HBO Is “Actively Exploring” Chromecast Streaming Support

HBO Is Actively Exploring Chromecast Streaming Support

Last week Google announced Chromecast, a $35 HDMI dongle that allows users to mirror content from their computers and mobile devices to a TV over Wi-Fi. Netflix is already onboard, recently it was reported that HBO was interested in bringing HBO GO streaming support to Chromecast. A representative for the network, Laura Young, has confirmed to Variety that HBO is “actively exploring” supporting Chromecast, adding that they can not comment right now on specific plans regarding timing.

When Chromecast’s software was tinkered with, mentions of HBO GO were discovered. This points towards the possibility that Google may already be internally testing an HBO GO app for Chromecast. When the support eventually comes, usrs will require a conventional HBO subscription to view regular programming. Right now, Chromecast is able to support video from YouTube, Netflix and purchased content from Google Play store straight out of the box. Google said that it sold out of the initial Chromecast stock within 24 hours of launching it. Through HBO GO, subscribers are allowed to watch over 1,400 titles including every episode of HBO’s original series such as The Sopranos and Game of Thrones.

Discovery Communications working on a HBO Go-esque streaming service

Discovery Communications working on a HBO Goesque streaming service

Discovery Channel, DMAX, 3NET (with Sony and IMAX) and Revision 3 owner Discovery Communications is pondering an HBO Go-style streaming service. In an interview with Reuters, company boss John Hendricks said that shows that are between three and 18 months old can still make money before they’re launched on Netflix. His plan is to let subscribers access that programming online for a small additional monthly fee, which, according to Hendricks’ autobiography, is between $6 and $8 a month. The boss also said that the company is developing the infrastructure for the platform, but that we won’t see such a service arrive for anything up to five years.

HBO CEO Teases HBO Go-Only Subscription Service

HBO CEO Teases HBO Go Only Subscription Service

It’s undeniable one of the most popular premium cable channels to offer an online streaming video service is HBO with its HBO Go service. HBO Go allows you to not only watch recently aired shows, sometimes, being able to watch them online minutes after they’ve aired, but also catch up on complete seasons of older shows, movies and specials. Unfortunately, the only way to view HBO Go is if you’re an HBO subscriber, but that may soon change.

According to Reuters, chief executive at HBO Richard Plepler recently made some interesting comments regarding the evolution of the company’s HBO Go service at a recent premier for Game of Thrones’ third season. ”Right now we have the right model,” Plepler told Reuters. “Maybe HBO GO, with our broadband partners, could evolve.” This, of course, means the company has heard our cries for a streaming-only option for HBO Go as paying a full subscription to be able to use the service seems a little redundant. HBO CEO is considering offering HBO Go without a cable subscription

HBO Go is a streaming video service from the HBO premium cable network that has been around for a while now. HBO Go allows users who subscribe to HBO via a cable or satellite TV company to stream on-demand programs over the Internet from HBO. The available content includes movies and HBO’s popular original series such as Game of Thrones.

Rumors have swirled for a long time that HBO was considering offering access to its Go service without customers needing a cable subscription. Many fans of HBO have been clamoring for this feature as well. The CEO of HBO, Richard Plepler, recently stated that the premium movie channel was considering teaming with broadband Internet providers to offer HBO Go to customers that don’t have cable TV.

Both standard and premium cable TV networks have considered this over the years, but have been worried about offering their services without a subscription for several reasons. Those reasons include cannibalizing traditional profits from cable TV services by enticing viewers to switch to the Internet. Plepler recently stated that HBO Go could be packaged with a monthly Internet service in partnership with broadband providers to reduce the cost.

Customers would pay $50 a month for broadband Internet and an extra $10 or $15 monthly the package HBO Go with the service. Pepper noted that “we would have to make the math work.” Whether or not HBO Go will be offered as a broadband only service remains to be seen. Increasing pressure from Netflix and other providers of online streaming content will certainly place additional pressure on HBO to make a decision.
