Half-Life 2 Headcrab Hat: Hair & Mind Control

ThinkGeek is now selling an officially licensed plush Headcrab Hat. It sits on top of your head and doesn’t cover your face. Because that would just be silly.

Gabe Newell Explains Why Valve Doesn’t Churn Out Half-Life Sequels

Gabe Newell Explains Why Valve Doesnt Churn Out Half Life SequelsWhen will we be able to expect Half-Life 3? 2014? 2015? Well whatever it is, Valve seems to be denying the existence of the game at the moment, despite the mountain of rumors which we have been hearing about recently. After all Half-Life has to be one of the more iconic franchises in the video game industry and it would make sense for Valve to capitalize on that, wouldn’t it? After all given the success of the Half-Life franchise, it would be almost easy money for the company to create sequel after sequel of the game, but as it turns out as easy and tempting as it would be, it is not in Valve’s culture to do so.

Speaking in an interview with The Washington Post, Valve’s Gabe Newell revealed why the company does not take the easy route out and just produce sequel after sequel. “When we started out we were a single-player video game company that could have been really successful just doing Half-Life sequel after Half-Life sequel, but we collectively said let’s try to make multiplayer games even though there’s never been a commercial successful multiplayer game.” Of course there is nothing wrong with churning out sequel after sequel. In fact companies such as Ubisoft have no qualms about releasing Assassin’s Creed titles on a yearly basis because that’s how confident they are of the franchise.

What do you guys think? Do you think that constant releases will devalue a franchise, or are you, like most gamers, starting to get impatient that Valve has yet to make any Half-Life 3 announcements?

3D Printed Jumbo LEGO Minifigs: Children of the Corn Starch

LEGO opened Cuusoo to let fans pitch ideas for play sets. But if you have a 3D printer, you don’t have to wait and beg for a minifig of your favorite character. Just do what Michael “Skimbal” Curry did and make the minifigs yourself. Skimbal even made his minifigs four times larger than the official LEGO citizens.

Skimbal started with a blank jumbo minifig and went wild from there. Although he hasn’t shared new models for about a month now, he already has several popular characters ready for you to download.

See that headcrab zombie minifig? Half-life 3 is a better bet than an official LEGO version of that. Or maybe not. I may be underestimating Valve Time. Print a browser then head to Thingiverse to download Skimbal’s minifig 3D models.

Half-Life 3 NES Cartridge Art: The Grinch’s Gift to Gamers

72Pins and artist Gabriel Leoni teamed up to give you a way to troll a Half-Life fan this Christmas. This NES cartridge has a game inside it, and it says “Half-Life 3″ on its cover. But it obviously doesn’t have the actual game, or even a NES demake of it. It’s kinda hard to demake something that hasn’t been made yet.

Was the Half-Life 3 European Trademark Filing a Hoax?

Half-Life is the game that put Valve on the map. The last full game in the franchise was Half-Life 2 way back in October 2007. Ever since that launch, fans have been clamoring for the next installment in the franchise – presumably called Half-Life 3. Recently, a trademark filing surfaced at a European trademark registration site leading to jubilation among fans.

    image3 620x668magnify

That filing put fans of the franchise in a tizzy thinking a new game was in the works. It turns out that the trademark filing was likely a hoax according to reports floating around the web. The original filing looked legitimate, but it is now nowhere to be found.

There are a couple theories circulating explaining what has happened with one being that Valve is trying to hide the trademark approval now that it’s been given. That does make a lot of sense considering that Valve US has reportedly held the trademark on Half-Life 3 for a while. Another equally plausible theory is that the original filing was simply a hoax. If that’s the case, I like to believe there’s a special place in hell for whoever tricked us.

Regardless of the state of the trademark, there’s a reasonable chance that Valve is working on the game for next-gen consoles – but they’ll only tell us when they’re good and ready,

Half-Life 3 trademark filed for by Valve

If they didn’t have the lock on the name before today, Valve certainly does now: Half-Life 3 has been entered in to trademark application with the European Union’s Office of Harmonization for the Internal Market, for real. For those of you unfamiliar with the title, Half-Life 3 is a game that’s been long-awaited, having seen […]

Half-Life 3 is not in production, says Valve voice actor

Fans of the Half-Life franchise have lived in a state of anguish for quite awhile now, ever-hoping for a game that seems to have become nothing more than mythos. Though some keep dropping teasing suggestions that Half-Life 3 has been confirmed, one faithful Valve voice actor has come forward to dash hopes and set the […]

Half-Life modders gain Valve’s approval, will launch new ‘Sven Co-op’ on Steam

Half Life modders gain Valves approval, will launch new mod on Steam

Having developed Sven Co-op for the better part of two decades, the team behind the Half-Life mod has finally been given the keys to Valve Corporation’s candy store. The company has granted the modding group access to the original game’s engine in order to produce a custom edition that’s designed to support co-operative play. In return, the next Sven Co-op, in which players have to work together to survive and solve puzzles in various time periods, will be made available through Steam as a free-to-play title. All we ask is that Daniel “Sven” Fearon uses his new-found access to hunt around for any files entitled Episode Three, and keep all of our flickering hopes alive.

Half-Life 2 Oculus Rift support official

In the latest update to Valve‘s classic sci-fi first-person shooter Half-Life 2, the developer added official support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, making it the second game from Valve to support the new VR device, with Team Fortress 2 being the first game that received the green light.

    Half-Life_gordon_alyx

Valve programmer and lead developer of the Oculus Rift-ified Team Fortress 2 Joe Ludwig announced support for Half-Life 2 on the Oculus Developer Forums. The beta for the VR version of the game is out now, and Ludwig says that the port should be shipping to everyone “in a few weeks,” allowing Oculus Rift owners to take advantage of the Valve game.

However, Ludwig notes that this particular port is “a bit more raw” than the Team Fortress 2 port when it first was released for the Oculus Rift, so gamers will definitely experience some bugs in the game, and Valve is already aware of a few themselves, including problems with HUD and and the zoomed-in UI.

As for other Valve titles that will make their way through the Oculus Rift development process, Valve says that more of their games will be heading to the VR headset, including the Portal and Left 4 Dead series, which have already gone through some testing phases. However, no more details were given about upcoming games.

Half-Life Gets the Stained Glass Treatment

Fans of the Half-Life series will immediately recognize the Lambda logo in this image. But this isn’t just some patch on Gordon Freeman’s uniform, no. This is a handmade work of art – a geeky stained glass masterpiece if you ask me.

    half life stained glass

It was made by Evan Daniels of Martian Glasswork – the same man behind the Iron Man and Master Chief stained glass works featured here before. This window measures 25″ x 25″ and was cut from 34 individual pieces of glass. Each of the textures in the center of the symbol is unique, which really makes an already special piece just that much more special.

This one-of-a-kind piece is available over on Etsy for $500(USD). I’m surprised the guys at Valve haven’t snatched it up to put it alongside their life-size TF2 gun and their Portal turret replica.
