Unleash the Kraken! Courtesy of Razer, of course

razer-krakenGamers are extremely particular with the kind of hardware that they use, as they continue to see just how far one can push their gaming limits with their natural talent and superior hardware. Well, Razer, a company that has long been involved with gaming hardware and peripherals, have rolled out the Razer Kraken 7.1 Surround Sound USB Gaming Headset which is said to deliver personalized positional audio and an enhanced digital microphone. This definitely sounds like something worth investing in, as it could be the missing piece in the puzzle to your gaming greatness, since you already have a top notch keyboard, mouse and gaming rig, no?

Based on a similar platform as the analog Razer Kraken Pro headset, which was then considered to be the most comfortable headset in the world, the Razer Kraken 7.1 USB gaming headset builds will feature an advanced virtual surround sound engine that is able to deliver ultra-low latency audio processing, hence simulating a 360-degree surround sound experience which normally can be achieved only through the incorporation of more than one positional speaker driver in each ear cup. Apart from that, it is also driven through Razer’s powerful Synapse 2.0 unified configuration software, enabling the engine to achieve a high degree of customization so that you, the gamer, can have a field day tweaking and specifically positioning each surround sound channel, boost bass levels and even balance incoming voice audio for astounding aural precision.

Not only that, with an omnidirectional digital microphone which will be equipped with an optimized algorithm, you can be sure that your commands to other team members will be sent in a crystal-clear voice, where it will be accompanied by a mic mute button and an LED indicator on the tip that lets you know just when the microphone is active or not. Already available to the masses, the Razer Kraken 7.1 Surround Sound USB Gaming Headset can be yours for $99.99 or €99.99, depending on which side of the pond you reside on.

Plantronics’ $130 Rig gaming headset hones in on the mobile gaming crowd

DMP

We’ve known Plantronics to craft solid PC gaming headsets and now, separate from the GameCom series, its new Rig package aims to appease gamers on every platform. The stereo headset itself features a slim profile with circumarual earcups that fold flat and it connects with two included cables: one features a boom mic, while the other packs an in-line remote and mic for smartphones. The heart of the setup lies within a wired mixer, which’ll let you hook up your cellphone, gaming rig (computer or console via USB and Toslink) and the headset simultaneously.

Aside from a slider that lets you adjust the balance of game and chat volume (à la Astro’s Mixamp), you can answer phone calls and re-route the mic as necessary at the press of a rocker switch. What’s more, game audio (including chat) can be mixed into your headset during calls and visa versa via a second balance slider. Lastly, you’ll have a choice of three EQ profiles, including a bass boost for extra wubs. Rig will hit retailers in the fall for $130, and we’re told future products under the moniker will drop beyond that. Full press release after the break.

Epson dangles $1,000 bounty to attract augmented reality apps

Epson hosting Moverio hackathon on August 24th and 25th

Epson’s Moverio BT-100 is one of the more hackable headsets thanks to its Android control box, but few developers have given it a good look. The company may have an incentive for those coders — it’s holding its first-ever Moverio hackathon on August 24th and 25th. Those who visit Epson’s Long Beach headquarters on those days can design and pitch an augmented reality concept in hopes of winning a either $1,000 grand prize or one of two $500 runner-up awards. Space is very limited at just 50 slots, so you’ll want to sign up quickly if you’re interested. Whether or not you can attend, the hackathon is good news for Moverio owners that could soon get more use out of their $699 eyewear.

Turtle Beach Call Of Duty: Ghosts Limited Edition Headsets Pricing RevealedEarlier this year at E3, the showfloor had plenty of “stars”, and it can get pretty difficult trying to filter out all of the “noise”, which is why it is always important to have someone on the ground to do the running and figure out just what is cool to share with the masses. Headsets come and go, but sometimes, there are just some limited edition versions of a particular device that deserve special mention – case in point, the Call of Duty: Ghosts limited edition headsets that hail from Turtle Beach. We are glad to say that the final design, packaging and pricing for the Call of Duty: Ghosts limited edition headsets have been revealed, where you will find a black leather headband with blue stitching, a bone-colored body, as well as the distinctive Ghosts mask graphic appear on the speaker plates.

The Call of Duty: Ghosts Ear Force Spectre happens to be a special edition of the tournament-grade SEVEN Series headset, where it will boast of an in-line amp so that you can control it using your fingertips. HTC Mini+ companion device coming to the UK with added functionality

HTC Mini companion device coming to the UK with added functionality

When the HTC Butterfly (better known as the Droid DNA here in the US) launched in China several months ago, it was soon followed by a companion device called the HTC Mini. This accessory — not to be confused with HTC’s One mini — is basically designed to be a Bluetooth handset and remote control for the larger smartphone. It features NFC for pairing, plus a numeric keypad and monochrome LCD. What’s more intriguing, however, is that UK retailer Clove recently outed an update to the product — the HTC Mini+ — which gains an IR blaster and the ability to remote control a variety of TVs, along with HTC’s Media Link HD. The companion device is expected to be available soon fort £54.16 (about $83) before taxes.

Sound Band Open Ear Bluetooth Headset: Noise-allowing Headset

Many mid- to high-end headphones have noise-cancelling features. But sometimes you need to hear what’s going on around you. That’s where open ear headphones come in. The Sound Band is one such device. It’s a Bluetooth headset that conducts sound through your bone and tissue. Your ears will be uncovered and you’ll be the only one who hears what’s coming through the Sound Band.

As I said, Sound Band falls into an existing class of headphones. Similar products include the earHero and the AfterShokz. What intrigues me about the Sound Band are its two omnidirectional MEMS microphones. Hybra Advance Technology, the company behind Sound Band, claims that the microphones have noise reduction and echo cancellation.

If they can get that part right, they might have a leg up on the competition.

Pledge at least $125 (USD) on Kickstarter to get a Sound Band as a reward (Hybra says the product will retail at $189). Or just take your earphones off for a minute. That’s an option too. I’m just putting it out there.

LG outs diminutive Bluetooth headset with 8 hours of battery life

LG outs diminutive Bluetooth headset with 8 hours of battery life

LG’s big ticket items may take up most of our attention span, but the South Korean firm’s latest Bluetooth headset solution has caught our eye. Coming in at roughly the size of a matchbox (35.9 × 50.2 × 19.2mm), the BTS1 boasts an 8 hour battery life, features a built-in clip, supports the aptX codec and packs on-board controls for volume, pause and play, sifting through songs and handling phone calls. With the help of Bluetooth 3.0, the pack connects to smartphones, laptops, tablets and even TVs — yes, even those in LG’s 2013 line-up — with the wireless standard baked in. Of course, you could always lean on a Roku 3 if you’re hankering for a wire-free television experience for your earbuds. There’s no word of a US release, but if you find yourself in PSY’s homeland, you’ll be able to score one for 59,000 won (roughly $53).
