Nexus 7 LTE arriving as one SKU on multiple US carriers

Google unveiled the new Nexus 7 today, complete with faster internals, as well as an impressive 1920×1200 7-inch display. Another addition to the tablet is 4G LTE, and it’ll be coming to AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile when the tablet releases the US. The best part is, all three carriers will use the same SKU.

20130724_064209-L

The 4G LTE version will only come in a 32GB flavor, while the WiFi-only models will be available in 16GB and 32GB versions. The LTE-ified variant will cost $349 on any of the carriers. This is compared to the $269 32GB version for WiFi only. That’s $80 more, on top of a data plan you’ll be paying for every month.

However, while the tablet has a launch date of July 30, the LTE version will be arriving “in the coming weeks.” We’re guessing that Google is putting the release date into the hands of the carriers, so we should be hearing from AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile at some point in the near future about availability.

20130724_063221-L

We’re also not sure if AT&T or Verizon will subsidize the new tablet. They probably won’t, seeing as how the Nexus 7 is already at a really low price point to begin with, but at least that means users won’t be binded to a contract when they get service for their new Nexus 7. Be sure to keep an out on SlashGear for carrier announcements regarding the new slate.

Nexus 7 commands 10 percent of Android tablets as Google sings praises

This week Google ramps up to their release of the next-generation Nexus 7, they’ve made time to sing the praises of the one that’s already out. Speaking highly of the 7-inch tablet as a machine that’s effectively changed the speed at which Android tablets are being sold, Google asked ASUS Johnny Shih to stand up and wave for a quick “well done!” THen came the big jump.

20130724_061120-L

Noting that the ASUS-made Nexus 7 currently accounted for a cool 1/10 Android tablets sold in the present day, Google made one thing clear: they weren’t about to stop selling it. Noting that the company was very excited about how well the tablet had done up unto this point, they made clear that they’d be moving into the future with a new model.

“We are very excited to talk about both the new Nexus 7 and all the developments in Google Play.” – SVP of Android, Chrome and Apps, Sundar Pichai

New Nexus 7 official with Android 4.3 and 1920×1200 display

We’ve already been treated with all the details we could ever want from the second-generation Nexus 7, but Google is just now making the device official. Google’s new head of Android, Sundar Pichai, revealed the new tablet today, and while it looks rather similar to the previous generation, there are quite a few differences, both on the inside and outside.

20130724_061323-L

As for the outside, it comes with the same black shell and 7-inch display, but the new tablet is just slightly bigger and thinner than its predecessor. There’s also now a camera gracing the back of the tablet, which comes in at 5 megapixels, and that’s paired up with a 1.2MP front-facing shooter. As for the display, we’re not looking at a 1920×1200 resolution over the older 1280×720 resolution. This makes the new display the highest-resolution on the market, according to Google.

On the inside, the refreshed Nexus 7 is running a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro 8064 processor clocked at 1.5GHz with 2GB of RAM and Adreno 320 graphics. The tablet also sports 802.11a/b/g/n wireless, NFC, and Bluetooth 4.0. These internal improvements should make this new model a heck of a lot quicker than the original variant. Google claims it’s 1.8x faster, with the GPU being 4x better.

It also doesn’t hurt that the tablet now comes with wireless charging, making it the next device from Google support such a feature, on top of the Nexus 4. However, only the 32GB version will come with such privilege.

One of the biggest additions, however, is on the software end with an upgrade to the also-just-announced Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, which comes with a slew of new features, as well as a heap of performance improvements to make the user interface that much more snappier and speedy.

The refreshed Nexus 7 still comes with a microUSB for charging, but there’s also SlimPort support for outputting video at 1080p quality. So when will this thing be available? Pre-orders start today with an official launch date of July 30. Prices start at $229 for the 16GB version, and the 32GB version will cost $269. 4G LTE versions will also be available on AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. The LTE version will cost $349 and will only come in the 32GB flavor.

Nexus 7 new vs old: the big pixel boost

This week Google reveals the next generation in their Nexus 7 tablet line, keeping the name and amping up the display resolution to nearly double that of Samsung’s newest effort. While this device takes the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 to the cleaners with its display alone, the most important comparison we can make at this moment is between the Nexus 7 and its biggest competitor – its predecessor!

nexus72vsnexus7

What you’ve got with the new Nexus 7, what we’ll be calling Nexus 7 2 from this point on for ease in differentiation, is a machine that aims to feel rather similar to the original Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 2 works with a new back-facing camera (at 5 megapixels) where the original works with only a front-facing shooter. Both machines’ front-facing cameras are the same 1.2 megapixels strong – on the surface – but we’ll be the judge of which shoots better when we get them both set up next to one another in the field.

Nexus 7 Reboot

The Nexus 7 2 axes the NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor present in the original and brings on a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro. This is a quad-core processor working with Adreno 320 graphics, this taking the tablet down an entirely different avenue for potential features.

Where NVIDIA remains focused in the gaming universe – see SlashGear’s TegraZone tag portal and note how often the Nexus 7 pops up – Qualcomm’s approach in promoting processor power appears to remain a bit more subdued. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon line lives in the Nexus 4 as well, and you’ll not see NEARLY as much press coming from the big Q as you have from NVIDIA for the Nexus 7 and its Tegra 3. We’ll see if this trend continues through this tablet’s release.

eteaga

To back these processors up, the original Nexus 7 has 1GB RAM (LPDDR3) while the Nexus 7 2 rolls out with 2GB RAM (DDR3). The original Nexus 7 originally (not for long, but they’re out there) had an edition sold with just 8GB of internal storage – now both the original and this new edition start with 16GB internal storage and have a 32GB edition as well.

The original Nexus 7 works with a 7-inch 1280 x 800 pixel IPS LCD display working at 216 PPI. The Nexus 7 2 brings on a 7-inch 1920 x 1200 pixel IPS LCD display at 323 PPI. That’s the most dense display to exist on a tablet form-factor device thus far, and it far and away beats out both the “Retina” full-sized iPad (236 PPI) and the iPad mini (163 PPI).

nexus7_original

Original Nexus 7

The Nexus 7 2 has a different shape than the original Nexus 7, to a degree that will require new protective cases, skins, and the like to be made and used – wide open for casemaking opportunities! The original comes in at 7.81 x 4.72 x 0.41 inches (198.5 x 120 x 10.45 mm) while the Nexus 7 2 is 7.9 x 4.5 x 0.3 inches (201 x 114 x 8 mm). The original weighs a little more than the new iteration as well – 11.99 oz (340 g) for the old and 11.2 oz (318 g) for the new.

While the Nexus 7 starts at $199 for its 16GB version and ramps up to $249 for its 32GB version (and $299 for its 32GB, AT&T or T-Mobile versions), it’s unclear what will happen to remaining stock once the new Nexus 7 2 is released in full. We do know that the Nexus 7 2 will change up the pricing scale slightly: 16GB will cost $229 USD while the 32GB edition will start at $269 USD.

And of course there’s the software differences when this new Nexus 7 arrives, but the added abilities of this new model will cut down to minimal once the older model gets its own software upgrade – one we’re sure won’t be far off. Now it’s on you!

Nexus 7 2 pre-orders land at Best Buy ahead of today’s event [UPDATE]

If you haven’t already heard, Google is hosting an event later today that is said to see the official unveiling of Google’s next-generation Nexus 7. However, Best Buy seems to have jumped the gun a bit and have put the tablet up for pre-order on their website, with both the 16GB and 32GB models available.

UPDATE: Looks like Best Buy caught the oopsie and have changed the status to “coming soon”

We already saw a circular ad leak just recently at Best Buy that showed the new Nexus 7 tablet advertised and ready to sell, with a suspected release date of July 30. The ad only showed us a small amount of specs to look forward to, including Android 4.3, but the pre-order page shows that Google is sticking with the Jelly Bean name for this latest update.

The Best Buy listing shows the new Nexus 7 running a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro 8064 processor clocked at 1.5GHz with 2GB of RAM and Adreno 320 graphics. The tablet also sports 802.11a/b/g/n wireless and Bluetooth 4.0. The screen is staying at 7 inches, but will have a smooth 1920×1200 resolution.

Screen Shot 2013-07-24 at 9.12.03 AM

There will also be a 5MP rear camera paired up with a 1.2MP front-facing snapper. You’ll also be treated with SlimPort, which will let you output 1080p video directly from the tablet. The Best Buy listing pretty much gives away everything on the new Nexus 7 just a few hours before the official unveiling is planned to take place.

Perhaps the only thing we didn’t really know before was whether or not Android 4.3 would be Jelly Bean or Key Lime Pie. Rumors in the past have all hinted to the update sticking with the Jelly Bean moniker, but it looks like it’s confirmed now, thanks to this Best Buy listing. Prices for the new tablet start at $229, with the 32GB version priced at $269.

Nexus 7 2 full specs and benchmarks surface with codename “Razor”

This evening, the new Nexus 7 was spotted in a couple shots posted by a Reddit user, complete with packaging and a timestamp. A few short hours later, the folks over at Android Police have produced a full roster of specifications and benchmarks for the 7-inch slate, giving the most detailed look at the upcoming Nexus 7 yet.

1

The Nexus 7 is codenamed Razor, and according to the benchmarks features a 7-inch 1920 x 1200 display, as various leaks have suggested. With the bar on the screen, the actual resolution works out to 1200 x 1824 pixels. Under the hood, there’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core 1.5GHz processor and 2GB of RAM. Andreno 320 is pegged for the GPU.

Also as leaks have suggested, the slate runs Android 4.3, but we’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out what exactly the changes that come with that entail. As far as the hardware goes, the new Nexus 7 is pretty much on par with the Nexus 4, although the Quadrant benchmarks for the slate show it scoring a bit higher at around 5500 rather than 4200.

The Quadrant benchmarking tool is akin to the more commonly known AnTuTu, and looks at 3D graphics, I/O, and CPU. In the screenshot, we see a comparison between this device and some other handsets, with it scoring above the HTC One X, Motorola ATRIX 4G, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Nexus, Optimus 2X, and HTC Desire HD.

A 3DMark graphics benchmark was also run, with Android Police stating they ran it in “extreme” mode with a 1080p action sequence. During the test, the new Nexus 7 scored 7,188, with it staying around the 30fps mark. This is in comparison to the Nexus 4, which scored around 6300, and the previous Nexus 7, which scored 1877 on the Ice Store Extreme test.

Nexus 7 2 appears in leaked photos alongside packaging

The new Nexus 7 appeared earlier this week in press photos, and today we’re getting another look at the device, this time in a couple of shots that include its packaging. The leak comes from a Reddit user who claimed to have just received the device, promising more images to follow shortly, though none have been provided yet.

nexus7-2ndgen-xqckx

The images were posted by Reddit user xQckx, along with a timestamp in the images. One show the box the Nexus 7 2 came in, and the second shows the tablet resting on the opened packaging, with Google’s logo visible in the bottom and some plastic scattered about. Unfortunately, there’s not much to tell about the device from the leak.

The user hasn’t yet responded to any questions about where he or she got the device, and has deleted at least one of his responses in the comment thread, so don’t get your hopes too high about more images. The tablet in the image does match the leaks we’ve seen in recent times, however, including the press shots that surfaced yesterday.

nexus7-2ndgen-xqckx2

The 7-inch slate is said to have a 1920 x 1200 resolution, with large bezels on the top and bottom and slightly smaller ones on the sides. The rear camera is said to be a 5-megapixel offering, with the front-facing camera being 1.2-megapixels. Under the hood, there’s said to be a quad-core processor, and per the images, it looks like a pair of speakers on the back.

The first round of the device is said to be a 16GB offering, while a 32GB and possibly 64GB variety being available later on. It looks like there will be a microSD card for expansion, but that is yet to be seen. The 16GB version is expected to be priced at $229, with different prices coming in depending on various factors.

This New Leaked Nexus 7 Totally Looks Like the Other Leaked Nexus 7

This New Leaked Nexus 7 Totally Looks Like the Other Leaked Nexus 7

Let’s face it. The new Nexus 7 is no longer a surprise. We’ve already seen it. We’ve already seen press shots for it. Hell, we pretty much know all the details. And now here it is in its full packaging, which means someone was able to get a real version of it early. Which means the Nexus 7 is pretty much ready to go.

Nexus 7 2 detailed as press photos leak in full

A full set of Nexus 7 2 – aka the ASUS-made reboot of the popular Android tablet – press images have leaked this morning with front, back, and side views galore. This machine is set to appear with a quad-core processor under the hood of a 7-inch display with an upgraded 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution. You’ll find this machine resembling the original Nexus 7 highly.

transparentlulz

This device appears to be working with stereo speakers mounted on its back, massive bezels to two sides of display up front, two relatively thin bezels to the other two sides, and an ever-so-slightly upgraded user interface. This points toward an incremental update to Google’s mobile operating system Android, this expected to happen on the 24th of July at a special Google event.

This device is said to be working with a 16GB variant for starters, with 32GB and a possible 64GB iteration well down the line. This refers to internal storage space, while a rather noticable back kick-out slot along the top of this tablet indicates we’ll either have storage expansion with a microSD card slot or will have 3G/4G LTE connectivity with a microSIM card slot right off the bat.

The smallest version is expected to ring in at $229 USD initially, while you’ll find this machine to be working with several pricing structures depending on its carrier – if any carriers step up – later this year. With a landscape orientation indication seen due to the way the “nexus” logo sits at the back of this device, we’re expecting a lot more than a new set of photography abilities – there’s a camera too, mind you!

Nexus 7 2 Best Buy ad affirms full HD display

We might have already heard quite a few ramblings of the next-generation Nexus 7, but nothing is quite as solid as a leaked retail store circular ad. A leaked Best Buy ad shows off the next-generation Nexus 7, revealing not only its $229 price tag, but also the 1920×1200 full HD display gracing the front of the tablet.

topper-580x3861

The ad also notes that the $229 price tag will get you 16GB of storage, meaning that the 32GB version will cost just a little bit more, possibly in the $249 or $279 range. Sadly, Best Buy is always pretty vague about advertising products in their weekly ads, so we don’t get treated with any more details than those little tidbits.

However, the Best Buy circular mentions that the tablet will be “available Tuesday.” Seeing as how Google is holding an event on Wednesday this week, the ad could be referring to July 30 as the official launch date of the refreshed Google slate. However, the distribution date for the leaked circular isn’t known, so whatever date “Tuesday” is, is still unknown, but it’s said the circular will begin running on July 28, so we have no reason to not think that the new Nexus 7 will be arriving on July 30.

best-buy_nexus-7

The refreshed Nexus 7 is also said to be getting an update to Android 4.3, and will come with dual cameras, as well as wireless charging, which we’ve already seen on Google’s latest Nexus 4 handset. The tablet is also said to be sporting a quad-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz with 2GB of RAM paired up. Exact specs aren’t known, obviously, but it seems this new Nexus 7 refresh will be a big one, while keeping the same 7-inch screen and mostly the same body style.
