Ever since Target announced that it has been the victim of a massive security breach, there have been many reports indicating that its possible for other major U.S. retailers to have been attacked as well. Luxury retailer Neiman Marcus did find that it too had been the victim of a similar breach, which some security researchers have claimed that at least five other retailers have also been breached. Sears is now “actively reviewing” its systems to determine if it has been the victim of a breach, the retailer’s name hasn’t come up in previous related reports.

One can never be too sure about data security in this day and age, security breaches often happen and can result in loss of crucial data. Take the recent Target hack for example, it resulted in personal information as well as credit and debit card numbers of more than 70 million people being compromised. While its no where near that colossal, a security hole may have lead to the personal information of 146,000 Indiana University students being exposed.

Edward Snowden’s bag of treats, rather repository of damning classified documents, brings another electronic spying scandal to light. Britain’s GCHQ, Her Majesty’s equivalent of the U.S. National Security Agency, has reportedly been involved in collecting still images of Yahoo webcam chats “in bulk,” reports The Guardian which has received said documents from Snowden. The program was called Optic Nerve was ran through 2008-2010. Images collected were saved to the agency’s databases, they were collected regardless of the possibility that users were possible intelligence targets or not. Oh, and the NSA helped them.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Verizon Communications is investigating similar security breaches at two more as-yet-unnamed retailers that occurred around the same time as the massive Target credit card hack
The U.S. government has had to make some painful explanations following blowback generated by the highly classified documents leaked by Edward Snowden.
