Gorilla Glass NBT Protects Touchscreen Laptops

Gorilla Glass NBT Protects Touchscreen Laptops

Excessive use can lead to a laptop display being scratched. High-end touchscreen laptops these days often feature Corning’s Gorilla Glass, which gained popularity back in 2007 when it was specifically designed for the first iPhone. Gorilla Glass is tough and protects a smartphone or tablet’s display when it is dropped. If you drop a high-end laptop, chances are you might end up damaging much more than the display itself. So in that particular case, the focus is towards safeguarding the display against scratches, not potentially damaging falls. That is why Corning has created Gorilla Glass NBT, a new solution that protects touchscreen laptop displays against scratches.

Gorilla Glass NBT ensures that the display is able to withstand any weakness that may result from a scratch. Corning says that complaint rate for scratches on touchscreen laptops is higher than other devices, so there’s an obvious need for this product. This new solution is expensive, but Corning says that Gorilla Glass NBT provides 8 to 10 times more damage resistance for just 1 or 2 percent of the device’s retail price. Dell is one of the first vendors to integrate the new Gorilla Glass NBT solution in their upcoming touchscreen laptops due this fall.

Corning Gorilla Glass NBT arrives for touchscreen laptops

We’ve mostly seen Corning’s toughened Gorilla Glass used on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets to prevent scratching and the like. While a few laptops have Gorilla Glass installed, Corning is wanting to break into that market even further, and have introduced Gorilla Glass NBT specifically made for touchscreen laptops.

Corning boasts that their Gorilla Glass NBT provides “enhanced scratch resistance, reduced scratch visibility, and better retained strength once a scratch occurs to help protect notebook displays from breakage.” Essentially, it’s no different than what we’ve seen out of past iterations of Gorilla Glass, aside from the new focus on laptops.

Corning also says that Gorilla Glass NBT will deliver “eight to 10 times more” scratch resistance than traditional soda-lime glass. Most laptops still use traditional glass displays, which can shatter pretty easily if the laptop is dropped, and are also prone to scratches and annoying fingerprints, but Gorilla Glass NBT seems to be Corning’s answer to these problems.

The company didn’t mention how much the new glass would cost, only saying that it would be “1 to 2 percent of a notebook’s retail price,” but we can’t imagine laptop prices going up simply because of a change in the glass that manufacturers use.

Dell will the be first manufacturer to starting using Gorilla Glass NBT, with new laptops releasing sometime in the fall before the holiday shopping season arrives. Both Dell and HP have back Corning in the past and have used Gorilla Glass on their laptops. That should continue in the future with this new NBT formula.

Gorilla Glass maker details anti-reflective and antimicrobial phone displays

Touch screens are quite a marvel, but they still come with a few downsides. The glass used can be highly reflective, making it hard to see the display in open daylight, and since we touch our phones constantly, they’re susceptible to getting all sorts of germs on them. However, Gorilla Glass make Corning says they’re developing a new glass to counter these annoyances.

During the MIT Mobile Technology Summit, senior vice president and operations chief of staff for Corning Dr. Jeffrey Evenson discussed some of the advantages of Gorilla Glass, as well as some future technologies that will be implemented into the glass in the future, including anti-reflective and antimicrobial tech.

During the presentation, Evenson showed a slide that reveals a piece of glass with what appears to be round hole in the middle. However, Evenson went on to note that it’s actually not a hole but rather a section of the glass panel that has been treated with the new anti-reflection technology from Corning. Obviously, you can tell a huge difference.

As for the company’s antimicrobial tech, Corning says that it’ll be able to kill germs and viruses that can stick to your phone’s screen (which can eventually spread to other people or even yourself). Studies showed that after half an hour, a significant amount of germs were eliminated from the screen, while most or all of the germs were completely gone after around two hours. It’s certainly not an instant process, but it’s much better than having the germs lie dormant for days.

Corning said they don’t have an exact timeline of when to expect this new glass to roll out onto smartphones and tablets, but Evenson mentioned a vague “in the next two years,” so it seems we’ll be waiting for a little while. In the meantime, take comfort in knowing that your smartphone screen is filled with all sorts of nasty stuff that may or may not kill you.
