HP Clarifies They Are Not Dropping Windows 8

hp-windows-7Microsoft’s latest desktop operating system is Windows 8, but it seems that the platform might not be as well-received as Microsoft would like. In fact a recent ad and announcement by HP seemed to highlight that. Just last week, HP announced that they will be bringing back their Windows 7 PCs, which were apparently due to “popular demand”, suggesting that HP might not have as much faith in the Windows 8 operating system. To a certain extent it was also speculated that HP would be dropping Windows 8 in favor of the more popular Windows 7. Well the good news for those who are worried that this might be a “step back” for HP, fret not because HP has since clarified their latest move on their blog.

According to HP, “Whether you’ve been reading the tech news blogs – or just saw an ad on our hp shopping page, you’ve probably been asking yourself, “Why is HP selling Windows 7 PCs in a Windows 8 world?” The answer is dead simple: Choice. We like giving our customers the option to get the computer that’s right for them.” HP goes on to clarify that they are not, by any long shot, dropping Windows 8. “We want people to be happy with our computers – whichever option they choose – BUT WE ARE NOT DROPPING WINDOWS 8.” So there you have it folks, if you wanted a Windows 8 HP PC, you can, but at the same time for those who still prefer Windows 7, that option is available to you as well.

Qualcomm Buys Palm and IPAQ Patents

qualcomm-toq-smartwatch-01Qualcomm has just announced that it is buying the Palm and IPAQ portfolios of patents from HP which represent a combined 2400 patents, some of which have been granted, while others are still in the application process. Qualcomm did not elaborate on the motivation behind this purchase, but the language of the press release hints to an acquisition that aims at strengthening Qualcomm’s portfolio of patents, rather than aimed at producing consumer products directly related to those. Dear HP: Running From the Future Doesn’t Help Anyone

Dear HP: Running From the Future Doesn't Help Anyone

Shiny new computer, shiny new software. The two go hand in hand. Except when they don’t. It’s one thing to let tech-savvy consumers have the option for a software downgrade if they see fit, but HP’s choice to push Windows 7 on consumers by default is another entirely: it’s bad, for everyone involved. No one ever came out ahead by fighting against the future.

HP Windows 7 PCs Are Back By ‘Popular Demand’

HP Windows 7 PCs Are Back By Popular Demand

Windows 8 wasn’t adopted as enthusiastically as Windows 7. The public has different opinions about the former, some dislike the touch UI and say that it shouldn’t have been introduced for desktop PCs, where some like the new UI changes that Microsoft has made. Microsoft might have relied upon OEM partners to push its latest Windows iteration through their products, which would definitely help in increasing adoption as well as shaping public opinion about Windows 8. However, HP has sided with the majority that favors Windows 7. The manufacturer says on the front page of its website that by “popular demand,” it has decided to bring back Windows 7 PCs.

HP hasn’t just brought back computers powered by Windows 7, it is actually offering an incentive to customers who opt for these PCs. Up to $150 in savings are being offered to customers who purchased a computer with the last-generation OS instead. This move by HP isn’t that surprising to be honest, with rumors circulating that internally Microsoft employees refer to Windows 8 as “the new Vista,” this was bound to happen at some point in time. We all know how badly Vista performed in the market. Recent rumors also suggest that Microsoft might talk about Windows 9 at its BUILD conference in April, with a possible release in April 2015. The company is reportedly looking to give up on the Windows 8 brand and start afresh.
