New Leaked Nexus 5 Shows Off Its Giant Screen and Giant Camera

So a Nexus 5 apparently got left at a bar. It happens! And when it happens, pictures get taken and we lucky folks get to see what one of the most anticipated phones of the year looks like up close. It matches up quite nicely with the leaked phone in the Android 4.4 Kit Kata promo video—horizontal Nexus branding, large camera lens—and definitely seems to be the same LG phone cruising through the FCC right now.

YouTube testing Chromecast support for embedded videos

Chromecast achieves Zen

Anyone wanting to stream YouTube videos through a Chromecast currently has to visit YouTube’s website or run one of its mobile apps. Viewers may soon have more options, though, as Google has confirmed to GigaOM that it’s publicly testing Chromecast support for embedded YouTube clips on third-party web pages. Right now, access is random at best — the “send to” button only appears some of the time, and might not be available to everyone. The company says it’s monitoring feedback from these experiments, however, and it could offer embedded video support to more Chromecast owners if all goes well.

Appearing in the most classic of phone leak locations, the Nexus 5 appears to have popped up in a bar, complete with LG branding on its back. Google’s making Google Voice more secure by requiring you to call from a phone number registered to your account in order to check your voicemails by phone. But maybe more noteworthy is that Google is still making minor tweaks to Voice instead of killing it and focusing on Hangouts already. What’s up with that?

Google Buys Mobile Sharing Startup Bump

Google Buys Mobile Sharing Startup Bump

Bump is a five year old mobile sharing startup that Google has acquired today. Bump’s most popular product is called Bump, its lets users share data between their mobile devices by just bumping them with each other. The app is capable of handling videos, photos, apps and other files. Both users have to open the Bump app on their devices for this to work, gently tapping the devices together will initiate the transfer. Bump confirmed through a blogpost that it has been acquired by Google, while terms of the deal were not mentioned, it is believed that the acquisition might have cost Google roughly $30 million.

The folks at Bump have created another product called Flock. It lets users weed out strangers from images they’ve taken through any camera app. Flock can also be used to create a shared album for friends who’re in a particular picture, relevant pictures can then be added into that album for easy sharing. David Lieb, CEO and cofounder of Bump said that for now, both services will continue to work as they always have, though he does caution everyone to “stay tuned for future updates.” It hasn’t been revealed as yet what David and his team’s role will be at Google.

Google Glass XE9 Software Update Frees It From Tethering

Google Glass XE9 Software Update Frees It From TetheringGoogle Glass will require an active data connection if you want it to function to its maximum capability, which means it would make plenty of sense for those living Stateside to purchase a Bluetooth tethering plan from your carrier, should you want to use Google Glass at just about any time. Of course, all of that might eventually come to an end with the implementation of the XE9 software update, which will free up Google Glass to tether on its own. In a nutshell, all that is required of a Glass explorer is to download the MyGlass app and pair it with Glass.

This should be enough to enable Google Glass to get online, but do ensure that it is paired via the app, as opposed to the smartphone’s settings. Needless to say, this will apply only to handsets that run on the Android operating system since MyGlass has no similar app on other platofrms, iOS included. Apart from that, there is also no guarantee that free tethering will be a feature in Glass when it arrives on store shelves, but should Google decided that they want support from wireless carriers when it comes to marketing Glass, then the free-tethering mode will most probably stop at retail.
