock. The dock then plugs into your Windows computer via a single USB cable.

Now I bet you’re wondering the same thing that I was in regards to the monitor support. With this dock you can essentially plug in an external monitor into your machine without needing an extra VGA port on your graphics card. How well can the single USB cable manage the monitor and other devices/cables plugged into it?

Not surprisingly it has some troubles playing videos or games that require a constantly refreshing screen. The USB cable just can’t provide the same bandwidth that a VGA cable can, plus it is also sharing the bandwidth with any other devices plugged into the dock. If you are able to set the color depth down to 16-bit instead of 32-bit you’ll notice a significant improvement, but you probably still won’t want to watch any videos or anything. If you’re just doing some word processing, web surfing, and other casual work this should suit your needs perfectly.

Here are some of the specs for the USB Docking Station by StarTech:

  • Works with Windows 2000, XP, and Vista
  • Supports resolutions up to 1600×1200 @ 32-bits & 1920×1200 @ 16-bits
  • (4) USB 2.0 ports
  • (1) VGA port
  • (1) 10/100 Mbps RJ45 LAN port
  • (1) 3.5mm speaker output
  • (1) 3.5mm Mic input
  • Dimensions: 7.99″ x 2.75″ x 0.75″
  • Weight: 7.6oz

Phosphor Reveal wristwatch hands-on (and giveaway!)

It usually takes a very particular type of personality to buy a crystal-encrusted object of any sort, much less something that you’d drape across an exposed body part like your wrist. That said, the pure novelty of the movement in Phosphor’s Reveal line of watches might be enough to change your mind: it uses some sort of patented black magic to flip between two different colors of crystals to form digits that indicate the time.

We’ve had a couple of the watches in our possession this week, so we’re able to personally confirm the cool factor. What surprised us a bit is the amount of time it takes for digits to change: depending on how many crystals need to flip, we’d estimate it can take as long as a quarter second or so, because the crystals flip in sequence rather than all at once (perhaps to limit current draw). Like E Ink — another one of Phosphor’s specialties — this “display” is bistable, meaning it’ll stay put without any power consumption once a time is set. Of course, we don’t know exactly how much power it takes to be flipping all these crystals every minute, so it’s an open question how often you’ll need to be replacing the coin cell. The most understated men’s style is — in our humble opinion — simple enough to wear even if you can’t stand the thought of donning dozens of Swarovski crystals, thanks in part to the fact that the bezel is a clean dark metal; of course, if you don’t mind the crystals, Phosphor is happy to help you bling it up. Follow the break for some video of the watches in action!

Oh, we almost forgot: we’re giving two of these away. Right now. Here’s what you need to know!

The rules:

  • Leave a comment below. Any comment will do.
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you’ll be fine.
  • Contest is open to all residents of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Canada (excluding Quebec), 18 or older! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winners will be chosen randomly. Two winner will each receive one Phosphor Reveal wristwatch. We choose which style you get. We can’t honor requests — sorry!
  • If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of the end of the contest. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen.
  • Entries can be submitted until Friday, March 11, 2011, at 11:59PM ET. Good luck!
  • Full rules can be found here.

Google gifts Xoom tablets to game devs at GDC 2011

Google’s notoriously generous at developer events, tossing out free devices like candy on Halloween, but here at the Game Developer Conference in San Francisco it’s letting them flow like wine. Each attendee at Google’s Web Developer Day yesterday got a free Cr-48 laptop, and today the company dished out even greater prizes — either a free Motorola Xoom tablet or a Nexus S smartphone to every soul listening to some exceedingly well-attended technical sessions on Android. That’s certainly one way to attract game developers to your platform.

Giveaway: MediaMonkey Media Manager

This article was written on December 10, 2008 by CyberNet.

mediamonkey.png

Last year MediaMonkey was among the most requested software package that we gave away, and so they were more than happy to help out with a giveaway once again this year. Over the last year they have made a lot of improvements to MediaMonkey 3.0 to make it both more stable and also add support for even more devices.

Just one month ago the MediaMonkey team announced that version 3.0.6 now supports syncing with the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch v2. This news is huge considering how many people have expressed frustrations with not being able to manage the iPhone and iPod Touch outside of iTunes. The icing on the cake would have to be the fact that you can backup/copy media from your iPhone or iPod, which is something iTunes doesn’t allow.

The free version of MediaMonkey will let you do all of the great things that you would expect from a media manager, such as organizing and renaming media in your library. The Gold version, however, takes it a step further by adding some even more awesome features.

  • Manage Multiple Music Collections
Filters and views allow large music libraries to be segmented into sub-collections such as Classical Music, Kids Music, or Contemporary Music, each configured with custom views and playback rules.
  • Automatic Library Monitoring
Use the File Monitor to automatically update your music library to reflect any changes on your hard drive. Additions, deletions, and changes to your music made by other applications are all automatically reflected in your library.
  • Advanced Auto-Playlists
Create advanced Auto-Playlists which automatically generate a music mix to suit your mood, which can then be synchronized with Portable Devices. For example, you can choose to sync a random subset totalling 256 MB of music that match a defined set of criteria. This will help keep the media on your device fresh when you’re not able to fit your entire library on it.
  • Auto-Conversion and Volume Leveling
Auto-conversion allows you to automatically sync or burn tracks no matter what format they’re in, converting tracks on-the-fly to a format that is supported by your iPod/iPhone or other portable device or CD/DVD player, while retaining all metadata. Auto-conversion can also convert tracks to lower bitrates to make more effective use of the limited storage capacity on a portable device.
  • Advanced Search Functionality
Find tracks according to almost any criteria that you can think of. Search for Composer, Year, Beats per minute; find Lyrics, etc.
  • Sleep Timer
Use a Sleep Timer to play your music, gradually fade it over a set period of time, and then turn off your PC.

Engadget Mobile turns 5 today — help us celebrate with a Motorola Aura giveaway!

On this fateful day in 2006, Engadget Mobile was born — and the world has never been the same. Of course, we never would’ve made it this far without you, our dear readers, so we wanted to give something back… and we think you’ll like what we’ve come up with.

The Motorola Aura is one of the most unique handsets ever to come out of Schaumburg, featuring a circular display covered with a 62-carat sapphire crystal along with a rear window that lets you marvel at the action of the watch movement-like swivel mechanism. At its launch in late 2008, it retailed for some $2,000 in limited quantities — and it remains a collector’s item today. It won’t out-game your iPhone or out-email your BlackBerry, of course… but as an evening or weekend phone, there’s probably not a better conversation piece out there. Want it? Read the rules and regs below!

Thanks to Motorola for providing us with the Aura!

More FREE O&O Products: Defrag Professional 11, Unerase 2, DriveLED, and More

This article was written on March 02, 2010 by CyberNet.

o&o defrag.pngAbout two months ago we wrote about how you could grab O&O Defrag Professional 10 for free, but now you can get one step closer to the latest version without dropping a dime. Not only that, but on top of their defragmenting application they have also included versions of Unerase, CleverCache, SafeErase, and DriveLED for the picking.

There’s no telling how long these would be available, and I’d therefore recommend signing up for your free license now. Not only that, but if you ever decide to upgrade to the latest version of the apps you can actually use these to get discounts. Or, we learned with the last O&O “giveaway” that those who are patient will be rewarded. Some users reported getting email offers from O&O to upgrade to the latest Defrag Professional 12 at upwards of 70% off. Not to shabby.

Note: Interestingly the version of DriveLED being given away is the latest.

  • O&O Defrag Professional 11 [Free License] [Download]
Unleash the hidden performance of your computer with the minimum effort. O&O Defrag 11 Professional Edition packs file fragments quickly and securely back together to optimize your hard disk under Windows. Its functionality ranges from a fully automated defragmentation to an individual professional set up. It can do everything a truly good defragmentation software should be able to do. The new background monitoring function helps to prevent fragmentation at source. Newly added and modified files are analyzed and defragmented whenever they are not being accessed. O&O Defrag makes sure that your hard disk is constantly performing at its peak.
  • O&O Unerase 2 [Free License] [Download]
O&O UnErase V2 makes the restoration of deleted data as easy as “a walk in the park”. With the help of a new and one-of-a-kind algorithm, more files can be restored than ever before. Within a matter of seconds, O&O UnErase finds your deleted files and restores them with just the click of a button. The original filename and directory structure are also restored as if nothing had been deleted in the first place.
  • O&O CleverCache 6 Pro [Free License] [Download]
O&O CleverCache 6 Professional is a unique tool that optimizes the File Cache Management for Windows Vista, NT, 2000 and Windows XP. This results in an enormous increase in performance boosting a system’s performance at times to up to twice its original speed. All this is achieved without the need for additional hardware or any reduction in your system’s stability. You simply install O&O CleverCache 6 and you’re ready to go – no need to reboot. It automatically recognizes your configuration, and within 5 minutes you can unlock the hidden resources on your Windows system! The more the file cache grows, the less memory is available for running applications. The result is a significant decrease in performance as requests for memory lead to the so-called “swapping” of memory. This occurs when unused memory segments are paged out to the hard disk’s paging file. Because hard disk access is slow relative to Memory, loss of performance is inevitable. O&O CleverCache 6.0 Professional Edition is optimized to meet the day-to-day needs of individual users. The software is optimized to run on Windows NT4 Workstation, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, Windows Vista and Windows XP Professional.
  • O&O SafeErase 2 [Free License] [Download]
O&O SafeErase V2.0 is THE solution for the secure deletion of sensitive data from your hard disk and offers you the ultimate protection of your private sphere. With just one click of the mouse you can securely and permanently delete files, folders and partitions. The motives for the deletion of files are many. Old e-mail files, internet history, file cache, financial records, company information, and private files ought to be protected from other’s access. The reality, however, is much to the contrary. O&O SafeErase puts a stop to this by not only deleting files, but by annihilating them with the help of recognized and recommended methods. In Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows 2000, and Windows NT, O&O SafeErase will protect your computer from the unpermissive access of others to your alleged deleted files.
  • O&O DriveLED 3 [Free License] [Download]
The number of mobile computers in use in companies has grown dramatically over the last couple years. Just as dramatic is increase in difficulty of servicing these mobile system that are usually being operated in remote locations. The Achilles heel for any notebook is the hard disk, usually overstressed by the sheer frequency of use in a variety of different environments. With this stress on the hard disk comes the risk of hardware failure, which, until O&O DriveLED 3, was an unpredictable gamble. Monitoring all of the internal hard disks of your system, O&O DriveLED 3 examines its “health”, providing you with information from your hard disk’s read/write access to its current temperature. Should signs of problems appear, O&O DriveLED 3 alerts the user, reducing the chances of a hard disk crash or the loss of precious data.

Giveaway: Pingdom – Website Uptime Monitor

This article was written on December 03, 2007 by CyberNet.

Last year at this time we introduced you to a website monitoring service called Pingdom. They were having a special holiday deal where you could get the full year of the service at no cost, and any of you who took part in that deal are probably realizing that you only have about two weeks left before your one year is up. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

Pingdom is the best website monitoring service that I’ve come across. With it you can have the status of your website checked in intervals as small as one minute. They’re not checking it from just one location either. In fact they have 7 servers in the United States, 1 in Singapore, 1 in Australia, 1 in India, 2 in England, 1 in Holland, and 2 in Sweden. All of them will be monitoring the uptime of your computer! Setting up your site is a simple 3 step process that offers plenty of different configuration options:

Pingdom Check 1 Pingdom Check 2 Pingdom Check 3

You’ll notice in the setup process that you can be notified by email and/or SMS text messages. The email notifications work wonderfully, and with the Pingdom Basic plan you’ll get 20 free SMS text message credits. Receiving a text message might be nice if you don’t always have quick access to your email, but it’s not something I’ve found myself needing.

After Pingdom has been running for awhile you’ll be able to gawk at the plentiful reports and logs that they have available for you. For instance, this graph shows how quickly our server responded to the uptime requests that Pingdom hit us with in the month of November:

Pingdom Response Time

If you have a website (or plan to soon) Pingdom is a great tool that will keep an eye on things even when you don’t have time to. Look at it as a guard dog that never sleeps. ;)

–The Giveaway–

We have 50 Pingdom Basic accounts to give away, each one that is valid for one year! One year of the service is worth $119.40, which almost amounts to $6,000 in accounts that we’re offering! You don’t have to comment to win this time around, instead the first 50 users that signup with these instructions will get Pingdom Basic completely free:

  1. Go to our signup page: https://www.pingdom.com/signup/
  2. Select service type Pingdom Basic.
  3. Select payment type Yearly (which is worth $119.40)
  4. Enter cyberxmas into the promotional code field and press the “apply code” button. If there are any free accounts left on this code you will get a message that it is a valid code and you will see the price on the page change to $0.00.
  5. Fill in your account information below. (The cell phone is just there for SMS alerts.)
  6. Check the Pingdom ToS at the bottom.
  7. Press the “sign up now” button.

Giveaway: Multiplicity – One Keyboard/Mouse for Multiple PC’s

This article was written on December 03, 2007 by CyberNet.

Multiplicity Animation

Do you have some computers in your home or at work that don’t get used as much as they should? After all, we can only use one computer at a time, and many users have one computer that they have handpicked to answer to their every need.

You might be surprised to find out that you can actually make use of several computers without sacrificing the ease-of-use that you get by keeping everything self contained on one computer. An application by Stardock called Multiplicity will let you share a single mouse and keyboard between several different computers after you complete the brief setup process. Multiplicity will even configure the Windows firewall automatically so that it’s one less thing you have to do.

Multiplicity Setup

To use Multiplicity all you have to do is move your mouse from one computer/monitor to another. It will feel like you are using a single computer because of how seamless the transition is, but in reality each monitor is connected to its own computer. There are a lot of reasons that I can think of where this would be useful, such as…

  • If you have a laptop and desktop at home. You’ll be able to make use of both computers (maybe just use your laptop for instant messengers and web browsing while you play a game on your desktop).
  • If you have multiple desktops at work. You can use each computer for something different, which is really great for processor-intensive applications such as photo and video editing.

What would a utility like this be without being able to share clipboards between the computers? With Multiplicity you can actually copy and paste text or images from one computer, and then go and paste them onto another computer. If you purchase Multiplicity Pro you’ll even be able to copy and paste files and folders from one computer to another!

Multiplicity will let you customize some important aspects of the application, such as hotkeys that can be used to switch between the various machines. If you wish you can also set it up so that the displays not currently in focus will slightly darken, thereby making it easier for you to see which screen your mouse is currently on. Pretty cool, huh?
