Boomerang Android app tames Gmail inboxes with reminders

DNP Boomerang Gmail app comes to Android, available now

The previously web-only Boomerang app for Gmail is now in open beta on Android. Just another mail app, right? Not quite — Boomerang’s hook is that it can bring unanswered messages back to your inbox. More than a clever reminder system, the app uses gesture controls (swipe right to archive, left for snooze and other options) and can schedule outgoing emails, too. According to TechCrunch, developer Baydin is also working on support for non-Gmail services and a tablet-optimized app. Jump to the Google Play link below to get your hands dirty for free.

Evernote Web Clipper’s new Gmail function saves copies of emails and attachments

DNP Evernote Gmail clipper

Keeping your Gmail account organized isn’t that hard when you can tag and star emails. Evernote Web Clipper’s new function, however, promises easier access to missives you deem particularly important. Once the Chrome extension is installed, it saves any message you want along with its attachments in just one click. One note, though: you’ll need a premium account to search through any attached documents. Note that the Gmail clip will look like a garbled mess (especially if it’s a lengthy thread) on Web Clipper’s preview screen, but on the Evernote app or web portal it will appear nicely formatted. If you think this new function can help you wrangle an increasingly unruly Gmail account, hit the source link below for more info or look for the extension on the Chrome Web Store.

Gmail “categories” update arrives on iOS to join desktop and Android

Now that the Android version has officially (past the APK, even) arrived on smartphones, tablets, and in web browsers for all [Android] devices, Google’s iOS edition of the new category-laden Gmail has been pushed to iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches galore. This update brings largely the same experience to Apple’s mobile operating system that we

Gmail updated on iOS to support new inbox, more notification options

New Gmail interface arrives on iOS devices

Desktop? Check. Android? Check. iOS? Check that one off too. The refreshed Gmail design is now officially available on the App Store for both iPad and iPhone. The update not only brings the new category-based, multiple-tab inbox — bringing it in line with Google’s new interface on other platforms — but throws in the ability to set notification options for individual accounts. According to the change log, you’ll now get “notified for all messages, only important messages, or none at all, on a per account basis.” You’ll also be able to view YouTube videos and Google Maps links through the appropriate app, rather than the browser. Lastly, you can turn off the multiple tab interface if you’re not a fan, but unfortunately Google has restricted the new notification options so they’ll only work with the new inbox. Just as we noticed with Android, we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not available to everyone yet — it likely is undergoing a similar rollout effort. Either way, it doesn’t hurt to click the source link to see if you can grab the update sooner rather than later.

Gmail “categories” update hits Android and web with one-click activation

This week the folks responsible for creating the Gmail environment for email on devices ranging from desktop all-in-ones down to the smallest smartphone have begun unrolling their previously announced “Categories” update. This version of Gmail allows users to employ a rather simple system for categorizing emails, most of this activated and sorted automatically where, in the past, all was based only on keywords and email addresses.

The Android version of this application will be appearing on the Google Play store today for some users, and rolling out to the rest soon for others. If you feel that you need the UI right this minute, you can hit up Android Community for an APK link – easy as pie. From there you’ll see what we’re seeing above and below.

Users will be able to activate this user interface on their desktop machines in web browsers in the upper right-hand corner of the Gmail homepage. Clicking the Gear icon will bring you into a list that has “configure inbox” in it – click it and see!

This update user interface does not make the Gmail experience any more difficult than it has been in the past, and is entirely optional. You’ll not need to separate emails into new categories like these if you’re not all about it, and in Android it’s only about making things just a bit more smooth.

The update should appear immediately after the “configure inbox” button is tapped – the Android user interface update may need a shut down and re-open cycling to happen before any changes can be seen.

Several built-in categories will appear in both your web browser (desktop) and mobile app Gmail environments. You can choose to use these or modify at will. Let us know which sections you’ll be pushing your correspondance into!

Android’s version has features such as one-tap emptying of the trash can and pull-down refresh – otherwise known as swipe down to refresh. This version of Gmail for Android goes by the name 4.5-694836, if you’d like to know, and it’ll be made official in the Google Play store sooner than later.
