Gmail 4.5 for Android rolling out today with multiple tabs, slide-out navigation

Gmail for Android 45 rolling out today with slideout navigation

Gmail’s desktop inbox just went through some pretty significant UI changes, and we’ve just been waiting for Google to update its mobile apps with many of the same elements. The Android app, which Android Police reports is beginning its rollout today, reflects the new multiple-tabbed interface we’ve had the opportunity to play with for the last week — it offers the same five tabs that are found on the desktop version, in addition to a new slide-out navigation interface. We’re still waiting to get official word from Google about the update, but we’ll let you know as soon as we have it. In the meantime, if you feel daring enough to try the new APK, head below to the source link to find a selection of available mirrors.

Update: it looks like the update is starting to appear in the Play Store. Head here to see if it’s available for your device. We’ve had the chance to download it, and can confirm that it offers swipe to refresh in addition to the features mentioned earlier.

Gmail update brings automatic, customizable inbox sorting

Today Gmail will be appearing with an update on several platforms, each of them allowing the mail environment to sort your messages automatically. This update includes several pre-set categories such as Social, Promotions, and Updates, but can be edited and customized according to the users’ preferences.

The new tabs effectively act as separate inboxes for users and are entirely optional – once they appear, they can be turned off in favor of Gmail’s more traditional all-in-one setup. Individual emails inside the main, single email inbox as well as the new categorizes sets can be further marked by Labels – this ability having been part of the Gmail experience in the past, as well.

This update has the potential to effectively sort spam instantly – what remains to be seen is if the algorithms Google has put in play are as slick as they appear in the first promotional video the team has revealed.

While the Gmail team has noted that this experience will begin rolling out to users today, they’ve also made clear that “the next few weeks” are included in the rollout period. This means that for desktop, Android, and iOS, your update might come today, or it might come two weeks from now – we’ll just have to wait and see.

For those of you wishing to get in on the action as soon as possible, you’re to have a peek at the little gear icon in the upper right-hand corner of your Gmail page on the web browser version of the email client, and from there click “Configure inbox” when it appears – it might not be there yet, but the Gmail team says it will be soon.

Google revamps Gmail with tabbed inbox on desktop and mobile

Image

Organization is the key to a happy inbox, and Google’s taking you one step closer to that stress-free experience. The company announced today that it’ll be bringing a new tabbed layout to the desktop and mobile versions of Gmail, safely filing messages where they belong. The redesign lets you add up to five tabs, reorganizing them via drag-and-drop. You can set senders to appear in specific tabs and can move messages up to the primary one with a star. The upgrade is coming to the desktop, Android and iOS version of Gmail in “the next few weeks,” though you can get a sneak peek on your desktop earlier by watching the mail program’s gear / settings menu in the interim. There’s also a video detailing the updates after the break, if you’re so inclined.

Gmail redesign leaks during I/O, shows new navigation drawer and updated inbox

DNP New Gmail design leaks during IO, shows new navigation drawer and updated inbox

During an I/O session called “Structure in Android App Design,” Google leaked a new design for Gmail ahead of any official announcement. The slide shows a revamped navigation drawer and a conspicuous lack of the action bar on the bottom. Functions currently located at the bottom of the screen (like compose and search) have moved up, streamlining the inbox’s vertical structure. Meanwhile, the new navigation drawer makes it easier to access features like the priority inbox and individual labels without having to open separate screens, as is the case on the current Gmail app. There are a few cosmetic changes as well, like the larger stars in the inbox. It’s hard to tell from the image, but one might assume that the navigation bar scrolls down to reveal important functions like trash, spam, and drafts. It doesn’t appear that the inclusion of the screenshot was given much thought — indeed, presenter Jens Nagel left in his personal Gmail address, now blurred out. Stay tuned — we’ll update you as official word on a redesign comes in.
