Microsoft has just started to accept universal applications for its combined Windows and Windows Phone Store, and what better way to introduce universal apps than in the form of a game – Halo: Spartan Assault? The one time purchase of this game will be able to be used on either platform, where it has been listed as a universal app in both the Windows Store and Windows Phone Store.
In a nutshell, anyone who actually picks up the game via either store will be able to obtain a license to play the game on both Windows and Windows Phone platforms. Halo: Spartan Assault costs $4.99 a pop, thanks to a recent price cut for the app.
There is also a new disclaimer on the Windows Phone Store that takes note on how the universal nature of the app, touting that this particular title was developed “for Windows Phones and Windows PCs.” Apart from that, there is also another icon in the store’s listing that shows off the game’s dual-platform status. The game itself has not changed, of course, and it remains to be seen whether Microsoft will take the step to extend its universal app store to the Xbox One or Xbox 360. Are you going to give Halo: Spartan Assault a go anytime soon? You can pick up Halo: Spartan Assault for Windows Phone 8 at 691 MB and for Windows 8 and RT at 843 MB here and here, respectively.

The first 24 hours of Halo 3′s release was HUGE for Microsoft as Xbox 360 users forked out a total of $170 million for the game. Remember, that was only the first 24 hours! That $170 million was enough to make the launch of Halo 3 the biggest in entertainment history – bigger than any Hollywood movie. As you can imagine, game retailers are ecstatic with the demand and sales of the game, and Microsoft is celebrating over their success.
In the press release from Microsoft, they point out that “The Xbox 360 title beat previous records set by blockbuster theatrical releases like Spiderman 3 and novels such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” Certainly the difference in price between a movie ticket or novel, and the minimum $60 price tag on Halo 3 helps, but even still, it’s a titanic-sized accomplishment for the gaming industry. Sales were also aided by over 10,000 midnight madness parties that were held Monday night by retailers to start selling the game, as well as over 1.7 million pre-orders.
I’d be really interested to know how many copies of the game were sold, and what percentage that is of all Xbox 360 owners, but Microsoft hasn’t given those details yet. Obviously, all that really matters in the entertainment industry is the dollar amount, but it would still be interesting to know.
Vice president of movies and games at Best Buy said, “The initial demand we’ve seen for Halo 3 has been astounding, and the game is on track to become the number one gaming title of all time. Halo 3 is a genuine entertainment phenomenon and our customers have responded very enthusiastically to the release.” Years ago, I don’t think anyone would have even considered that Microsoft could develop a gaming console, let alone publish the number one gaming title of all time.

If there is one title that gamers are looking forward to this year, it might be the next Halo title from Microsoft. Earlier this year, Microsoft actually reassured gamers that Halo 5 would be on track for a release in 2014, but a later rumor suggested that the game might be pushed to 2015 instead.
Naturally this is not good news for fans of the franchise who might be looking forward to playing the latest title on their brand new Xbox One consoles. However they are only rumors so try not to read into them so much for now. The good news is that as far as Halo-related information is concerned, you can certainly expect to hear some at E3 2014 which will be taking place in the middle of the year. (more…)

Halo 3 is done! The developers of the game, Bungie, announced yesterday that “Halo’s Gone Gold.” That means that the final version of Halo 3 is done, and now it’s being “whisked away to top-secret manufacturing locations to be turned into retail version of the game – and eventually packaged and sent to stores in various cases, tins and cat-helmets. We can’t wait to share it with you guys on September 25th and 26th.”
They go on to thank all the people involved in creating what is expected to be one of the most successful video games, ever. They closed up the announcement with “We finished our fight. Your fight begins in 27 days. Are you ready?” And with that question, I know that many of you are more than ready. With over 1 million pre-orders, Halo 3 has already broken preorder records in the video game industry! People are expecting a lot from Halo 3, and I doubt it’ll Disappoint.
In other Halo 3 news, apparently South Koreans aren’t really familiar with Halo. So in an effort to familiarize Koreans with the game, Microsoft decided to do some promoting. According to Kotaku, “Microsoft Korea thought it would be HILARIOUS to have a guy in a Master Chief costume to spook innocent bystanders and film it Candid Camera-style and use cheesy circus music.”
Just watch…

According to Halo franchise voice actor Steve Downes, it seems that 2014 will mark the release of Halo 2 Anniversary. Downes’ claim to fame would be the voice of the beloved Master Chief, where he mentioned that there will be an anniversary edition of the second Halo title, aptly known as Halo 2 Anniversary (which was rumored earlier this year), is going to roll out later in 2014. Downes mentioned, “I think you may be ahead of yourself on Halo 5. I wouldn’t expect anything until 2015. What you can look forward to this year is an anniversary edition of Halo 2.” It surely cannot get any more clearer as to whether Halo 2 Anniversary exists, can it?
