Intel Haswell Based Chromebooks Announced

An entirely new lineup of Chromebooks has been announced at Intel’s IDF 2013 conference today. These Chromebooks are based on Intel’s Haswell processors which not only offer greater performance, but increased battery life as well. It is said that these processors improve battery life by more than 2X over previous generations. Apple has used Haswell processors for its latest MacBook Air lineup as well, the 13 inch model now touts 12 hours of battery life, according to the company. The new Chromebook lineup features products from a number of manufactures, Acer, ASUS, Toshiba and HP to be precise.

Acer’s new Chromebook is described as “light and portable,” while HP’s new Chromebook14 has a relatively larger display and is offered in various colors. Toshiba is a new entrant, the versatility and portability of its Chromebook are touted. ASUS is a new entrant as well, it has debuted a product called Chromebox, which will basically be a lightweight PC. Not much has been revealed as yet about these new products, they’re said to release over the coming months. No pricing or availability information has been provided. Google says that six of the top laptop manufacturers are now offering Chromebooks, and that it looks forward to “continued advances” in both the hardware and software.

Google Expands The Chromebook Family With New Intel Haswell Hardware From Toshiba, ASUS And More

    2013_chrome_group_no_bg_800

Google had some news to reveal at this year’s big Intel Developer Forum conference today, including new Chromebook hardware from brand new OEM partners, as well as a few existing ones. The new devices will include notebooks powered by Chrome OS from Asus and Toshiba, as well as newly designed models from existing partners Acer and HP, and will roll out “over the coming months,” according to Google.

The new line of Chromebooks are based on Intel’s latest Haswell processor architecture, which offers big benefits in terms of power draw and performance. Google says that leads to battery life that lasts “all day,” though it isn’t being very specific about hardware specs or details yet. The Acer Chromebook is described as “light and portable,” while the HP Chromebook14 will offer a variety of color options as well as 4G connectivity on some models, and Asus is offering a Chromebox for portable desktop computing.

So with new hardware partners included, Google now has six top laptop OEMs working on the Chromebook line, including Samsung and Lenovo, in addition to its own hardware in the high-end Chromebook Pixel. The thin, browser-like Chrome OS is increasingly a popular option for hardware makers looking for a way to defray losses from the shrinking PC market, alongside Android, so it’s not surprising to see more manufacturers come on board. Pricing and other details around the new machines will follow later on.

Dell announces M4800, M6800 Precision laptops built for business pros

Dell announces M4800, M6800 Precision laptops built for business pros

It’s been just over a year since Dell updated its Precision workstations, but the time has come for some fresh hardware. This year’s laptops, the M4800 and M6800, one up their predecessors in all the right places. That means 4th gen Haswell Core i5 and i7 silicon (with or without vPro), and the latest AMD FirePro or NVIDIA Quadro graphics, depending upon your preference. Additionally, the M4800 comes with a 400-nit, 15.6-inch 3,200 x 1,800 IGZO display, the same pixel-packed screen last seen on its M3800 sibling. The M6800, meanwhile, gets just a 1920 x 1080 LCD, but it comes with Wacom 10-finger multitouch capability to make up for its lack of pixels.

Both laptops can be had with up to 32GB of memory, and the 17-inch model comes with four bays that can be stuffed with up to 3.5TB of spinning or solid state storage (M4800 buyers get a mere three bays for a max of 2.5TB). As with the previous models, both laptops get up to a nine-cell 97Wh battery and users can double the juice by adding on a same-sized external slice power pack. Oh, and IT pros can pick which OS they’d like: Windows 7 or 8, and either Red Hat or Ubuntu Linux. You can dig into all the nitty-gritty customization options in the PR below, but we’ll tell you here what you really want to know: the M4800 starts at $1,249, while the M6800 can be yours for $1,599.
