HP Gets Back Into The Smartphone Game With 6- And 7-Inch Monster Handsets

hp-slate6-1025-a

HP isn’t letting a little thing like its Palm’s WebOS debacle stop it from trying to crack the lucrative smartphone market – it revealed to Re/code today that it will ship new 6- and 7-inch Android-powered smartphones beginning in February, kicking off in the growing Indian mobile market.

The smartphones (no they’re not tablets, though their size would seem to indicate otherwise) distinguish themselves by being voice-operated, and based on HP’s first render pictured above, look an awful lot like a scaled up BlackBerry Z10 or Z30, with the pixelated back panel of a Nexus 4.

The HP Slate 6 and Slate 7, as they’re called, are powered by Android 4.2, sport a quad core processor and each have 16GB of onboard storage, complete with MicroSD card expandability for adding up to 32GB more. Neither is full HD resolution, with the Slate 6 offering 1,280 x 700 pixels on its IPS display, and the Slate 7 bumping that up a notch with 1,280 x 800. They’re both under 10mm thick, and they sport a modest 5-megapixel rear shooter, with a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. They also have front-facing speakers, a rarity among tablets or phones.

hp_slate6According to what HP told Re/code, these won’t necessarily be coming to North America or anywhere else in the world. HP is targeting them at India specifically because it has a tremendous foothold there, where it leads the PC industry by a good margin, and because they found the strongest interest there from consumes when polling various markets.

One thing I’ll give HP right away: They’re officially referring to these things as “voice tablets,” which makes much more sense than trying to get away with referring to them primarily as smartphones, given their size. They still support standard phone voice contracts, however. Who knows? Maybe there will only be voice tablets by the year 2020, and anything remotely smartphone-sized will have gone the way of the dodo. Note that I’d do anything to prevent this bleak dystopian future from coming to pass.

HP Slate 7 price drop slides well below Nexus 7 competitor

It’s no small matter when an everyman device like a 7-inch tablet with a small base cost appears from a major manufacturer – especially when they then lower that price just after it’s been released to the market. This has indeed happened with the HP Slate 7 in both of its configurations in what must be seen as either a reaction to so-so reviews on the web in its initial drive or continued opposition from those that would rather pick up the machines biggest competitor: the ASUS-made Google Nexus 7.

slashgear-00023-580x385

When you see the HP Slate 7, it’s difficult not to confuse it for the ASUS-made tablet of essentially the same size. Both devices have innards and a display that are exceedingly similar, while the Slate 7 offers oddities such as a gray or red back panel where the Nexus machine just comes in black. The HP machine also comes in a smaller size than the Nexus 7 – taking the place of the no-longer-available 8GB edition of the tablet with its own machine of the same size.

Here in a grab at lowest-possible-price-point, HP appears to be willing to push their costs down 17.6 and 15 percent respectively for the 8GB and 16GB models they’ve got on the market today. The 8GB edition of the HP Slate 7 therefor rings in at $139.99 while the 16GB version aims at $169.99.

Meanwhile the Nexus 7 will cost you $199 USD as a base cost, starting with the 16GB edition. There’s also a set of 32GB editions of the machine available for $249 and $299, depending on configuration.

It should be made clear that while the HP Slate 7 works with a dual-core 1.6GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor with 1GB of RAM, the Google Nexus 7 employs a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor with 4-PLUS-1 technology (that meaning you’ve got an extra core in there for low-power tasks). We’ve had a bit more success with using the Nexus 7 for all activities (save back-facing camera action of course) than the HP thus far.

HP Slate 7 Review

HP’s first go-around with a tablet didn’t actually go so well. The webOS-based TouchPad didn’t last long and was quickly discontinued. However, the company is back with another slate, only this time it’s running the more widely-adopted Android operating system, and it seems as though HP wants to give tablets another whack with its first-ever

HP Slate 7 hitting the UK on May 1 for £129

In case you were curious about the status of HP’s Slate 7 Android tablet, you may be pleased to know that it finally has a ship date in the UK. The new tablet from HP, which was first introduced at Mobile World Congress back in February, will be making its way to the UK on May 1, where residents there can purchase it for £129.

Originally, the tablet was said to be delayed into June, but HP eventually updated its product page again and noted that the tablet would release sometime this month. However, it looks like the company will just barely miss that time frame, as the UK will get the tablet just one day after the end of April.

On HP’s UK listing of the Slate 7, it mentions an availability date of May 1, but it looks like you can pre-order the tablet right now As for a release date in the US, there’s no word on when that’ll happen (except for a vague April 2013 window), but you can expect to pay $170 for the tablet, which undercuts Google’s famed Nexus 7 by a whole $30.

The HP Slate 7 comes with a 1024×600 7-inch display and it runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box. Under the hood there’s an ARM Cortex-A9 dual-core processor clocked at 1.6 GHz with 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage. Overall, not a bad product for what you’ll be paying, but the small 8GB storage may turn away some users.

HP Slate 7 and Sony Xperia Tablet Z delayed [UPDATE]

We saw some pretty cool stuff at Mobile World Congress this year, and there definitely wasn’t a shortage of tablets. Two slates in particular that we got our hands on were the HP Slate 7 and the Sony Xperia Tablet Z. However, you’ll be waiting longer than expected, as both tablets have been delayed into June and May, respectively.

hp-slate-7

Originally, HP said that its new Slate 7 tablet would be available sometime next month, but the company has pushed back the release to June, giving eager buyers a couple more months to mull over their decision. However, we’re not exactly sure why the tablet is delayed. It went through the FCC without any problems, so perhaps HP simply wanted to make some slight last-minute changes.

As for the Xperia Tablet Z, the tablet released on March 22 in Japan, but it has yet to see the light of day in other parts of the world. It was also originally set for a release sometime next month, but it has been pushed back to May. As with the HP Slate 7, there’s no word on exactly what’s causing the delay, but again, it’ll give more time to those eager shoppers to think about whether or not go for it.

The Xperia Tablet Z was one of the more nicer tablets that we saw at Mobile World Congress last month. It’s got a 10-inch 1080p HD display and it runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box. When it eventually does make its way to the states, it’ll cost $499 for the 16GB model — right on par with Apple’s entry-level iPad.

Update: HP has updated its Slate 7 product page, and the release date is now listed as “April 2013.”

HP Slate 7 Quietly Delayed To June

HP Slate 7 Quietly Delayed To June

This year’s Mobile World Congress served as a launchpad for HP to announce its upcoming Slate 7 Android tablet that will be priced aggressively against the Kindle Fire and other budget-minded tablets at $169. The Slate 7 was expected to be released this April, but it looks as through your dream of owning it next month will keep being a dream as HP has quietly delayed its release to June.

Instead of making a big to do about its delay, HP updated the Slate 7′s product page to say it will be released in June.  There’s no official word from HP as to what the exact issue is that resulted in their upcoming tablet to be delayed, but we’re sure we’ll hear something from the company in due time. Hopefully its delay won’t result in less sales as some potential Android tablet customers may be looking at the next-generation Nexus 7.

HP looks to give consumer tablets another go

HP is forming a new Mobility division which will make another attempt and breaking into the tablet space. This much was confirmed in a internal memo unearthed by The Verge, and details HP’s plan to form what has been dubbed the “Mobility Global Business Unit.” At first, HP’s Mobility GBU will focus on developing consumer tablets, and will do so under the guidance of Alberto Torres, who most recently was in charge of Nokia‘s MeeGo products.

The memo itself comes from Printing and Personal Systems Group boss Todd Bradley, who says that Torres will be starting on September 3. After tackling the consumer tablet space, HP Mobility GBU will then “expand to additional segments and categories where we believe we can offer differentiated value to our customers.” Torres will not be taking the reins on HP’s incoming commercial tablet, as that will be staying with HP’s PC Global Business Unit, overseen by James Mouton. The same goes for HP’s notebook teams, but Bradley seems to suggest that the Mobility and PC GBUs will be merging (or at least collaborating) at some point in the future.

According to the memo, Torres’ initial duties will be to “accelerate our tablet strategy and begin to execute products against our consumer/SMB target.” It sounds like HP wants to ramp up on this second shot quickly, but it has a tough road ahead. Most of us can still recall HP’s difficulties with the TouchPad after all, and it’s pretty clear that the company will be doing all it can to avoid another failure like that.

Torres has a couple weeks left to go before he begins at HP, but we’re thinking that once he’s there, HP will waste no time in putting him to work. Even though the TouchPad can’t be labeled a smashing success, it did have some redeeming features, so the idea of HP getting serious about tablet development does get us excited. Stay tuned to SlashGear for more information, as we imagine that HP will be making some announcements not long after Torres officially joins the team.

Is HP showing the Slate 8 in its latest commercial? (video)

Is HP showing the Slate 8 in its latest commercial video

HP has acknowledged that it’s been working on a Windows 8 tablet; it just hasn’t mentioned whether or not the rumored Slate 8 is part of its plans. Imagine our surprise, then, when we’re told that HP’s 60-second “Make It Matter” commercial ends with an unannounced yet familiar-looking tablet right at the 56-second mark. There’s only a fleeting glimpse, but it shows a metallic-looking body with a large black antenna window — the combination of which would fit in with the Slate 8’s purported aesthetics. We’ve asked HP whether or not this is a clever teaser for a real product or just as conceptual as the rest of the ad, and we’ll let you know if we hear back on the subject. In the meantime, you can inspect the video evidence for yourself after the break.

[Thanks, Brian]
