Acer C720-2848 Chromebook bucks the upward trend

With the Acer C720-2848 the company has decided to cut the line, so to speak, making the device which appears the same as the earlier model cost just a bit less due to changes to its innards. What you’ve got here is a $199.99 model of the C720, this version working with the same Intel […]

Free Laptop with Mobile Internet Contract?

This article was written on April 04, 2008 by CyberNet.

sprint laptop mockup It wasn’t that long ago that it was next to impossible to pickup a new laptop for under $1000, but now you can regularly find them for just a few hundred dollars. And there’s no arguing that people are becoming more and more connected thanks to the Internet access proved by cellphone networks. When you combine the falling prices of laptops with the increased connectivity what do you get?

Well, there is some thoughts that this could lead to wireless carriers offering free laptops when you sign a mobile Internet contract with them. It would work much the same way as buying a cellphone, where you get the device for free if you agree to stay with the carrier for a few years. And breaking the contract would obviously result in an early termination fee.

Will this takeoff? I think it has a good possibility because it would mean that the customers could upgrade every 18 to 24 months just like with cellphones. There would, of course, be the higher-end laptops that you could pay for, but you would still receive a significant rebate off of the original price.

The wireless carriers wouldn’t really suffer from doing this because it’s likely that they’ll use the same tactics that are used when selling cellphones. By that I mean they’ll increase the monthly plan price to compensate for the cost of the computer. It’s really no sweat off their backs, and I’m sure plenty of businesses and consumers would love being able to upgrade their laptops regularly without any hassle.

The selection probably wouldn’t be the best, and so this likely wouldn’t appeal to me. What do you think though?

The Moto G has gone on pre-order today for select areas in Europe and the UK today, less than 24 hours after it was introduced to the world by Motorola at a special Brazil-based event. Sao Paulo is indeed one of the other areas where the Moto G, a budget-minded smartphone, is seeing pre-sales, while […]

Nexus G not going to happen – but not for lack of trying

It’s become apparent today that the teams working with Google for the last couple of Nexus devices – the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 – may very well have wanted the device(s) to be called something else entirely. While back before the Nexus 4 was revealed – all the way back in 2012 – when […]

Amazon readies custom Kindle covers for the masses

This week the teams responsible for pushing as many Kindles as possible this holiday season have hit upon a rather lucrative business: custom-made covers. What Amazon intends on doing here is offering up a service that would normally be done by a variety of 3rd-party accessory makers, doing the work themselves to make the whole […]

Microsoft’s $10,000 Digital Home Makeover Contest

This article was written on April 04, 2008 by CyberNet.

media center extender contest If you’ve got a video recording device and two minutes to spare, you could end up with a $10,000 Digital Home Makeover, courtesy of Microsoft. They started a contest  to help celebrate the availability of several new Extenders for Windows Media Center. There are thousands of people out there with all kinds of digital media on multiple devices that don’t interact with one another (many of you can probably relate) who could benefit from such a makeover. Microsoft thinks all digital media should be shared across devices and so one lucky winner will receive a Windows Media Center PC along with Extenders to create a “connected entertainment center.”

How to enter: Create a two-minute video explaining why you need the experts to come to your house and set you up with an entertainment system. What do you do with your media currently, and what do you wish that you could do?

What they’re looking for in a video: Enthusiasm, show your current system, and give a story that will appeal to other digital home entertainment users. Contestants must upload their video to video.msn.com.

When the contest starts/ends: The contest started on March 21st, 2008 and runs until May 2, 2008, so you’ve got plenty of time to come up with something good.

At this point, we say that the Xbox 360 is still one of the best Media Center Extenders out there for the price, even though there is a whole selection of extenders available. One such extender (on the high-end) is the Niveus Media Extender which retails for a whopping $1,499! On the lower end is the Linksys DMA 2200 Media Center Extender which retails for around $300.

Unfortunately this contest is available only to those living in the United States. Oh, and don’t expect Microsoft to come in and remodel your home if you’re the winner. While reading the rules of the contest, I noticed the following statement: This prize does not include remodeling or redecorating the winner’s home to accommodate any new equipment awarded. It’s humorous the kinds of statements companies have to put into the rules of contests to protect themselves from lawsuits, isn’t it?

Samsung Galaxy Core Plus joins downward trend

Today Samsung has introduced a device by the name of Galaxy Core Plus, just the newest in a line of devices from most manufacturers that works with a set of specifications that appear to be a downgrade from their predecessors. While this may seem especially curious given the name (they’ve added a “Plus” to its […]

Only One Set-Top Blu-ray Player Expected This Summer

Only One Set-Top Blu-ray Player Expected This Summer

Samsung will be the only manufacturer to release a set-top Blu-ray player this summer. Pioneer was also supposed to release one in June but they delayed the BDP-HD1 to sometime in the Fall 2006.

The real surprising news is that Pioneer announced that they will no longer manufacture regular DVD players and will only support the Blu-ray format. I think they are jumping the gun a little by doing that. After all, VHS is finally getting phased out after years and years of DVD’s being released.
