GDR3 Update For HTC 8X And 8XT Allows For Charging While Device Is Off

GDR3 Update For HTC 8X And 8XT Allows For Charging While Device Is Off

Background photos can be pulled from Facebook

Just the other day it was reported that the AT&T HTC 8X received the Windows Phone GDR3 update, along with its international variant, as well as the HTC 8XT from Sprint. While the Windows Phone GDR3 update does bring about a host of new features and improvements, here’s one that we’re not sure if Windows Phone users might have missed. It seems that with the GDR3 update, HTC 8X and HTC 8XT users will now be able to power off their devices while allowing their phone to charge. This is not a new feature as other manufacturers have allowed it, but interestingly enough this was something that was not available for HTC 8X/8XT owners prior to the update.

We’re not sure if this is a Windows Phone thing or it’s only applicable to HTC devices, but for those who would prefer to power down their device completely while letting it charge, or perhaps wanting a little peace and quiet and disconnect from the real world while their phones charge, then this update is for you. It is unclear if other Windows Phone manufacturers such as Nokia and Samsung will gain this feature too, but what do you guys think? Are you the type that prefers to completely power off their phone while it charges? Presumably with the radios off your phone should charge a little bit faster, right?

AT&T HTC 8X Users Reportedly Receiving GDR3 Update

AT&T HTC 8X Users Reportedly Receiving GDR3 UpdateThe Windows Phone GDR3 update has been slowly but surely making its way around the world and has been arriving on international versions of the HTC 8X handset. Well the good news is that if you’re an AT&T subscriber with the HTC 8X, you’re in luck because it seems that the update has begun to roll out for your device. Given that updates  usually need to be carrier-approved first before being pushed out, we guess this is pretty fast considering the international roll out begun not too long ago.

HTC 8X users will just need to check to see if they have gotten the Update 3 notification, and if you haven’t fret not because presumably the update is being pushed out in batches, so your turn should come pretty soon. The update should bump your operating system to 8.0.10501.127, so if you already have that version, you’re already running the latest update. While the update will not magically turn your HTC 8X into a Full HD, quad-core beast of a smartphone, it will come with a variety of improves and fixes, such as driving mode and custom ringtones to name a few. If you have received the update, hit us up in the comments below to let us know how it is treating you!

Vodafone Australia HTC 8X Owners Will Skip GDR2 Update In Favor Of GDR3

Vodafone Australia HTC 8X Owners Will Skip GDR2 Update In Favor Of GDR3

I love how light the phone feels

While HTC 8X owners around the world are receiving their Windows Phone 8 GDR2 update, those living in Australia under Vodafone have not received the update, and it looks like they won’t be receiving it anytime soon. This definitely sounds like bad news for Australian HTC 8X owners, but the up side is that while they will not be receiving the GDR2 update, they will instead be getting the GDR3 update. This is according to Vodafone Australia who released a statement claiming that instead of getting the GDR2 update, they will instead be upgrade straight to GDR3.

Unfortunately there is no word on when the GDR3 update will be released, so there’s no telling when Vodafone HTC 8X owners will receive it. It has been speculated that the GDR3 update will debut with the upcoming Nokia Lumia 1520 which could be unveiled at a New York event in the near future, but even then there’s no telling when Vodafone and HTC will get around to rolling it out to customers. In any case what do you guys think? Would you prefer getting updates incrementally, or would you prefer a massive update in one go?

HTC 8X On T Mobile Receiving Windows Phone GDR2 UpdateEarlier this year it was expected that the HTC 8X on T-Mobile’s network would receive the Windows Phone GDR2 update come 22nd of July. Unfortunately the update did not fully materialize and it is possible that due to some complaints of users who did receive the update about how the phone became more unstable, that T-Mobile and HTC went back to the drawing board to clear up the issues before releasing it to the masses. Well the good news is that if you have been waiting for months for the long-overdue update, you’re in luck as T-Mobile and HTC have finally released the GDR2 update.

This is according to information posted on T-Mobile’s support forum which basically confirms the latest OS update as 10327, and its Baseband as 3030.0.33501.531. The update can downloaded OTA but due to its size, it would require users to be connected to a WiFi network. So T-Mobile HTC 8X owners, how’s the latest GDR2 update treating you?

Nokia Pro Camera App Gets Ported Onto The HTC 8X

Most Windows Phone devices on the surface appear to be pretty similar in terms of their software, but what sets manufacturers apart software-wise is how they have exclusive apps that are only available for a particular manufacturer’s range of devices. Well if you’re a HTC 8X user and you would love to get your hands on the Nokia Pro Camera app, which appears to be a Nokia-exclusive for now, you can if you don’t mind fiddling around with your phone for a bit. A recent video by the folks at WindowsBlogItalia has been uploaded and basically shows off the Nokia Pro Camera app running on the HTC 8X handset.

They were even nice enough to post a tutorial if you wish to attempt something similar with your HTC 8X device. Unfortunately the instructions are posted in Italian which means that after the page has been translated, there might be something lost in translation which might be a bit risky if you’re not the type of person who fiddles around under the hood that often. In any case it’s up to you to decide if the app is worth the effort, but in the meantime you can check out the demo in the video above to get an idea of what you might be able to expect.

HTC 8X On Receiving End Of New Update, Fixes GDR2 Lag Issues

HTC 8X On Receiving End Of New Update, Fixes GDR2 Lag IssuesSometimes, being the first out of the blocks does not necessarily mean it is the best. After all, the hare did lose to the tortoise in the race, didn’t he? The HTC 8X was the first Windows Phone 8 device to pick up the GDR2 update, but it was a moment to forget since some of the HTC 8X owners actually reported that their smartphones started to lock up and end up as completely unresponsive once the update had been installed.

This particular freeze bug is said to be related to the music playing process in the handset itself. This particular process had turned some HTC 8X phones unusable whenever music is played, while other devices ended up as paperweights. For those who did not fall under this “curse” realized that the device itself became very slow, and as to how widespread these issues are, it has yet to be determined. One thing we do know is, there are folks affected in Poland and Australia, but those folks have been “set free” from the GDR2 update issues after picking up a new firmware update from HTC.

Well, we do hope that HTC will be able to roll out a similar update to other markets that carry the HTC 8X, the sooner, the better.
