Google Chromecast Amazon Orders Delayed Until October

Google Chromecast Amazon Orders Delayed Until October

Google announced its Chromecast a few weeks ago, and since then, a number of potential cable cutters have purchased the device, some as early as once the company was done with their presentation. Those folks probably are already enjoying their Chromecast, while others who waited to purchase their device are still waiting for their orders to ship, especially those who ordered it from Amazon. Chromecast CyanogenMod tweak enables media streaming from any app

If you’ve gotten the chance to play around with the Chromecast yet, then you’ll know that streaming options are very limited, with only support for Netflix, YouTube, and Google Play. However, while we wait for more streaming services to add support for the Chromecast, CyangoenMod developer Koushik Dutta has a temporary fix, following up with […]

Users report new Nexus 7 suffering from GPS issues

Users report new Nexus 7 suffering from GPS issues

The urban-hunchback shuffle is usually demonstrated by commuters slouching over a phone, in search of a pre-meeting coffee-house. But, if you’re attempting something similar with the latest Nexus 7, maybe leave a little earlier. Why? Because word is that some users are reporting funky behaviour with the tablet’s GPS — perhaps causing a little deja vu for ASUS slate owners . Issues vary from total flake out, to halting after 10 to 30 minutes. Several attempted fixes — including complete reinstalls — haven’t fixed things. Google is aware of the problem, and working on a fix — but no details on when this might be delivered. It’s suggested that disabling Google Play Services might help things. This component of Android is used by other apps though, so proceed with caution. Is it affecting you? Let us know in the comments.

Google Wallet dropping NFC loyalty points and gift cards

DNP Google deactivating NFC functionality for loyalty and gift cards August 21st

Google is fundamentally changing how an aspect of Wallet works. Again. On August 21st, Mountain View is turning NFC functionality off for Wallet-stored gift and loyalty cards and recommends spending any gift card balances before the deadline later this month (i.e., within 12 days from now). However, if you still have the physical cards, you’re in the clear and can use them without worry. The search giant stressed that it’s working with retailers on other options for gift and loyalty card redemption, and that this latest change would not affect other aspects of the Wallet service, including its ability to handle debit or credit card transactions.

Loyalty program linking is something Google has been showing off since Wallet was first detailed, so it’s curious to see the service suddenly being limited like this. When we asked for clarification, a company spokesperson replied that there wasn’t much more they could share. Page and Co. said its working on a solution though, and will have details to talk about “soon.”

Nexus 7 tablet owners reporting GPS problems

Google‘s new Nexus 7 tablet is garnering a fair bit of complaints from users who are reportedly having problems using GPS navigation with the recently launched slate. Complaints are lighting up forums across the Internet, including over on Google’s own product forums, all of them sharing the same story: GPS works fine for X amount […]

Google Play Store launches textbooks in time for fall semester

On July 24, we reported that Google would be adding textbooks to the Play Store some time this month, doing so in time for students to get their hands (er, tablets) on digital textbooks before the fall semester kicks off. As it turns out, today was that day, and the Google Play Store is now […]

Textbooks now available through Google Play Books in US, iOS app updated to match

    Google Play Books textbooks

Google promised us that it would offer textbooks through Google Play Books this month, and it’s living up to its word. American students can now buy educational titles or rent them for six months, with prices frequently undercutting paper editions. Appropriately, Google has updated its Google Play Books app for iOS to support rentals like its Android and web counterparts. The launch is a painful reminder that the fall semester is just around the corner, but college-goers who want to be prepared can check out the source links.

Google implements local business AdWords to Maps on Android and iOS

DNP Google adds AdWords to Maps

Love ’em, ignore ’em or pay a buck to get rid of them, mobile ads are more than just a waste of space, they’re almost a necessary evil. To that effect, Google Maps is populating its search results with local — and hopefully relevant — AdWords starting today. Let’s say you’re looking for a taqueria in Bushwick, Brooklyn; if you’re running the latest version of the app, an ad for Tortilleria Mexicana Los Hermanos could appear at the bottom of your screen. Tapping it brings up a card with review ratings, a call shortcut and sharing buttons. From what we’ve seen, it’s unobtrusive and actually kind of helpful, unlike some of Mountain View’s other advertising experiments. Now, about those tacos…

Unlock Chromecast’s incognito mode to keep your browser history clean

Chromecast is a pretty neat little gadget, but there are some things you might not want showing up in your browser history — we’ll leave it to your imagination as to what those things might be. With that in mind, the folks at Android Central have put together a brief walkthrough to explain how to use incognito tabs with Chromecast. It’s pretty much the same way you’d access any extension in Chrome’s disposable browser session: just type in “Chrome://extensions,” find the Google Cast section and select the “Allow in incognito” option. While we’re the last people to judge how you choose to use your dongle, some things should probably be kept private.
