    Homeshell Flat Pack Home

The kings of flat packs – Ikea, will certainly be more than proud with the Homeshell, an abode that was designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP). Just what is Homeshell all about? It so happens to be an innovative, low-cost building that has been located in the courtyard of the Royal Academy in London, where it has been constructed using Insulshell, which happens to be a flexible and highly energy efficient building system that could prove to be a solution to the UK’s existing housing crisis (for the middle class and poor, of course).

This particular installation is a three and a half story building that will be delivered as flat-pack panels on a truck, taking a mere 24 hours to assemble on-site, now how about that? You can check out a time-lapse film of the construction and be impressed with how this particular innovative building system will be able to come together in such a short amount of time. Once its time on display at the Royal Academy is over, it will be dismantled before being rebuilt on a site in Mitcham, where it will have a more permanent residence there, being outfitted with all the necessary furnishings so that it can function as a showhouse for those who are interested.

LG Unveils Lightwave DIOS Oven With NFC Capabilities

LG Unveils Lightwave DIOS Oven With NFC CapabilitiesNot many smartphones out there are equipped with NFC, although it seems that the trend is slowly starting to pick up these days. However for those who do own a smartphone with NFC capabilities, here’s a somewhat novel, albeit useful, way of using it at home. LG has recently announced a new Lightwave DIOS oven that is NFC-equipped. What this means is that smartphone owners with NFC are able to use their smartphones together with the oven. Basically through an accompanying app, the smartphone will be able to list around 220 different cooking options with presets attached to them.

For example if you wanted to roast a chicken but weren’t sure how long, just use the app and it will all be entered into the oven for you, and thanks to the use of NFC, you can browse the cooking options on your phone instead of hunched over the oven fiddling with knobs and buttons. Other features of the oven include an Air Fry mode that uses very little oil and according to LG, will reduce fat intake by as much as 77% which would definitely appeal to the health-conscious customer. No word on when LG will be releasing their Lightwave DIOS or how much it will cost, but what do you guys think? Could you see yourself getting one of these bad boys for your kitchen?

Glow In The Dark Toilet Seat Helps You Stay On Target

Glow In The Dark Toilet Seat Helps You Stay On Target

If there’s one thing we know you probably hate to do, it’s getting up in the middle of the night to handle some emergency business in the bathroom. Sometimes your body just doesn’t want to wait until you wake up, and needs to get whatever is currently inside you out immediately. When you finally make it to the bathroom, we know the last thing you want to do is turn on the light for fear of it blinding your sensitive peepers, which can make finding your toilet rather difficult. If you had the glow in the dark toilet seat, that’s one less thing you’ll have to worry about after a night of spicy Mexican food. (more…)

Chewed Through MagSafe Adapter Still Manages To Power This Lamp

Chewed Through MagSafe Adapter Still Manages To Power This LampIf you own a pet like a dog, chances are a lot of things at home get chewed up. Newspapers, slippers, shoes, and etc., and it does get pretty expensive especially when chargers for laptops get their wires chewed through, which is what happened to Brian Richer of Castor Design. According to Richer, “my dog, lola, chewed though all of the magsafe cables in my house. i noticed that even though the ends were hanging on by a thread, they still passed power. eventually, i ended up with 3 or 4 adapters that still worked, but that i didn’t want to use with my computer. i didn’t want to throw them away, so, after some trial and error, i got them to power up some leds using the magsafe head.”

The end result is pictured above, a lamp (dubbed the Coil Lamp) that is powered by Apple’s MagSafe adapter. It is a pretty clever idea and a great way to reuse a product that most of us might have thrown out or taken back to the Apple store to replace (if possible). Unfortunately while the lamp looks pretty awesome, it is pretty expensive as well and will set you back a cool $950, but hey, the price we pay for nice designs, right?

Smart Glass Blocks Out Heat And Light Via Switch

Smart Glass Blocks Out Heat And Light Via SwitchWe have seen many devices as well as things in life roll out with the “smart” prefix, ranging from smart cars to smartphones, and of course, smart windows. Well, this is yet another invention that can be labelled under the smart window department – it happens to be a smart glass that has a spray-on coating which can block heat as well as light with but a single flick of a switch, resulting in a step towards more energy-efficient windows. What you see above is an example of this smart glass, where the segment on the left has some film sprayed onto it, while the area on the right remains pretty much an ordinary glass.

This engineered window coating can be adjusted so that it will be able to respond to changing weather conditions accordingly. As to how much heat and light it lets in or blocks out, the same principle applies – a small surge of voltage will be sent to the material, kicking it into action. It is hoped that the ability to perform well in hot as well as cold climates might translate to huge energy savings at the end of the day – not only for individual homes, but as a nation on the whole.

Baby Monitor Hacked, Gave Parents A Scare

Baby Monitor Hacked, Gave Parents A ScareMost folks who are new parents for the first time would not mind forking out rolls of money just to ensure that their bundle of joy gets nothing but the very best, including being able to keep an eye (as well as an ear) on the little one throughout the night, even from a different room. This is made possible thanks to advancements in modern day technology such as baby monitors, but the parents of a couple of young kids were rattled after they realized that their baby monitor was hacked.

To compound things even further, the hacker did something which was extremely disturbing afterwards – as the father of the two kids, along with his wife, claimed to have heard a detached voiced mumbling sexual things to their two-year-old daughter. Marc Gilbert and his wife have relied on their Internet connected baby monitor for so long, that he said, “We almost couldn’t live without it.” Unfortunately for them, someone managed to hacked their baby monitor, and he believed that his router was first to get hacked before the camera was next. Well, it goes to show just how important it is to always ensure that your home networks are as secure as possible.

Philips Hue susceptible to hack, vulnerable to blackouts (video)

Oh, Philips. Why’d you have to make it so easy for ne’er-do-wells to go full Aiden Pearce on Hue smart light users? A recent study by researcher Nitesh Dhanjani reveals that Hue’s control portal — known as the bridge — uses a shoddy authentication system when communicating with smartphones and computers. That system uses the bridge’s MAC address, which is easy to detect. As such it’s also easy to hack the device and cause a blackout.

In Dhanjani’s demo video below, he introduces malware into the bridge through a compromised website. This lets him find the right MAC address and take control, turning the lights off again and again, ad infinitum, regardless of the switch’s status. Sure, there’s no immediate threat of widescale blackouts — smart lighting has yet to be adopted en masse, after all — but this is a security issue companies need to address, especially since lighting plays such a critical safety role.
