Smart Solar House To Undergo Testing

Smart Solar House To Undergo TestingIn this day and age, there are many kinds of “smart” items out there, ranging from smart cars to smartphones and perhaps in the near future, smart houses. Having said that, Sekisui House Ltd, Toshiba Corp and Honda Motor Co Ltd have announced that all three have collaborated in order to work on a house that actually takes into consideration as to what life is like down the road – or 2020 to be exact.

To build something that is not quite available just yet can prove to be quite a challenge, but this has not stopped such a co-operative move. Different kind of technologies were used, where among these include information technology, personal transportation vehicles and an energy management technology which is capable of controlling energy supply and demand for households, vehicles and the neighborhood in a comprehensive manner.

This unique home will be able to fit in two families, where it will offer a mutual supply of electricity and hot water among others between households. Not only that, there will also be a wireless charging system for electric vehicles built into the mix in order to live up to its billing of being a smart house of the future. What do you think of this particular effort?

Roombots Pave The Way For Reconfigurable Furniture

Roombots Pave The Way For Reconfigurable FurnitureHave you watched X-Men: Days of Future Past in the cinemas already? It is definitely worth checking out, especially the way the sentinels work and function. Well, I suppose it is somewhat similar to the scene in Transformers: Age of Extinction trailer, where Stanley Tucci’s character proclaimed that the Transformer’s techno-organic material is one of science’s most important discoveries. Well, what if tiny robotic modules around your home would work in a similar manner? This is what the Roombots are all about.

The Roombots happen to be the brainchild of Swiss researchers who intend to develop reconfigurable robotic modules which will be able to connect with one another, enabling them to form just about any kind or type of furniture, and even change their shape as and when required. For instance, once you’re done eating on the dining table, have it “transform” into a coffee table for use in the living room.

These self-assembling Roombots happen to band together in order to form static furniture, where they are attached to one another using various connectors that allows them to take on the desired form factor. The ultimate goal? To create self-assembling interactive furniture which is capable of being used in various ways.

Samsung Stops Selling Paid Applications Through Smart TVs

Samsung Stops Selling Paid Applications Through Smart TVs

Samsung has announced that it is no longer going to distribute paid applications through its smart TVs and connected Blu-ray platforms. The company notified users of this change through an email. It is also issuing refunds to customers who had already bought paid utilities through its smart TV platform. Samsung gave no reason as to why it felt the need to stop selling paid applications through smart TVs.

The company says that despite this change a few paid applications will continue to function even after it stops selling them. However customers who have already bought those applications will not be entitled to a refund. Only those customers will be eligible for refunds who bought applications that will be removed from the Smart Hub.

Even though Samsung hasn’t officially provided a reason for this change, its evident that the company wasn’t able to find traction with this model on its smart TVs. Therefore from now onwards it will only offer free utilities on its smart TV platform.

Samsung also pointed out to clear confusion that this change does not affect streaming services. Since this change only affects apps purchased from Samsung TV Apps Store, it won’t limit users’ access to subscription services like Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, Redbox Instant, Pandora, Spotify and more.

Nest Thermostat Is Now Available From The Play Store

Nest Thermostat Is Now Available From The Play Store

Nest launched its very first thermostat back in 2011. The product quickly became popular due to its ability to adjust itself after “learning” the user’s habits. Earlier this year in January Google announced that it has acquired Nest for $3.2 billion. Nest was founded by Tony Fadell, who previously worked at Apple. We expected that Google will gradually integrated the product into its ecosystem and it certainly has. Today the Nest thermostat has officially gone on sale through the Google Play Store.

The formal announcement comes a day after we first spotted Nest on Play Store. Listing for this product was pulled shortly after, leading us to believe that Nest wasn’t exactly supposed to go on sale at that moment. Through Play Store the Nest Learning Thermostat costs $249.

To commemorate Earth Day, Google will plant a tree for every Nest unit sold today through its store. So if you’ve been meaning to pick one up today would be the best day, get your Nest fix and make Mother Nature happy in the process.

Google is currently selling the thermostat through its store in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. Currently it lists shipping estimates between 1-2 days, however if sales are really good, one can expect shipping times to slip.

Hydro-electric Toilet Helps You Generate Electricity With Each Flush

A hydroelectric dam is always a good idea when it comes to generating green power, but there are case studies which show that there will also be a largely negative environmental impact if large swathes of the forest is chopped down and cleared to make way for the dam, displacing the indigenous peoples along the way. Well, one thing is for sure – most of us do live in relatively modern homes these days, where our toilets have a flushing system to get rid of whatever waste deposited. How about using each flush in your toilet to generate electricity? This is what what a South Korean research team has decided to do.

Youn Sang Kim is the one leading this team of researchers, where they have come up with a new kind of toilet. Once it is installed, you will be able to flush without feeling too guilty, as electricity is being generated with each lever pump. Of course, you would also need to flush just and when you need to, and not with wanton abandon since water is growing to be an extremely scarce resource in the world, so much so that future wars might even be fought over water – and not oil. The system is said to be so efficient, even the kinetic energy of a single drop of water that strikes its transducer is capable of powering an LED bulb for a short moment.

Nest Thermostat Briefly Spotted On Google Play

Nest Thermostat Briefly Spotted On Google PlayA couple of years ago, former Apple SVP of the iPod, Tony Fadell, launched his own company and a new product called the Nest learning thermostat. The device, for those unfamiliar, will learn your habits at home and will be able to adjust the thermostat automatically and according to what it thinks you like, thus taking home automation to the next level.

It was also earlier this year that Google announced that they would be acquiring the company and we guess it is not surprising to think that Google could soon start selling the device themselves. Thanks to a recent sighting on Google Play, it seems that the device could soon be put up for sale.

The listing was originally spotted by the folks at Droid-Life before it was quickly taken down by Google, presumably because the device wasn’t meant to go up for sale just yet. However like we said earlier, with Google now owning the company, it would not be so far-fetched to think that they wouldn’t sell the device themselves as opposed to sitting back and letting Apple handle its sales.

In any case there’s no telling when the device will go up for sale on Google Play, but with the recent sighting, we can only assume that it will be soon (hopefully).
