Hasta La Gadget!

Canon already gave those looking for a full-frame DSLR plenty to think about recently, and now it’s stirring up the movie-maker’s pot. It’s just announced a new member to its EOS digital cinema collection — the EOS C100 — and given us a better idea of when we can expect that C500 to land. The C100 essentially offers a new prospect for those with pockets not quite so deep. Unlike its 4K sibling, the C100 offers 1,920 x 1,080 AVCHD via its Super 35mm 16:9 CMOS sensor, has an ISO range of 320 to 20,000 and sports the EF mount system. Other features of interest include a push auto iris function, one-shot auto focus, a multi-angle 3.5-inch LCD and a locking HDMI output. The C500, meanwhile, has now been tipped for an October debut with that princely $30,000 price-tag. But, if the C100 sounds more your jive, then you can scoop one up in November for a slightly less tax-deductible $7,999. Canon also took the opportunity to offer up two new cinema lenses: the CN-E15.5-47mm T2.8 L S/SP wide-angle and the CN-E30-105mm T2.8 L S/SP telephoto. Care to know more? The Smart TV Alliance consisting of LG and TP Vision (Philips) is still hammering away at its dream of platform-independent Smart TV apps, and as IFA 2012 gets under way it has a few new announcements. After promising Japanese manufacturers would join back in June it has welcomed Toshiba to the fold, as well as other supporters like Qaulcomm, Mstar, Onigo and YuMe. At IFA 2012, LG is showing off the first apps built to the original SDK 1.0 spec built by Accuweather, Eurosport, online music channel Vilanoise and others. It’s not stopping there however, as the SDK 2.0 we’d heard about is still due before 2012 is out, and has been built to take advantage of the new more powerful SoCs that companies like Qualcomm (the S4 family) and Mstar can provide to HDTV manufacturers.

While LG clearly thinks there’s still some life in the super-wide format, Philips isn’t so sure. In fact, the electronics stalwart has apparently just announced that it won’t be releasing any more 21:9 TVs, due to lack of interest. Despite having regularly released new extra-wide sets since 2009, including 3D models, according to FlatpanelsHD, a spokesperson confirmed that demand barely meets the firm’s requirements for mass production, and as such it’s no longer viable. That’s not to say that Philips is bowing out of big screens altogether though — on the contrary — it goes on to state that 50-inch screens, and above, are becoming increasingly important. For now, however, it looks like it’ll be back to good old 16:9.

The PlayStation 3 snagged a new native YouTube app recently and now the Xbox 360 version has been updated, although with a different set of features. The team behind it says the new version rolling out on Xbox Live is as much as five times faster than the old one, and also has access to channels with official music videos. It should update automatically the next time (Xbox Live Gold) users log in and want to watch Gangnam Style on the big screen, or they can find the new version in the Xbox Live Marketplace — check below for a couple of more screenshots from the new app.

This is it, the crossover where summer and fall programming mix. College football is back in action, and we say good bye to some of our favorite summer TV shows like Breaking Bad. TV fans should also keep an eye out on the disc releases, as many shows boxed sets are hitting shelves before the new season begin airing soon. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Breaking Bad
This weekend the first half of the fifth and final season of AMC’s Breaking Bad comes to a close, before viewers wait for the second half to air in summer 2013. You won’t find any spoilers here, but the path Walter White has taken has certainly arrived at places few would have predicted when the show began. The only question now is how many surprises are left before it all comes to an end.

Doctor Who
Also fresh this weekend is a new series of Doctor Who episodes, kicking off with Asylum of the Daleks. The better news as of late has been BBC America closing the gap in airing new episodes and that DirecTV is carrying the channel in HD at last. If you can’t wait for new shows, check out the Pond Life preview clip embedded after the break.

College Football
While preseason week four of the NFL season is skippable pigskin action, the return of college football this weekend will have us planted firmly in front of our HDTVs. The Hawaii/USC and Michigan/Alabama matchups Saturday night should start the season off with a bang and we can’t wait. Looking for your favorite team in the listings?
