Windows Phone YouTube App Blocked Once Again By Google

Windows Phone YouTube App Blocked Once Again By Google

Back in May the Windows Phone YouTube app was pulled from the store following a cease and desist letter from Google. The internet search giant claimed that Microsoft had developed the app without its permission and that the app violated Google’s terms of service. It also said that the app had features which would stop ads from being displayed, hence the app had to be pulled. Yesterday the YouTube app for Windows Phone was made available once again after Microsoft made a number of changes. Regardless of that, it is now being reported that Google has once again blocked the app.

In a statement to The Verge, Google says that this new app also violates its terms of service. Google says that Microsoft has not made the bowser upgrades necessary to provide a “fully-featured YouTube experience.” Earlier today several users had complained that they were repeatedly encountering errors while trying to use the app. Microsoft has released a statement of its own, saying that its working with Google to resolve this issue. It is not known when the app will be made available once again for users through the Windows Phone Store, for now they’ll have to use third-party apps or the web app of the world’s biggest video streaming website.

Google blocks Microsoft’s Windows Phone YouTube app… again (updated)

Google blocks Microsoft's Windows Phone YouTube app again

Everyone was understandably excited when Windows Phone got its own native YouTube app. That is, until Google decided it violated the terms of service by blocking advertisements and promptly asked Microsoft to remove the app. The two companies kissed, made up and collaborated on a new version that would adhere to Mountain View’s developer guidelines. Unfortunately, it appears that, despite Big G’s involvement, the latest version of YouTube for Windows Phone still has some issues that can’t be overlooked. Only two days after returning, with the ability to upload video added as a bonus, Google has again begun blocking Microsoft’s efforts.

In an official statement YouTube said:

“We’re committed to providing users and creators with a great and consistent YouTube experience across devices, and we’ve been working with Microsoft to build a fully featured YouTube for Windows Phone app, based on HTML5. Unfortunately, Microsoft has not made the browser upgrades necessary to enable a fully-featured YouTube experience, and has instead re-released a YouTube app that violates our Terms of Service.”

Sources tell us that, specifically, Microsoft was not on board with developing an HTML5 based app. Instead the company quietly went back to work on its own native version and reverse-engineered the ad system in order to satisfy Google’s terms of service. Unfortunately, this work-around means that Google can’t guarantee the correct ads will be served up, leading the company to revoke Redmond’s API key. We’ve reached out to Microsoft for comment and will update when we hear back.

Update: A Microsoft spokesperson provided us with the following: “Google is blocking our updated YouTube app for Windows Phone. We are working with them to resolve the issue.”

Update II: And now, Microsoft has issued a longer response, and it’s a doozy. We’ll let you have a gander right here.

Google Maps Introduces Tardis Easter Egg

Google Maps Introduces Tardis Easter EggAre you a huge fan of the Doctor Who series? If you have answered in the affirmative, you will be pleased as punch to hear that the folks over at Google have not yet lost their sense of humor, and hopefully, it will remain that way for a long, long time. In fact, the latest Easter Egg that the Internet search giant has introduced to the world can be found in their Google Maps services. It seems that Google Maps decided that a heady mix of technology and science fiction would do the trick this time around. Whenever you navigate to this location on the London Map, it will show off a U.K. police box in Street View, with the option to double click the arrows that are located in front of the structure.

Upon doing so, you will be taken into a Tardis. Once you are inside (imagine that, without even having to be in the movie set of Doctor Who, now how about that?), you are able to drool over an entire 360-degree view of an incredibly well rendered version of the Tardis’ interior which was brought to public consciousness thanks to the Doctor Who series. Don’t you wish that you have a personal Tardis of your own?

Nexus 7 sleeve shipping refunds surfacing amidst lower Play Store pricing structure

Google launched the sleeve for its new Nexus 7 tablet yesterday, a neoprene protective cover for the slate that was available for purchase in both the U.S. and Canada. The sleeve itself was priced at $29.99, which falls in line with conventional pricing elsewhere. What didn’t match up to expectations, however, was the shipping price. […]

Google Project Loon Delivers 10Mbps For Users

Google Project Loon Delivers 10Mbps For UsersIt has been reported in the news before Bill Gates thinks that Google’s Project Loon might be cool and all, but it will not help stop folks from dying from diseases such as malaria and combat malnutrition in some of the remotest areas of the world. Well, everyone would have a better life with an Internet connection, and that is exactly what Google’s Project Loon has set out to do. The general idea is this – to deliver Internet connectivity to the masses across a vast geographical domain thanks to a network of balloons that happen to float 20 kilometers high up. How do those balloons remain afloat? Stable atmospheric winds at different altitudes ensure that this is achieved, and here we are with additional information about Project Loon.

Thanks to some patent applications that are connected to Project Loon becoming public in the USPTO database, we do know that users can expect around 10Mbps speeds when they are connected to a 50Gbps backbone network of Super Balloons which have been spaced 100 miles apart, blanketing a large area thanks to extremely bright LED free-air optical links. It looks like indigenous peoples will soon be able to jump aboard the Facebook bandwagon, don’t you think so?

Google Fiber has Vudu integration on its set-top boxes, Android app

Google Fiber has Vudu integration on its settop boxes, Android app

The Google Fiber Android app got an update today that adds support for Vudu, adding another over-the-top video service along with Netflix and YouTube. The support pages for its Vudu setup seemingly date back to August 5th, but we haven’t heard anything about the launch from either company. According to its change log, the update will allow viewers to search for and view content across their TV and mobile screens, although the iPad app hasn’t received any update yet. Also new to the Android version are channel shortcuts in the main menu for faster switching back and forth. This addition should bring Ultraviolet digital copies to Google’s TV service, although the support page notes users will have to login to Vudu separately on each set-top box. That is, assuming they’re lucky enough to live in a place where Google Fiber is available.

Google Search Personalized Results Flipped On

Google Search Personalized Results Flipped On

Google regularly keeps updating Search, which is one of its most widely used services. Since last year the company had been running a field trial of Gmail integration in Search, which would result in personalized search results being shown to users. Starting today the internet search giant is flipping on personalized results from Gmail, Google Calendar and Google+ in Google Search. Unless users opt-out, personalized results will now be shown by default to all those who are signed in to their Google account while conducting a web search through the company’s world famous search engine.

Apart from displaying travel documents and appointments, results will also include reservations, flight status, package deliveries as well as receipts from items purchased online. These results can easily be obtained by making a natural language query either by voice or through the keyboard. For example, to find out what your schedule is for the next day, simply search for “what’s my schedule tomorrow,” using any of the two mediums and a personalized card will display appointments saved in Google Calendar. Initially personalized search will only be available to English language users based in the U.S. through desktop, smartphones and tablets. No word as yet when this feature will be rolled out across the board.
