Marketing slide suggests Sony's Honami smartphone may shoot 4K video

Alright, we admittedly don’t know a great deal about the provenance of the slide above. It was first picked up on Chinese social networking site Weibo, but the original post seems to have been deleted. What we do know, however, is that Sony’s forthcoming flagship phone, codenamed Honami, has already been rumored to possess a 4K-ready processor (the Snapdragon 800), and that Sony is wildly enthusiastic about 4K as something that can unite its expanding hardware ecosystem. The slide’s title therefore has a ring of truth to it, because it’s accompanied by Bravia branding and sounds like realistic marketing babble from a TV-focused presentation:

“How do you get 4K content? By shooting videos with a 4K cellphone.”

The slide also details a 20-megapixel Exmor R rear camera sensor for Honami, which tallies with earlier reports, as well as a meaty 2.2-megapixel front-facing camera. The only issue we have is with the quoted 4K video resolution of 4,000 x 2,000 — it’s unusual and doesn’t match the Ultra HD resolution Sony has settled on for its 4K TVs (3,840 x 2,160). In any case, resolution is only half the story. This is all speculative, of course, but if other bottlenecks in this phone forced Sony to compress the heck out of captured 4K video, there’s every chance it’d end up looking worse than 1080p.

Alleged Sony Xperia Honami Is All Masked Out

Alleged Sony Xperia Honami Is All Masked OutCan you keep a secret? Many companies would most probably ask that particular question to their employees whenever they have some sort of top secret, flagship device that is being prepared to be unleashed upon the masses. One of the more common methods would be to use a different shell or case as a red herring, and Sony Mobile has employed this exact strategy to shield the upcoming Sony Honami – or at least that is what speculations point to with what you see above, from curious and prying eyes. The image above hails from Adam Outler of xda-developer fame, where it has been tagged as an “Unannounced Sony device”. Do you like what you have seen so far, or do you wish that something clearer could actually surface eventually, just like how the lime colored iPhone 5C was recently spotted?

In recent times, much has been said about the Sony Honami, ranging from the “confirmation” of its 20 megapixel camera to an alleged teaser image leaking out with a potential September 4th launch date. Remember, those are but rumors, so there is still some ways left to go before we get to see whether the rumored September 4th release date would actually pan out or not.

Alleged Photo Taken By Sony Honami “Confirms” 20MP Camera

Alleged Photo Taken By Sony Honami Confirms 20MP CameraOver the past couple of months we have seen alleged specs and photos of the upcoming Sony Xperia i1, or Honami, with one particular photo seemingly confirming the fact that the Honami could come with a 20MP camera. Well thanks to a recently uploaded photo allegedly taken by the device, it seems that a camera with a 20MP sensor can be confirmed. While the photo’s EXIF data does not explicitly name the Honami, it shows the device’s model number to be that of the C6902 which is supposedly that of the non-LTE version of the phone. The EXIF data reveals the phone’s 20.65MP camera in 4:3 mode along with a aperture of f/2.0.

While Sony has yet to confirm the Honami, a recently leaked image has suggested that just like Samsung, Sony could be holding an event a few days prior to IFA 2013 to announce the device, which according to the image points at a 4th of September announcement. The Honami is also expected to be somewhat similar to the Xperia Z, albeit with an upgraded camera. Either way we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more news, so check back with us at a later date for the details.

Alleged Sony Honami Teaser Image Leaked, Points At 4th September Launch

Alleged Sony Honami Teaser Image Leaked, Points At 4th September LaunchThe Sony Honami is certainly no secret, having been spotted in benchmarks and leaked photos, and last we heard it was possible that Sony could be looking to announce the device around IFA, either before or during the event, and thanks to a recently leaked photo, what we are looking at above could very well be a teaser image for the upcoming device, or the event invite for Sony’s press conference. As the image above suggests, the Sony Honami could be announced on the 4th of September in Berlin which is where IFA is taking place. This is an interesting coincidence since Samsung is also rumored to announce their Galaxy Note 3 and their smart watch on the same day as well.

Either way the image above could have easily been photoshopped so there’s no telling if it is real, so be sure to take it with a grain of salt for now. In the meantime we’ll definitely be keeping our eyes peeled for more info as we expect Sony will share details as IFA draws closer, but what do you guys think? Is a pre-IFA announcement likely with Sony as well? After all we’re guessing they’re hoping to steal some of the spotlight from Samsung, and what better device than the Honami, right?

Alleged Sony Xperia i1 Honami Photo Surfaces, “Confirms” 20MP Camera

Alleged Sony Xperia i1 Honami Photo Surfaces, Confirms 20MP CameraIt seems like Sony’s Honami (or Xperia i1) is as badly kept a secret as Motorola’s Moto X because thanks to newly leaked images showing off the back portion of the phone, it seems that it might be confirmed that the phone will indeed sport a 20MP camera in accordance to the rumors.

As you can see in the image above, the back of the phone shows the camera long with “XX.XMP”, and according to the speculation of some, this would indicate that when the phone is released, the “XX.XMP” would be replaced by the “20.XMP” wording. The reason the device is showing “X” now is probably because it is a prototype and is apparently a pretty common practice in the industry.

In any case there is always the possibility that the image above is fake, and that the “XX.XMP” could be for different-sized sensor and not necessarily 20MP (previous rumors suggested anywhere between 16 to 20MP), but with the Sony Xperia i1 expected to debut at IFA 2013 later this year, we won’t have to wait too long for all the official details!

    Sony Honami Spotted At GFXBench

Sony Honami Spotted At GFXBenchThe Sony Honami has long been known to be the next flagship smartphone from the folks over at Sony Mobile, has already hit the FCC in recent times. However, those who are wondering just what the Sony Honami has in store underneath the hood will be pleased to check out the smartphone (that is known as the C6903 where model numbers are concerned) has already made an appearance over at the GFXbench database, where along the way, has confirmed the long rumored Snapdragon 800 chipset from Qualcomm that will be accompanied by a quartet of Krait 400 cores, in addition to a Full HD display alongside on-screen buttons and the latest Adreno 330 chip. Of course, such a leak is one step ahead than the usual image leaks that we have seen in the past.

It must be noted that the scores posted by the potent GPU were more than just impressive, where the image above tells part of the whole story. We do expect to see the Sony Honami rock this year’s IFA 2013 in Berlin, Germany.

Sony Xperia Honami Hits The FCC

Sony Xperia Honami Hits The FCCOver the past couple of weeks or so, we have seen our fair share of devices that have made their way over to the FCC, which is more or less one of the final hurdles that a particular piece of consumer electronics device has to go through before it is deemed safe and sound to be released to the masses. The upcoming Sony PS4 console has made its way to the FCC, the iPhone Lite as recent as early this morning, a possible Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 which will jive with AT&T, the list could go on. However, here we are with yet another smartphone that has appeared over at the FCC, and it is none other than the upcoming Sony flagship device, the Sony Xperia Honami.

The FCC report did mention that the Sony Xperia Honami is set to be announced before September 30 is over, and those who are interested in picking up this bad boy will be able to do so by the time the first week of October ends. We did wish that the FCC documents discovered did reveal more about the Sony Xperia Honami, but unfortunately, we will still have to rely on rumors at the moment, such as a 5-inch Full HD triluminos display with the X-reality engine, a quad-core 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB RAM, a 20.7-megapixel camera at the back that has a Sony G-lens and BIONZ image processor, 16GB of internal memory, which can be augmented via a microSD memory card slot, is IP57 certified, and will boast of Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, Wi-Fi and GSM/UMTS/LTE connectivity.

Sony’s flagship Honami smartphone sneaks into FCC’s database

Sony's flagship Honami smartphone sneaks into FCC's database

In the past, Sony hasn’t been too strict about issuing confidentiality requests when slipping its Xperia smartphones into the FCC’s database. The Honami, however, is no typical Xperia. For those unaware, manufacturers generally submit equipment to the FCC for testing shortly before the product is ready to launch on US shores — once its radios are cleared for use on the airwaves that the FCC controls, precious little stands between said product and your hands.

We’ve seen a stream of Honami leaks over the past few weeks, but none have indicated quite so clearly that it’s nearly ready for a formal debut. The filing masks all internal and external photos, but a software version entitled “s_atp_honami_1_25_1” (seen after the break) makes obvious what device we’re looking at. This, Motorola’s X, and an impending iPhone refresh? Looks like we’re in for a star-studded autumn in the handset universe.

Sony Honami Leaked Again Beside Xperia Z

Sony Honami Leaked Again Beside Xperia ZThe Sony i1 Honami is said to be a next generation flagship smartphone from Sony Mobile, and we have seen our fair share of leaks in recent times, which can only mean one thing – it is surely being prepared for a public release real soon. Well, right now, the Sony Xperia Z is sitting pretty somewhere on the high end verandah where smartphones hang out, but it looks set to be replaced by the Sony i1 Honami in due time. This time around, we have a leaked photo of the Sony i1 Honami that has been spotted beside the Sony Xperia Z, in addition to some more details concerning the Honami’s rumored 20-megapixel camera.

A recent system dump did show off what is new where the digital camera on the Sony i1 Honami is concerned, but this time around, at least it has been confirmed that the Honami will more or less carry a 20-megapixel camera. Sony’s recent smartphones do come with pretty decent cameras, and we do hope that this 20-megapixel shooter will be able to duke it out with the best of the rest when released.
