Samsung Galaxy S4 Active mini details stack up: tiny underwater wonder

This week there are several sources running in on the next Samsung device, one that appear to be just as resistant to the elements as the first “Active” here with a “mini” size to boot. This device has been decidedly code-named Samsung Galaxy S4 Active mini here before its official unveiling, and details from several […]

Google’s Smartwatch Rumored To Debut In The Next Few Months

Googles Smartwatch Rumored To Debut In The Next Few MonthsWe have heard the rumors that Google could be planning a smartwatch of their own and with the company’s foray into wearable electronics with Google Glass, a smartwatch is definitely not a stretch of the imagination. Well thanks to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Google’s recent acquisition of WiMM Labs is expected to bear fruit in the coming months and we could very well see Google’s smartwatch launch in the near future. While the specs and features of Google’s smartwatch remains a mystery, it has been suggested that it will center around the Google Now service which we guess makes sense to a certain degree.

The watch will naturally pair with a smartphone, presumably via Bluetooth, hopefully Bluetooth 4.0 LE since this would allow the watch to be used for longer periods of time, versus the Samsung Galaxy Gear which currently sports a battery life of about a day. Apart from that not much else is known, including pricing or availability, but hopefully given that Google has been pretty generous with its price when it comes to their Nexus products, the company’s smartwatch will be just as competitively priced as well. In any case hopefully we will be able to find out just what Google has been up to, so check back with us at a later date for the details.

Nexus 4 Could Still Be Sold After Nexus 5 Launch

Nexus 4 Could Still Be Sold After Nexus 5 LaunchGoogle’s Nexus 5 handset is expected to be announced on the 5th of November at an event held in Tel-Aviv, and while we’re sure this is the Nexus 5 handset that many are looking forward to, what about the Nexus 4? Will it be discontinued? Or will it be kept around and offered at a lower price for those who might find the Nexus 5 a little out of their budget? While a lower-priced Nexus 4 remains to be seen, the ever-reliable @evleaks has revealed that at the very least, the handset will be kept around. This is according to a photo taken of a retailer’s inventory where it lists both the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 in black and white options.

Of course it is possible that the retailer might simply be listing the Nexus 4 stock they have left and that it might not mean Google will keep the handset around, but considering that the handset was recently sighted at the Bluetooth SIG with LTE connectivity on board, perhaps we should not be so quick to write the Nexus 4 off just yet. In any case a lower-priced phone would not be a stretch of the imagination. After all Apple does the same thing with older iPhone models, offering them at cheaper prices as a lower-cost alternative to the current flagship iPhone model, so perhaps Google is looking to do the same, but with the Nexus handsets being pretty affordable as it is, we have to wonder just how much cheaper can it get?

Google smartwatch production talks underway with Asian suppliers

There has been a lot of hubbub centering on smartwatches recently. Rumors continue to insist that Apple will be stepping into the market and Samsung has launched its Galaxy Gear smartwatch, which has proven to be rather unpopular. Rumors began to suggest back in March that Google was working on its own smartwatch. Reports have […]

Get the Google Talk Gadget for your Personalized Homepage!

This article was written on March 14, 2007 by CyberNet.

GoogletalkGoogle has taken an extra step to make using Google Talk as simple as possible.  They’ve created a Gadget specifically for your Personalized Homepage that enables you to chat with your friends and see who is online.

I just added it to my personalized homepage, and I was actually surprised at how much I like it. One of its’ nicest features is that it will tab your conversations up at the top so that it’s easy to switch between them.

They also give you the code so that you can add the Google Talk Gadget to your own webpage.  One of the benefits of this is if you decide to create your own “from scratch” custom homepage, you could quickly and easily add Google Talk.

    Definitely a nice addition!

You can add it to your Google Personalized Homepage by clicking here.

Motorola’s Project Ara joins Phonebloks in modular smartphone ambitions

We’ve discussed the relatively new initiative Phonebloks a couple times this year, a project kicked off by creator Dave Hakkens that has taken to social media to garner mass support for its mission. As it turns out, Motorola has had a similar project in mind — a modular mobile phone with removable parts — which […]

Google Launches Invite System For Early Glass Explorers And Preps Updated Hardware

    frankenglass

Hey Google Glass Explorers, Google thinks you’re keen. Really, they do.

So much so in fact that the company has been quietly working on an updated version of the Glass hardware, and those of you who shelled out $1,500 to be among the first to support the project will be able to swap your existing units for the second revision for free.

Of course, Google Glass is still a ways off from its general launch date – expect it to land some time in 2014 on some sort of Google barge – so naturally Google is gearing up to expand its pool of guinea pigs Explorers. To that end, existing Explorers will have 14 days to choose three acquaintances who are worthy of paying $1,500 for Google Glass.

But let’s back up for a moment. What exactly makes this new iteration so special? So far it seems like a pretty incremental upgrade – unless you’re like me and wear honest-to-goodness specs everyday. Google’s Glass team has confirmed on (where else?) its Google+ page that this version will be able to be fitted with “future lines” of prescription lenses. It’s also going to pack a mono earbud, presumably because the existing bone conducting speaker system isn’t exactly the loudest thing you’ll ever hear.

With any luck, Google will have tweaked the internals a bit too, as the existing loadout is getting pretty long in the tooth. In case you’ve forgotten, it sports a TI OMAP4430 chipset and 1GB of RAM, which essentially means that in an age of incredibly high-powered components in smartphones, current Glass owners are walking around with the equivalent of a Galaxy Nexus on their heads.

And in case you were curious, here’s a copy of the email Google is sending out to eligible Explorers, just so you know what to look out for:

Being part of the Glass Explorer program is pretty insane (good insane): let’s face it, using cutting edge technology that changes every month requires a certain sense of adventure. We’re looking for more Explorers like you to be part of the program, so we’ve opened up a few more spots and this time, you decide who gets in. We want you to invite three people to join the Explorer Program, people who you believe would make great Glass Explorers.

You have 14 days to invite 3 of the best potential Explorers you know to buy Glass.
Just a reminder that all Glass Explorers must:

    • be a US resident
    • be 18 years or older
    • purchase Glass
    • provide a U.S. based shipping address OR pick up the device in New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: thank you for all your feedback and support. It’s because of you that Glass has come this far, and we’re truly grateful.

Google Discusses Details On Free Wi-Fi Service

Google Discusses Details On Free Wi-Fi Service

Google Wi-Fi service has been quiet lately but more details are starting to emerge as they near a public release:

    • The service will be available to Moutain View, California residents.
    • Google will not place ads on the free wireless Internet service.
    • Users will have to create an account but Google does not ask for personal information like your name or address. The account will be used to deny access to the service if your account is flagged as abusive.
    • 1 Mbps transfer speed.
    • The wireless signal will not be able to penetrate buildings. Users who want wireless inside their home or business will have to purchase a Wi-Fi modem for about $100.

I guess if people want the service inside their homes for free then they can afford to get the $100 modem that is needed. It seems like it is taking Google forever to deploy this but I guess this isn’t their normal code and publish. I wonder how far away a release is planned for this service?

Google Glass hardware update soon with three more invites for Explorers

Google will swap Glass Explorer Edition users headsets for an updated model from November, an optional refresh of the hardware that will support prescription lenses among other things, along with adding a broader invite system to get more testers up and running with the wearable. “We are always improving the software based on Explorers’ feedback,” […]
