The architectural marvels set to be unveiled at Expo Milan 2015 have already wowed our socks off
A number of publications being distributed across the UK this week are carrying an Apple-made advertisement coinciding with Earth Day. As Apple’s ongoing court case with Samsung rolls on in … Continue reading
Apple and Samsung are currently embroiled in a legal battle with one another, with each side claiming patent infringement. This war between Apple and Samsung has been going on for quite a while now and it looks like things aren’t about to end anytime soon. That being said, it looks like Apple might have had enough of Samsung making fun of them and have recently released an ad that seems to poke fun at the South Korea tech giant.
As you can see in the ad above, the slogan reads, “There are some ideas we want every company to copy.” This is obviously a poke at Samsung whom Apple is accusing of copying their product designs and patents. The ad in question is with regards to Apple’s recent efforts at making their data centers greener. The company was recently praised by the folks at Greenpeace for having a green data center and we guess Apple is making efforts to keep it up.
In case the words are a bit too small to be read, the ad reads, “There’s one area where we actually encourage others to imitate us. Because when everyone makes the environment a priority, we all benefits. We’d be more than happy to see every data centre fuelled by 100% renewable energy sources. And we eagerly await the day when every product is made without the harmful toxins we have removed from ours.”
“Of course we know we can continue to do better. We’ve set some pretty ambitious goals for reducing our impact on climate change, making our products with greener materials and conserving our planet’s limited resources. So the next time we come across a great idea that can help leave the world better than we found it, we look forward to sharing.”
Apple has also recently announced that they will be accepting functioning and non-functioning older Apple products in their bid to recycle them to prevent the toxins from seeping into the earth and water.

We know that Apple has always been a very environmentally-conscious company. Greenpeace has given Apple their approval regarding how green their data centers are, but it seems Apple is not stopping there. They have recently taken steps to ensure their data centers will be even more green than ever, and have recently announced a new program that will allow Apple customers to send back old products to any Apple Store for recycling.
The stores will accept both functioning and non-functioning products. For products that are no longer working, the customer will not be receiving anything for it, but for those who are sending in old but still usable products, they will be given a gift card which presumably can be used towards newer purchases (we’re not sure if the gift cards can be used on iTunes or just the Apple Store).
The goal is to help reduce the amount of toxins from seeping into the soil or groundwater, which is what might happen if old products were just tossed aside on the landfills or left outside in public areas. The program will see assistance from PowerON and in a statement made by Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President of Environmental Initiatives, “What the company wants to do is use all our innovation and all of our expertise to make the planet more secure and make the environment better.”
In the meantime if you’d like to learn more about Apple’s recycling efforts, you can head on over to Apple’s website where you will be able to watch a video narrated by Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook.

A hydroelectric dam is always a good idea when it comes to generating green power, but there are case studies which show that there will also be a largely negative environmental impact if large swathes of the forest is chopped down and cleared to make way for the dam, displacing the indigenous peoples along the way. Well, one thing is for sure – most of us do live in relatively modern homes these days, where our toilets have a flushing system to get rid of whatever waste deposited. How about using each flush in your toilet to generate electricity? This is what what a South Korean research team has decided to do.
Youn Sang Kim is the one leading this team of researchers, where they have come up with a new kind of toilet. Once it is installed, you will be able to flush without feeling too guilty, as electricity is being generated with each lever pump. Of course, you would also need to flush just and when you need to, and not with wanton abandon since water is growing to be an extremely scarce resource in the world, so much so that future wars might even be fought over water – and not oil. The system is said to be so efficient, even the kinetic energy of a single drop of water that strikes its transducer is capable of powering an LED bulb for a short moment.

It seems that Apple has edged a whole lot closer to running all of its facilities on renewable energy – at 100%, no less. This would definitely be quite the triumphant achievement regardless of which industry you’re in, where right now, its corporate campuses and data centers happen to be at the 94% mark – and counting towards the magical 100% number. As for their next step, Apple hopes to see such eco-friendly efforts extend to include its numerous retail stores that dot major cities around the globe.
Of course, such ambition is also dependent on one’s perspective, as Apple has not taken into consideration the manufacturing, transport, and use of its actual products, which so far, makes up 98% of its carbon footprint. Still, this is not an accomplishment to be scoffed at where its facilities are concerned, since data centers have been well known to be major culprits when it comes to energy consumption.
Greenpeace has already given praise to Apple earlier this month for the green-ness of their data centers. Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president for environmental initiatives, shared, “No one can ever claim again you can’t have a data center that runs on 100 percent renewable. Once those proof points are out there, it makes it easier for policies to follow.”

Bentley Hybrid Car Set To Wow
Posted in: Today's ChiliIt goes without saying that there is a fast growing group of nouveau riche over in China, and luxury car maker Bentley is not going to let this opportunity pass them by. No sir, they have underlined the importance of the Chinese market by using the Beijing motor show as its vehicle (pardon the pun) to unveil its very first attempt at a hybrid concept car, not to mention using this opportunity to debut another three more models.
This hybrid ride will be based on Bentley’s £225,000 flagship Mulsanne model, where the hybrid system makes use of both petrol and electric power, allowing you to plug into its mains in order to juice up your ride whenever it starts to run low on juice. The manufacturer touts that the system will be able to increase the car’s power output by 25%, while cutting emissions by 70%, in addition to letting you get around on this vehicle for 30 miles before its batteries run well and truly flat.
Ricky Tay, Bentley’s China managing director, shared, “China has always been a key market for Bentley and, after a remarkable year in 2013, we have seen an impressive start to 2014 with a 19pc increase in sales in the first quarter. Our customer base is growing and we are expanding our dealer network to offer our ultra luxury products and a unique brand experience throughout the region.”

The military is definitely one place where you can work and “play” with the latest “toys” that are in the market – or maybe not even released yet. Most of the time, such tools will be used to make your military unit as efficient as possible, whether it is meant for offense or defense. Logos Technologies recently picked up a DARPA award in order to work on a silent-capable hybrid electric military motorcycle.

As we move more and more towards a paradigm shift in thinking, having a concern for the environment so that the next generation will have a place to live on earth, new advancements have been made to be more power efficient while lowering wastage. Take the Solar Impulse 2 for example – this solar-powered plane intends to circumnavigate the globe on solar power alone! It looks like Jersey’s street lighting bill is going to get cut in half thanks to revitalized lamps that see action in St Helier’s Liberation Square. These lamps have been fitted with light-emitting diodes, or LEDs in short, that will consume just 33% of the energy of conventional bulbs, and apart from saving the local authorities money in terms of its electricity bill, it could also help improve road safety thanks to its brightness level.
According to Jersey transport officials, such technology will be rolled out across all main island roads as long as budgets permit. As for the lights at Liberation Square, these will be dimmed between midnight and 6am. Bob Baudains, a street works manager at Transport and Technical Services, did share that such LEDs are capable of lasting up to a 100,000 hours “without significant maintenance”, hence making our streets safer and more appealing to walk/travel along.
