NVIDIA Tegra 4 Chimera camera technology hands-on

This past week we’ve had the opportunity to have a peek at one of the many new features involved in the NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor technology family: Chimera computational photography. The NVIDIA Tegra 4 (and Tegra 4i) SoC works with what they’re calling the “world’s first mobile computational photography architecture”, and today what you’ll be seeing is one of the several features NVIDIA will be delivering to smartphones that utilize their processor. This first demonstration involves “Always-on HDR” photography.

What you’re seeing here is a demonstration done by NVIDIA at the official GTC 2013 conference. That the GPU Technology Conference, a multi-day event we attended with bells on – have a peek at our GTC 2013 tag portal now for everything we got to see – with more coming up in the future! The demonstration shown here is of a technology originally revealed earlier this year at NVIDIA’s keynote presentation at CES 2013 – head back to the original reveal post to see a whole different angle!

Here a high dynamic range scene has been arranged behind a device running the Chimera photography experience with an NVIDIA Tegra 4 (or perhaps 4i) processor inside. While a traditional HDR-capable camera takes two images one-after-another at different exposures and fuses them together, NVIDIA’s Always-on HDR feature works to take away the two negative bits involved with traditional HDR by allowing the following:

• Live preview through your camera’s display (on your smartphone, tablet, etc).
• The ability to capture moving objects.

With traditional HDR, if you’ve got someone running through the scene, you’ll get even more of a blur than you’d normally get because you’re effectively taking two photos. With NVIDIA’s method you’re capturing your image 10 times faster than you’d be capturing it without a Tegra 4 working to help. Because of this, when you’ve got a Tegra 4 processor in your smartphone, you’ll be able to use a flash in your HDR photos, use burst mode to capture several HDR shots in quick succession, and you’ll be able to capture HDR video, too!

The Ford Fusion Energi joins the C-MAX Energi and Focus Electric as the company’s third vehicle with a charging connector and access to California’s HOV lanes. While it’s a larger car than the C-MAX Energi, it weighs about the same and features pretty much the same plug-in hybrid powertrain with 195 net horsepower and three EV driving modes. It combines a 2-liter DOHC 16V Duratec (Atkinson cycle) engine and CVT with an AC synchronous motor powered by a 7.6kWh Lithium Ion battery. This pack takes about 2.5 hours to fill up with a 240V charging station and provides a range of 21 miles (100MPGe) at up to 85MPH in all-electric mode. Both autos share the same unfortunate battery protrusion in the trunk area, and while it’s less of an issue in the Fusion sedan than the wagon-like C-MAX, it detracts from the overall package. The Fusion Energi also packs the company’s latest and greatest tech, including MyFord Mobile, SmartGauge with EcoGuide, Eco Cruise and SYNC with MyFord Touch. JVC showed off a prototype 8K Super Hi-Vision projector in 2008 at CEATEC, and now it’s ready to ship a real product later this month, dubbed the DLA-VS4800. JVC’s e-Shift pixel technology is at play here, which we first saw in consumer products with the ‘4K’ projectors it shipped in 2011, and updated in last year’s models. Basically the D-ILA display panel inside the device is half the resolution (in this one, 4,096 x 2,400) but projects two images alternated at 120Hz, one shifted slightly diagonally. This creates the impression of a higher res display, without actually upping the pixel count.

Based on our demos of the tech at CEDIA for the last two years, the effect is very convincing, however with AV Watch’s presumed price tag of 25 million yen ($261k US — and that’s without the 4 available lenses, which have no price), we might want a few more real pixels, if such a product were available for purchase. Still, if you want the first 8K display device on the block, this is your only choice, unless you can convince Sharp to part with one of its sweet 8K Super Hi-Vision LCD prototypes (we’ve asked, we’ve begged, we’ve planned Ocean’s 11-style heists — it’s not possible.) The other issue is that you’ll still need some content to view, and with the roadmap currently putting test broadcasts in 2016, leaving this one to the museums and planetariums it’s intended for may be the best course of action.

How do you justify splurging for a pricey point-and-shoot when your smartphone takes “good enough” pictures on its own? A 20x lens, for starters. Canon’s new PowerShot SX280 HS is small enough to tuck away in a pocket, yet it packs a 25-500mm f/3.5-6.8 lens. That’s old news for SX260 owners, though — last year’s model offered an identical range. There’s plenty of new features, however, including a 12.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, built-in WiFi, a DIGIC 6 processor, 1080/30p and 60p video capture, a sensitivity range of ISO 80-6400 with significantly improved image quality in low light, a 14 fps Burst HQ mode and a 260-shot battery rating in Eco Mode (compared to 210 shots under normal conditions). Those features are joined by a 3-inch 461k-dot LCD and GPS, both of which shipped on the SX260.

During our hands-on, we quickly noticed the SX280 HS’ significant speed boost — it’s 50 percent faster than its predecessor when it comes to focusing and shutter lag, and it definitely shows. The Burst HQ mode was also quite impressive, though you’re unfortunately limited to just seven consecutive shots. The camera has a solid feel, though it’s not terribly heavy. A very slim pop-up flash on the top, compact dedicated mode dial on the rear and a slightly extended front grip help to distinguish this model from lesser-equipped point-and-shoots, though both the red and black matte finishes convey a premium look on their own. If you haven’t already come to grips with the fact that Canon won’t be releasing a mirrorless camera with DSLR-like performance, you might as well cut your losses now. Instead of replacing the sluggish EOS M with a compelling shooter, the company has decided to focus on shrinking its DSLR. The result, the EOS Rebel SL1, is the world’s smallest Digital SLR. SL stands for “super lightweight,” which seems appropriate, given that it tips the scale at just over 14 ounces, yet the camera still accommodates EOS lenses, such as the new EF-S 18-55mm IS STM optic that ships in the box. There’s an 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, DIGIC 5 image processor, a 1.04M-dot fixed touchscreen, a new hybrid autofocus and standard 9-point AF. It offers sensitivity ranging from ISO 100-25,600, can capture 1080p video at 30 or 24 fps, and it includes a built-in mono mic, along with a stereo mic input jack on the side. Samsung, Flo Rida introduce massive Giga Sound MX-FS9000 speakers (update: hands-on video)

Kate Upton, Eli Manning — this is a seriously star-studded Samsung event here in New York — and the latest celebrity to step up on stage is Flo Rida, who helped unveil the new, super-sized Giga Sound MX-FS9000 speakers. Featuring dual 15-inch subwoofers that deliver 2560W in sound, they’ll go for $1,499 when they debut in May. (There’s also a slightly smaller version, the MX-FS9000, which will hit stores in June for $999.) The big-name guests have sent this room of photographers into a frenzy, so it will take a few minutes for us to push our way through to get hands-on. In the mean time, take a look at the full press release past the break.

Update: We’ve now had a chance to check out the gigantic rig. The speakers are a bit flashy for our taste, given the size and constant LED color cycling, but we can certainly see them being a fit for karaoke bars and the like, thanks to microphone inputs and an option to record your voice to an attached USB storage device. Sadly, the Samsung rep we spoke to was unwilling to demonstrate their full potential at the crowded venue, so we can’t really speak to audio quality. If you’re thinking about making a purchase, we’d suggest checking them out at a retail store before getting these bad boys home — as they’re quite hefty, you probably won’t want to be making any returns. We revisited a few products we had flings with at CES, were introduced to some new panels, and taken through the ins-and-outs of the company’s fresh Cloud TV interface. During my discussions with Lenovo’s team about the research involved in reshaping the ThinkPad line, they clued me in on the beast you see above. That, friends, is cutely referred to as the ThinkPad Terminator edition within Lenovo’s walls, and it’s essentially a prototype T431s that’s stripped of its retail garb. The lid’s paint is torn back in order to expose the edges that enable wireless radio transmissions to be sent and received, while the bottom has been left in its rawest form. Think of this as the space shuttle before its paint job, or Mr. Schwarzenegger before his green room appearance.

The goal here was to showcase the underlying rigidity of the machine, without the retail coat of paint covering up the magic within. Obviously, Lenovo has no immediate plans to actually ship this thing, but I can assure you I’m begging the team to reconsider. Looking to join the cause? Lenovo’s taking the wraps off of its newest ThinkPad here at Engadget Expand, but in fact, the T431s represents more than just a minor spec bump. It’s actually the first ThinkPad borne out of Lenovo’s latest “clean sheet” development initiative — an 18-month process that the company briefed me on here. Regarding the laptop at hand, the 14-incher boasts a slimmer, sexier and more understated design, all while remaining very much a ThinkPad. It’s being classified as an Ultrabook, yet it still meets the Mil-SPEC 8 standard for rigidity and durability. In other words, the weight loss isn’t coming at the expense of ruggedness.

As for specs, it’s rocking a 1,600 x 900 matte display with 250 nits of brightness, integrated Intel HD graphics, a 720p front-facing webcam, 4GB of RAM (with optional upgrades boosting it as high as 12GB), a 47WHr (three-cell) sealed battery, an optionally backlit keyboard, Bluetooth 4.0 and built-in support for both WiFi and WWAN connections. It measures in at 13.03 x 8.89 x 0.8 inches while weighing 3.6 pounds, and it’s easily one of the sturdiest Ultrabooks we’ve had the pleasure of wrapping our paws around.

Lenovo didn’t hold back on the unveils here at Expand, and as if the ThinkPad T431s wasn’t enough, the company just teased a next-generation of the X series ThinkPad line. In essence, what we saw is the future 12-inch, SSD-infused variant of the X230, gussied up in the same kind of motif that’ll be first showcased on the 14-inch T431s. In other words, we’re looking at a slimmer, more streamlined machine that boasts the outfit’s new widened trackpad, remapped Function keys and a thinner bezel. We weren’t given a price or release date, but we’ll be sure to update with more as we get it.
