Android 4.3 update causing problems with Nexus 4 handsets, rendering some unusable

While Android 4.3 is a relatively minor upgrade in the grand scheme of things — bringing restricted profiles and some added graphical grunt to the platform — it seems that the new OS version is wreaking havoc on some Nexus 4 devices. On Google’s Product Forums, most people having problems report that after the update is downloaded and installed, their handsets either freeze on the ‘X’ splash screen or get stuck in a never-ending boot loop. For now, folks report that the only fix is to factory reset their handsets or flash to an older version of Android, and lose all of their saved data in the process. While there are no shortage of people apparently stuck in update purgatory, it’s unclear exactly how widespread the problem is; our own in-house Nexus 4 received 4.3 without issue.

Additionally, the new Android version isn’t playing nice with Netflix on Nexus 4’s, either. After upgrading, launching the Netflix app is causing some handsets to freeze up — and only resetting the phone with a long press of the power button will get the phone working again. Android engineer Dan Morrill has said that Google is aware of the Netflix issue, however, and that its working on a fix. Regardless, Nexus 4 owners might want to think twice before upgrading. We’ve reached out to Google for an official comment on these problems, and will update this post should we receive one.

Google Play Store Has More App Downloads Than Apple App Store

Google Play Store Has More App Downloads Than Apple App StoreYou know how is it like in the world of professional boxing, where there is always the customary “tale of the tape” before each fight? I guess you can say that the folks over at App Annie had a similar idea when they pitched two behemoths against each other – the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, and here we are with the results of this “showdown” of sorts. History is bound to repeat itself in certain situations, although this is a slight deviation from the past – while Google Play has seemingly more downloads than Apple’s App Store, the latter is earning way more than the former, although there have been exceptions to the rule in the past.

I suppose Google’s efforts in the past has led them to where they are today, including introducing a new developer policy that cleans up the Play Store of malicious apps, while pulling out more than 60,000 low quality apps from the Play Store earlier this year. It is interesting to note that Google Play Store actually dished out app downloads in the past quarter compared to the Apple App Store, but somehow the apps over at the App Store pull in approximately 2.3x more revenue than its competitor.

TV shows come to Google Play UK

TV shows come to Google Play UK

The British have had access to Google Play Movies for months, but they’ve been denied TV shows — an unusual omission given the country’s rich broadcasting history. All is now right with the world, however, as Google now offers TV episodes through the UK’s Google Play Store. The early catalog focuses on shows from big local networks, such as the BBC and Channel 5, as well as imports from the colonials (read: Americans). Brits keen on streaming Sherlock just have to visit Google Play to start watching.

Motorola Connect and Migrate tools arrive ahead of Moto X event

Motorola Connect for Moto X hits Chrome Web Store early, lets you check calls and texts from the web

We thought we knew virtually everything there was to know about the Moto X ahead of its launch later today, but Motorola apparently has a few surprises left — or rather, had. The company has quietly posted two tools that are clearly targeted at users of its upcoming flagship. Motorola Connect, a Chrome extension, lets those with a Moto X or a new Droid phone handle their incoming calls and text messages through web notifications. Motorola Migrate, in turn, is built to ease the pain of moving to a new Motorola phone — the Android app lets users transfer media, text messages and other content that Google doesn’t necessarily store in the cloud. We’ll no doubt hear more about Connect and Migrate at the Moto X unveiling, but those who want to get a first-hand look can download both utilities at the source links.

German publishers opt to remain in Google News, still expect to get paid

AP: German publishers opt for continued inclusion in Google News

Google said last month it would require German publishers to opt-in if they wanted to continue to be featured on Google News. The AP is now reporting that several have decided to remain on the service, including Spiegel Online, Zeit Online and Springer AG. Publishers have long been pushing for the government to change the law so news aggregators would have to pay for the content they scrape. A new copyright law does come into effect today limiting how much info aggregators are allowed to borrow for their feeds, and to avoid any legal scuffles, Google decided an opt-in policy was safest. This may not be the end of the company’s troubles with publishers in the country, however, as Springer AG has said “it still expects to receive money from Google eventually.”
