BBC launches updated, interactive live video player ahead of Olympics; lines up ‘summer of 3D’

BBC launches updated, interactive live video player ahead of Olympics lines up 'summer of 3D'

As the London Olympics creep closer, BBC is unveiling more of the technology it plans to use to bring the Games home to UK viewers. In the last few days it’s shown off both the new live video player shown above, as well as a new Facebook app in beta for BBC Sport. The interactive live video player is built to deliver up to 24 HD streams during the Olympics, along with alerts for key events and extra information and stats. It will work on computers and tablets that support Flash, and for those notable ones that don’t, there’s a stripped down version for mobiles and iPads that loses the extra interactivity. The BBC Sport Facebook app will also be able to stream the Games, but also let you see if any of your friends are watching the same stream or what sport is the most popular. Finally, the Beeb has lined up what it’s calling the “Summer of 3D” with a lineup that includes Planet of the Dinosaur, Last Night of the Proms, Wimbledon and the Olympics. There’s a lot going on, hit the source links or check the press releases after the break for the highlights.

Spanish researchers to train FIFA referees on calling plays with stereoscopic 3D, won’t help catch dives

Spanish researchers to train FIFA referees on calling plays, sadly won't catch dives

Spain might be on Cloud Nine after clinching victory in UEFA’s Euro 2012, but a team at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid isn’t resting easy. To help referees know when they should blow the whistle, researchers have recorded 500 simulated offside soccer (yes, football) plays in stereoscopic 3D to give refs a more immersive sense of what it’s like to make the call on the pitch. The hope is to have FIFA more quickly and accurately stopping play without having to spend too much actual time on the grass. We don’t yet know how many referees if any will be trained on the system by the 2014 World Cup, or if it will spread to other leagues — what we do know is that no amount of extra immersion is needed to catch a theatrically fake injury.

Next season NFL will release All-22 game tape, relax blackout rules and start doubleheaders later

Next season NFL will release All22 game tape, relax blackout rules and start later

Even in the offseason we’re still football crazy, and some news has leaked out that will adjust how we watch the NFL. Most recently, the Wall Street Journal reports the league has officially relaxed local blackout requirements, which reduces the chance broadcasts are turned off in a team’s home area if they don’t sell enough tickets. The new rules passed by team owners allow for local broadcasts even with ticket sales at just 85 percent, and while each team can set its own minimum, if it sells more tickets it will have to share more of the revenue with other clubs. Plans to get more fans in the stadium include free WiFi, plus mobile apps (those may cost) with game highlights and the ability to listen in on the sound from field level.

Another change affects doubleheaders, as Fox and CBS will now start their second game ten minutes later than last year at 4:25 PM ET, hopefully avoiding interference with the end of earlier games. Finally, the league has revealed its NFL Game Rewind online replay package (available on Android and iOS tablets for the first time this year) will expand to offer previously restricted angles with its coaches Film feature. Now fans can see the game tape coaches use to evaluate their teams with the “eye in the sky” All-22 view that shows all of the players and end zone cameras. We’ll see if a different viewpoint makes callers into sports talk radio any more knowledgeable about the game, but that seems doubtful.

[Thanks, @RobZuber]

Must See HDTV (July 2nd – 8th)

Must See HDTV July 2nd 8th

UFC 148: Silva vs. Sonnen II
This weekend Chael Sonnen gets his wish. Most of our wishes don’t include being locked in a cage with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, but it’s the only way for Sonnen to take the belt he’s been chasing for the last few years, including a loss in their first title fight in 2010. While we’ll be interested to see if the “best fighter on the planet” Silva can extend his 14-fight winning streak, that’s not the only fight on the card as Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin square off for the third time as light heavyweights. Plus, unlike other sports, UFC isn’t purely tied to subscription pay-TV, so you can watch on YouTube, Roku, Xbox 360, PC or mobile device if you’d like. Check out a video preview for the fight embedded after the break.
(July 7th, PPV, 10PM ET)

Tour de France
Cycling’s biggest race is going on all month on Versus, oops, we mean NBC Sports Network / NBC. While we usually try to avoid getting up early for anything other than Formula 1, fans of the sport can get their stage action at 8AM daily (with a few exceptions). Epic hillclimbs, peloton crashes, inevitable accusations of doping, what’s not to love?
(All week, NBC Sports Network / NBC)

Wimbledon
Completing the sports trifecta for this week’s highlights, Wimbledon action continues after the early rounds last week. Also broadcasting from Europe, Wimbledon is bringing a morning and daytime schedule finishing up with the men’s and women’s finals on Saturday and Sunday. ESPN has locked up the entire schedule and will be broadcasting it live, including on ESPN 3D.
(All week, ESPN / ESPN 3D)

Marvel’s The Avengers Blu-ray hits September 25th, iOS second screen app this month (video)

Marvel's The Avengers Bluray combo pack hits September 25th, iOS second screen app this month video

We don’t have any more details yet on the 10-disc Marvel Cinematic Universe set that popped up on Amazon a month ago, but Disney and Marvel have revealed we can expect Marvel’s The Avengers on Blu-ray September 25th. It will be shipping in the usual assortment of combo packs: four disc with Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD, Digital copy and digital download or two disc Blu-ray and DVD combo for $50 / $40 MSRP (respectively, Amazon currently lists the four disc set for $35). What will arrive first this month however, is The Avengers Initiative: A Marvel Second Screen App, available on iPad and, for the first time for one of Disney’s second screen apps, iPhone. Marvel is promising bi-weekly content updates until September when it moves up to weekly updates of character profiles, interactive comic books and more before the movie even arrives. Extras on disc will include 7.1 DTS-HD MA audio, a gag reel, behind the scenes looks with director Joss Whedon and cast, deleted scenes and more. Check the press release after the break for the full list, plus a new trailer for the Blu-ray.

AMC dropped from Dish Network, cuts a new deal to stay on with AT&T U-verse

AMC dropped from Dish Network, still in negotiations with AT&T

As June expired, so did AMC’s contract with both Dish Network and AT&T U-verse. While negotiations continue with AT&T and its channels remain on for the moment, AMC is already firing at Dish for dropping its channel immediately (after shifting it to an entirely different channel number a few weeks ago), claiming no negotiations have even taken place. As we heard in May, AMC maintains that the real issue is a court case between the two over the Voom HD debacle. For its part, Dish is telling customers the problem is fee increases requested by AMC and “devaluing” its programming by offering it on iTunes, Netflix and Amazon.com. As a result it’s swapping in commercial-free HDNet Movies for AMC, and replacing two other AMC channels, WE and IFC, with Style and HDNet (soon to become AXS TV). We’ll see how these negotiations go — it’s not too bad now but let’s see how viewers react once the new season of Breaking Bad starts airing July 15th.

Update: As we went live, AT&T has announced it reached an agreement with AMC Networks, so it’s only Dish Network that’s on the hotseat now. [Thanks, @soulfliesfree]

Boxee, Comcast agree to a workaround for encrypted basic cable channels on third party boxes

Boxee usually doesn’t get along with the existing media / pay-TV conglomerates, but now it’s telling the FCC it has come to an agreement with Comcast. The solution agreed to lets live TV-friendly Boxee access encrypted basic cable channels thanks to a DLNA-controlled high definition digital transport adapter that would connect to the box via Ethernet, with an eye towards no longer requiring an adapter at all down the road. Multichannel News quotes Boxee CEO Avner Ronen as saying it was “good to work with Comcast” on a deal that gives third parties like his company continued access to basic cable. The benefit for Comcast and other cable companies is that they could progress with encrypted all-digital solutions that would open up bandwidth for things like higher speed internet, something Boxee was arguing against previously. What this means for existing standards like CableCARD or the long awaited AllVid is unclear, but if it’s one step closer to a legitimate option to ditching the cable box, we’ll take it.

BBC introduces Red Button to the internet, thinks they’ll be great pals

BBC to introduce Red Button to the internet, thinks they'll be great pals

Since 1999, the BBC’s Red Button feature has delivered alternative camera angles, sports scores and the like over broadcast spectrum, but it’s now set to become internet enabled. Channel surfers shouldn’t expect a full-blown web experience, however, as the Beebs stresses it’s not about to include everything and the kitchen sink in terms of functionality. Rather, their Connected Red Button aims for simplicity. Punching the clicker could bring up the iPlayer to catch previous episodes of shows or save recipes from a cooking program for later viewing on a computer or smartphone. Companion screen experiences such as the Antiques Roadshow app, which is slated for a September release, are also part of their web-connected roadmap. Mum’s the word on when these new features might roll out, but we’re promised the BBC’s Olympics coverage will give us a taste of what’s to come.
