Google Making Big Bucks on iPhone Users

This article was written on February 15, 2008 by CyberNet.

iPhone Google CyberNet It’s no mistake, iPhone users actually use the Internet on their phone and they’re using Google to perform searches. Google originally thought they made a mistake with their data when they saw how often they were getting search requests from iPhone users. As it turns out, it was no mistake and Google really is receiving 50 times more search requests from iPhones than any other mobile handset. Vic Gundotra who is the head of Google’s mobile operations was quoted as saying, “We thought it was a mistake and made our engineers check the logs again.”

So what is it about the iPhone that users actually make use of the Internet versus other mobile handsets? One of the biggest reasons has got to be the ease of use of the iPhone. It’s effortless to search the web – Safari on the iPhone is convenient to use versus browsers on other mobile devices that aren’t quite as convenient.  Another big thing is simply the fact that Google is the primary search engine that is available to iPhone users. If the primary search was changed to Yahoo, I imagine Google would see a pretty decent decrease in the number of search requests coming from iPhone users.

So what does this increase in searches from iPhone users mean for Google? Duh. More money! And once Android-based mobile handsets hit the shelves sometime later this year, I imagine they’ll see another big bump in searches and of course money.  There’s no doubt, Google is in a pretty darn good place right now in the mobile industry.

What It Truly Means To Have Googly Eyes

What It Truly Means To Have Googly Eyes

The people over at Wired have found a truly amazing image that gives you a close look at what we might see (literally) in the future. The Google Contact pictured above appears to have some sort of wireless mechanism to retrieve information like the weather. While such a tiny device seems impossible right now it may not be as far away as you think.

Nano technologies are creeping up very fast and this could be something that is developed in the next 10 to 20 years. It is scary to think about because if the contact lens gets a virus will you receive pinkeye? If it crashes will you be blinded with a blue screen of death? This could start a whole new breed of hackers!

GMail Might Show Froogle Results Near Advertisements

GMail Might Show Froogle Results Near Advertisements

Google may soon be placing Froogle product recommendations in GMail whenever Google finds a product name in the content of the email. This is very interesting as Garett Rogers points out because this new service could anger some online retail sites. When companies send out emails showing their “hot” deals GMail will show recommendations for other people selling the same products, and possibly with lower prices. Companies may have to research Froogle before they start sending out their emails to ensure that their deal is the lowest.

Google Web Fonts Provides a Variety of Fonts for Your Site

This article was written on August 04, 2011 by CyberNet.

Custom online font

Finding fonts to use on your website can be a pain, but a lot of people don’t realize that Google has an interface for finding and using fonts on any site. Google Web Fonts lets you see samples of over 200 fonts in either a single word, sentence, or paragraph format. The amount of sample text it shows varies based upon which of those formats you choose.

After you’ve found a font that you like just click the “Quick-use” link to see an estimation of how this could affect your page load time, and then also the code you need to add to your site to use the font. The nice thing is that Google will host all of the scripts and CSS so that you don’t have to worry about forking over the extra bandwidth yourself.

The site also has a “Collection” system that will essentially let you bookmark a bunch of fonts to make reviewing them a little easier later on. The whole system is pretty awesome, and I applaud Google for putting all of this together for web developers to use.

Add Non-Gmail Email Address to your Google Account

This article was written on January 21, 2008 by CyberNet.

Just recently, Google added a new feature so that you can associate non-Gmail addresses to your Google account. What I mean by this is that you can inform Google that you have other email accounts – maybe a Windows Live or Yahoo account. At this point, there are only two main advantages for doing this.  One advantage is that you can now log into your Google account with one of the added email addresses. The second advantage is that now if someone were to invite you to an event on Google Calendar using one of your other non-Gmail addresses,  Google will know that it’s you and the invitation will be displayed.

So how do you go about doing this? Go to www.google.com and sign in.  Then click on the edit link next to your personal information.  There’s a box (shown below) where you can enter in additional email addresses.

add email address

Once you enter an address, you’ll notice that it’ll say “pending verification.” Google will send you an email to the email address that you entered where you’ll have to verify that it is in fact your account. The email I received when I entered in a Hotmail address is shown below.

 email address verification1

Keep in mind that if you decide to sign in to Google with one of the associated email addresses, you’ll enter the complete address (e.g., yourname@hotmail.com) and then you’ll enter your Gmail password (not the password for the associated account). If by chance you associate an email address with your Google account and you later decide that you no longer want it to be, you can easily remove it. Hopefully in the future, Google will add more benefits to using this feature other than the Calendar and the fact you can sign in to your Google account with another non-Google email address.
