Dell Studio Laptops Get Some Mac-Like Qualities

This article was written on June 26, 2008 by CyberNet.

Dell has a launched a new line of laptop computers dubbed Dell Studio that has raised a few eyebrows. The laptops ship with Windows Vista which isn’t surprising, but the thing that made Gizmodo do a double-take was the Mac-like dock that appeared on the desktop. The dock is used as a way to remove some of the icons from the user’s desktop, and can be customized in a variety of ways (color, location, etc…). Plus you can add your own shortcuts to it.

After a little searching around I came across this article from Notebook Review that was just posted today. That’s where I got the screenshot from at the beginning of the article, and as you can see each main icon serves as a folder for your shortcuts. That way you can group your related shortcuts, and therefore steer clear of cluttering up the dock itself.

The Dell Studio line also includes backlit keyboards, which happens to be one of the biggest features that drew me to the MacBook Pro. That way when you’re in a low-light environment, such as a presentation, you’ll still be able to see the keys on your keyboard. I had been wondering for awhile why Apple was one of the only laptop manufacturers to offer this feature, and so I applaud Dell for offering this.

I’m sure there will be a lot of Mac fanatics criticizing Dell for including these features will their Studio laptops, but the dock they designed actually looks pretty good. The dock isn’t very Apple-like if you ask me, but there will be plenty of other people who will disagree. I wonder if they will be rolling these two things out to their other laptops?

Turn Your Laptop Into A Digital Painting

This tutorial will show you how to turn your old clunky laptop into a piece of art. The demonstration use a Mac but it will apply to all laptops.

It will require you to detach your LCD from the rest of the computer and then you will have to reattach it (in a different position). Even if you don’t have an extra laptop to do this with it is still fun to see everything that this guy came up with.

Dell Inches Closer To The 30″ Flat Panel Monitor Release

This article was written on January 05, 2006 by CyberNet.

Dell 30 Inch Monitor

Rumors have been flying forever about Dell releasing a monitor to compete with the 30″ Apple Cinema display, and news about the price is finally starting to roll in. To keep it competitive with Apple, Dell is lowering their price $300 below Apple’s in hopes that more people will flock to their new 2560×1600 native resolution beauty. I am currently a user of the 24″ Dell monitor and it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. The problem with the 30″ is that it will initially cost $2,199 but don’t worry, Dell is famous for their coupon saving so I am sure it is possible to shave at least a few hundred more off of that price. I guess you get what you pay for, and you would be getting a lot of screen space for your buck! There is more information and screenshots if you follow the link below.

New Poll: Tell Us About Your Monitor(s)

This article was written on November 17, 2008 by CyberNet.

If you find yourself sitting in front of the computer for hours on end during a days time, a nice LCD monitor can really make a difference. Compared to conventional CRT monitors, flat screens are sharper, and thus a little easier on the eyes. Over the last several years, the prices have come down as well which means it doesn’t take long to save up for one.

A few weeks ago at work I was asked to order several LCD monitors to replace old CRT monitors. It was when I went to remove the old monitors that I was reminded of yet another benefit of the LCD monitors — size! CRT’s are simply heavy, and take up valuable space on a desk. I had several people tell me how nice it was to have so much more desk space available to them.

Because LCD’s take up less space, more people and businesses are inclined to set-up multiple monitors for one computer. When Ryan and I worked from home, we both had a multiple monitor set-up, just because it was nice to have the extra screen space.

New Poll: Tell Us About Your Monitor(s)

Today we want you to tell us about your monitor(s), and we’ll be polling you about three different things. They are:

  1. Is your monitor an LCD or an old CRT?
  2. What size is your monitor?
  3. How many monitors do you have per computer?

Please choose all answers that apply. You may vote below if you have Flash enabled, or vote in the side-bar to your right.

Previous Poll Wrap-Up

It looks like Google has some work ahead of them if they want people to use Google Chrome as their primary browser. In our last poll we asked what you thought of Google Chrome. According to our poll, 45% of you like Google’s first attempt at a browser, but haven’t made Google Chrome your primary browser. Another good chunk, 20% of you, haven’t even tried it!

iPod Rumors Flourish On The Internet

iPod rumors are always floating around the web, but this rumor seems to match what Apple filed a patent for recently. The iPod that will be released is rumored to have a 4″ screen and operate similar to the picture above. The click-wheel will be replaced by a type of touch screen interface so that the user has the maximum amount of screen space possible. This undeniably does appear to be pretty cool. I can’t wait to see if Apple lives up to all the hype they are receiving.

MIT Announces Quanta As $100 Laptop Manufacturer

This article was written on December 14, 2005 by CyberNet.

MIT One Laptop Per Child

The most renowned laptop in the world right now is probably the $100 laptop developed by Nicholas Negroponte. You mean to tell me that you don’t own one yet? Well, no one does. They have however made a big step today by announcing that the manufacturer from Taiwan, Quanta, will be making these computers for them. They are currently the world’s largest manufacturer of notebook laptops so I am sure that they are a good solution for the job. If you haven’t heard much about the laptop then it is good you know the main jist of it.

The laptop is for a One Laptop Per Child initiative to help those in developing countries get a little boost on technology. It hasn’t officially been said whether there will be a version available for retail sales, but rumors are that they would like to make one to sell in retail stores for around $150. This overcost will help them provide these laptops at the nearly impossible $100 price. It is also energy friendly since it does have a crank that has to be turned to power it. The approximate ratio for power is 1 minute of turning will provide 10 minutes of power. The operating system on this beast will be Linux despite offers from Microsoft and Apple.

Want to order some in bulk? Current bulk orders are in the range of 5 to 15 MILLION laptops. Again, this is because their focus is on selling these to countries, and not stores!

I hope all goes well with the project just to prove Intel’s CEO wrong!

Handwriting Recognition Coming to iPhone?

This article was written on March 31, 2008 by CyberNet.

When Apple announced the  iPhone last year at MacWorld, it seemed as though their goal was to introduce something new and fresh which they successfully accomplished. The phone itself is an incredible device with revolutionary new features. The fact that the iPhone is touch-screen showed that Apple wanted to get away from buttons or a stylus like what we’ve seen in phones and PDA’s for quite a while now, and offer something different. The whole touch-screen method has gone over well for them which is why we’re a little confused at a job that they recently posted on their site.

The job was posted on March 14th on Apple.com, and the title is “Handwriting Recognition Engineer.” When you read the description, you learn that they’re looking for someone to advance Apple’s handwriting recognition technology for Mac OS X. This makes sense if they’re hoping to launch a tablet computer like what has been rumored for a while now but what doesn’t make sense is the last sentence in the description.  It reads, “The recognition technology you create may extend beyond Mac OS X to other applications and the iPhone.” Yes, it says the iPhone. Does this mean that if they were able to perfect the handwriting recognition technology, that they would try to incorporate it into the iPhone? If so, does that mean we might be seeing a stylus with a future generation iPhone?

apple job description

Of course we have to think outside of the box and think about other ways in which Apple could use handwriting recognition technology on the iPhone.   An Engadget commenter (VganTN T) makes this point and says:

Maybe the recognition isn’t for user input…

What about writing on a piece of paper, taking a photo of it, and having any recognized text be put into the notes app?

Ready for editing or emailing.

We really can’t see Apple selling an iPhone with a stylus, so it’ll be interesting to see what comes of this, if anything. Apple could have just thrown that line in the job description about the iPhone to get people talking, who knows! Any thoughts?

Best Buy Gets Two Weeks of Apple TV all to Themselves

This article was written on March 22, 2007 by CyberNet.

BestbuyappleSomehow, Best Buy managed to persuade Apple into giving them two weeks of the Apple TV all to themselves! As we mentioned yesterday, Apple TVs just started shipping. The deal that Best Buy formed with Apple gives them two weeks to sell the unit before any other retailer (other than the Apple store of course)!

However, during this initial two weeks of exclusivity, Best Buy will be given a limited number, only 3,000 units. With over 800 stores and only 3,000 units? Hmm… I’ll let you do the math with this one. If you’re really wanting an Apple TV, and you don’t have an Apple Store nearby (most people don’t), you’re probably better off purchasing online. Chances are, your Best Buy will only be given one or two, if any.
