LG SoundPlate Puts the Sound Under Your TV

While there are plenty of soundbars available for improving the sound of your home theater, most of them have to sit in front of your TV set or hang above or below it on the wall. The LG SoundPlate takes a different approach, by sitting underneath your flat screen TV’s base.

The latest generation of the SoundPlate, the LAB540W measures just 1.56-inches-tall, and can handle TVs measuring from 32 to 55 inches on top of it – though LG hasn’t announced a weight limit yet. This design allows the speaker to have a much deeper enclosure for improved sound, plus it provides an integrated 3D compatible Blu-ray player and amplifier, which makes for a much cleaner look than if you had a standalone Blu-ray player and a home theater receiver.

The all-in-one system offers a total of 320 watts, and is a “4.1″ system despite having no rear speakers – so I imagine that it offers some kind of virtual surround tech. For room-filling bass, it uses a wireless subwoofer.

There’s no word yet on pricing or a release date for the LAB540W SoundPlate.

Thanks to these custom tiles, I can finally turn my room into the Death Star. They look amazing. You really could turn any room into a Death Star. Death Star shower? You could do that. And it would be amazing. Of course then you would need some Death Star soap to go with it. This station would be the… ultimate shower in the universe!

Artist and designer Victor Brown collaborated with Tom Spina Designs when his client wanted a sci-fi inspired custom home theater. One requirement was wall tiles that you can’t just find at your local Home Depot. They came up with tiles that look like the Death Star Trench run scene from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

They designed 14 different 12″x12″ sculptures, then artist Lonnie Hale reproduced a total of 120 Death Star tiles in cast resin. They were installed under the home theater’s screen and along the lower walls and steps. As you can see in the video and it really completes the theme. I want a whole wall full of these amazing tiles.

Gunnar 3D Glasses might make 3D movies more tolerable

While 3D movies are a big deal, people are either in love with it, or hate it. For those of you that are fond of this type of viewing experience, there are a variety of different products ranging from cameras to televisions that have heavy emphasis on this aspect. For the cinematic world, you can’t just watch a 3D movie without sporting some silly looking glasses, but it’s always a game of chance finding a pair that isn’t scratched up or gross from being used by someone else.

If you’d prefer to bring in your own glasses and have a pair for home, then the Gunnar 3D Glasses might be up your alley. This is an extremely fancy pair of 3D glasses that are probably as top-notch as you’re going to get. They have adjustable nose pads so they can fit your face, an onyx frame, and were built to protect your eyes from drying out. It also has anti-reflective properties to reduce the amount of glare you have to deal with.

There are filters that will help you get nothing but 3D imagery without ghosting. While these do cost $40, they will only add to your experience and will hold up far better than what you might pick up at the theater. They are also slightly tweaked to make seeing through them crystal clear. Personally, these sorts of movies make me sick to my stomach.
