The purchase deal that will see Microsoft acquire the hardware portion of Nokia is moving forward. Despite the deal moving forward, one of the factories that is in the deal … Continue reading
It seems that because the Indian government believes that Nokia owes them money from unpaid taxes that they didn’t exactly give their blessing to the upcoming deal between Nokia and Microsoft which would see the latter absorb the former. Nokia has since given up their factory in Chennai, India, in order for the deal to proceed, but what about the workers at the factory?
While they are expected to be given redundancy packages by Nokia, it seems that HTC might have an interest in the property after all. Speaking to the Economic Times of India, HTC’s CFO, Chialin Chang, was quoted as saying that HTC would be happy to look into the factory and might be interested in taking over it, assume that they are able to find a use for it.
“I am happy to look into it, because the overall preparation, exploration hinges upon if it will serve consumers better. If that (plant) will do that (service consumers better), then we would be happy to look further into it.” There’s no guarantee that HTC will actually go ahead and take it over but at the very least they are interested in taking a look.
Assuming that they do, it might prove to be advantageous for HTC who will then be able to use the factory to help produce some of their handsets as well, and possibly at a lower-cost too. In any case the Microsoft-Nokia deal will officially close on the 25th of April after which the cellphone division of Nokia that Microsoft bought will be renamed to Microsoft Mobile.

It does seem to be the prevailing trend these days, where smartphone companies come up with a “mini” version of their respective flagship handsets instead of calling it by a totally different device name altogether.
I would suppose that this has something to do with not having to spend that much more money to market a new product name – just shrink down the existing design somewhat, remove or dumb down some features here and there, and voila! You have got a mini version of the current smartphone.
The alleged HTC One M8 mini is touted to roll out in Europe and Asia later this May, but what about those of us living Stateside? @evleaks has shared that the “HTC One M8 mini” is indeed “going to Verizon” via Twitter.
It makes some sense, really, considering how Verizon is already selling the original HTC One M8 that has picked up its fair share of bouquets ever since it rolled out.
As for the rumored hardware specifications, the HTC One M8 mini ought to be a mid-range smartphone that has a 4.5-inch display with 720 x 1280 pixels, Android 4.4 KitKat with Sense 6.0 UI, a 13MP rear camera, a quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor at 1.7GHz, 1GB RAM, and 16GB of internal memory.

The original HTC One (M7) was more than just a decent smartphone – it was a high end flagship device that deserved its plaudits, but unfortunately, there was a perception issue with the brand that most probably limited its sales figure, registering sales of 5 million units within its first two months of availability. While that might sound impressive, relatively speaking, it fared poorly against the Samsung Galaxy S4 who outsold it by a whopping four times. We are talking about 20 million sold units within the same time window, at least according to recently published data.
Bloomberg has gotten hold of sales statistics concerning the 2013 flagships from Samsung and HTC respectively, and if you were to take Apple’s iPhone 5 in comparison, that handset did pretty well for itself too, at least better than the HTC One (M7) – selling a whopping 5 million units within the first five days of availability.
It does seem as though Samsung is king when it comes to high end Android-powered devices, which is not surprising at all considering the marketing budget of the South Korean conglomerate. Well, with the Samsung Galaxy S5 edging out the Galaxy S4 for its launch day sales figures, it would be interesting to find out some time down the road the total sales of the Galaxy S5 within the first fortnight.

HTC Could Deliver Nexus 8 (Rumor)
Posted in: Today's ChiliIt does seem that the upcoming Nexus 8 will not see Asus as the manufacturer, but rather, there are whispers going around touting that beleaguered firm HTC will be the one behind the Nexus 8. According to DigiTimes, “upstream supply chain” sources have begun to see evidence of HTC working on the Nexus 8. The Nexus 8 is widely believed to be an 8.9-inch tablet which has been bandied about before, and it also appears as though Google had plans for HTC to come up with the original Nexus 7 prior to contacting Asus, but HTC did not have the time to dedicate to such an endeavor.
Who would have thought that HTC’s share price would have plummeted so in the months since then? Perhaps that was not the brightest of choices made by the Taiwanese company. There were a couple of Nexus 7 tablets that rolled out in the summer right after the Google I/O conference, and it seems that the upcoming Nexus 8, too, will follow in such a similar direction.
In fact, the very same supply chain sources that were mentioned earlier claimed that Google is targeting a Q3 release for the Nexus 8. Are you excited at what the Nexus 8 will offer, and will it come with an Intel processor? Only time will reveal all.

Its no secret that HTC has an image problem. The company itself has accepted that it needs to do more when it comes to marketing. Despite the fact that it has created some of the most well received high-end smartphones, they haven’t been able to compete against their rivals. Earlier in the week it was rumored that HTC had hired Paul Golden, a former US chief marketing officer from Samsung. HTC has confirmed the hiring, Golden initially has a three month contract and will report directly to HTC chairperson Cher Wang.
Golden’s LinkedIn page says that he “created and launched the highly successful Galaxy brand.” He worked at Samsung from 2008 to 2012, crucial years for the company during which it rose to global dominance on the back of its strong marketing. Samsung has never been shy of taking shots at Apple in its marketing efforts.
Last year HTC tried to turn its fortunes around by bringing Robert Downey Jr. onboard for a campaign. That apparently didn’t do much. This time around, for the HTC One M8, it tapped Gary Oldman. A-listers might be good as far as star power is concerned, but the ad man that helped Samsung reach new heights would certainly be a valuable addition to HTC’s marketing team.

When it comes to cameras on a smartphone, you can more or less say that the improvements made in this department has definitely blown the mind, with the VGA quality shots of the previous decade being nothing more than a bad memory. HTC has certainly done their bit to ensure that camera technology has improved tremendously in their previous flagship smartphones, with the HTC One (M7) delivering an UltraPixel camera which has a higher focus on low-light performance compared to simply having a high megapixel count, while the HTC One (M8) has a Duo Camera setup that will boast not only of an UltraPixel shooter, but also a secondary camera that enables the user to blur either the background or foreground of a photo. What’s next down the road?
An HTC executive, Symon Whitehorn who happens to be HTC’s imaging expert, has dropped a hint on what the future major camera feature from HTC will be. Whitehorn shared, “Optical zooming in a smartphone is not too far off at all for HTC. I can’t give too much away, but within 12-18 months we’ll see huge advances in phone optics.”
