HTC One M8 Mini Rumored For Verizon Release

HTC One M8 Mini Rumored For Verizon ReleaseIt does seem to be the prevailing trend these days, where smartphone companies come up with a “mini” version of their respective flagship handsets instead of calling it by a totally different device name altogether.

I would suppose that this has something to do with not having to spend that much more money to market a new product name – just shrink down the existing design somewhat, remove or dumb down some features here and there, and voila! You have got a mini version of the current smartphone.

The alleged HTC One M8 mini is touted to roll out in Europe and Asia later this May, but what about those of us living Stateside? @evleaks has shared that the “HTC One M8 mini” is indeed “going to Verizon” via Twitter.

It makes some sense, really, considering how Verizon is already selling the original HTC One M8 that has picked up its fair share of bouquets ever since it rolled out.

As for the rumored hardware specifications, the HTC One M8 mini ought to be a mid-range smartphone that has a 4.5-inch display with 720 x 1280 pixels, Android 4.4 KitKat with Sense 6.0 UI, a 13MP rear camera, a quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor at 1.7GHz, 1GB RAM, and 16GB of internal memory.

    HTC M8 Mini Specifications Rumored

    HTC M8 Mini Specifications Rumored

HTC is expected to unveil the much awaited successor to its much loved flagship smartphone, the HTC One, later this month. The HTC M8 a.k.a HTC One 2 may be showcased at the Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona, but even before its official unveiling, already there are rumors about its “mini” variant. HTC jumped on this bandwagon last year, launching the HTC One Mini, which looked similar to the flagship but had mid-level specifications. HTC M8 mini will go down the same path, resembling the upcoming flagship with relatively underpowered hardware. Its unlikely that both variants will be unveiled and put on sale at the same time. In the meantime, HTC officials are still denying the M8 existence.

HTC One Mini UK Ban Relaxed Despite Nokia’s Win

HTC One Mini UK Ban Relaxed Despite Nokias Win

Earlier this month Justice Arnold of the England and Wales High Court ordered an injunction against HTC, found to have violated Nokia’s “modular structure for a transmitter and a mobile station” patent. This resulted in a ban for the HTC One Mini which went in effect on December 6th. When the order was announced, HTC said that it would file an urgent application for appeal. The appeal has turned out in its favor, the ban on HTC One Mini in the UK has been relaxed, meaning that the company can continue to import the device in the UK despite Nokia’s win.

It was already feared that the HTC One Mini ban might lead to other members of the One family being banned, something which the company would not want to happen. HTC says that it has full intention of “aggressively” appealing the patent validity decision, but right now it is “delighted” that the Court of Appeals has granted a stay, thus relaxing the ban. It also says that it will continue working with chip suppliers on alternative solutions so as to ensure that there are minimal disruptions to its business in the future. Nokia has not commented on the Court of Appeals’ decision as yet.

HTC Exploring ‘Alternative Solutions’ After Device Ban In UK

HTC Exploring Alternative Solutions After Device Ban In UK

Earlier today we reported that Nokia scored a win in a patent lawsuit against HTC in the UK. Justice Arnold of the England and Wales High Court ordered an injunction against HTC, found to have violated Nokia’s EP0998024 patent on “modular structure for a transmitter and a mobile station.” As a result of this order, the HTC One Mini has been banned from being sold in the UK, the ban goes in effect on December 6th. HTC has responded to this development, the company says its working with its chip suppliers to “explore alternative solutions.”

The company also said that it is pleased with the court for staying an injunction against certain chipsets, including those found in the HTC One. Due to the stay, HTC’s flagship smartphone has currently not been banned from being sold in the UK. The company has filed an urgent application to appeal, so until that plays out, the validity of stay on the injunction depends upon what the outcome of HTC’s appeal is. HTC says its primary focus is to ensure “minimal disruption” to customers and its business, and it assures customers that the HTC One handset will be available in the UK as usual. With the precarious financial situation the Taiwanese manufacturer is in, it really can’t afford to have its flagship smartphone banned from a lucrative market like the UK.

    Engadget’s smartphone buyer’s guide: fall 2013

    Engadget's smartphone buyer's guide: fall 2013

As the leaves turn to gold and flutter from the trees, the Engadget team digs out their scarves and mittens to get ready for the mad rush of phone launches that take place ahead of the holiday season. We’ve seen big devices (both large and high-profile ones) enter the world over the last few months, including new heavyweights from Apple and Google. Then there’s Samsung, Nokia and HTC, which are all following the philosophy that bigger is better.

But it’s not just on the hardware side that things are getting exciting. T-Mobile’s eliminated roaming charges and Verizon is doubling its LTE speeds to a whopping 80 Mbps. AT&T is offering customers a $5 daily pass for internet and is making mobile share plans the standard rather than the exception. Of course, if you’d prefer unlimited data, Sprint is promising that its Spark LTE will beat the field — but it’s currently only available in NYC, LA, Chicago, Tampa and Miami. Whether you’re looking for a smartphone right now, or if you’re contract is about to expire, this is your guide to the best ones on the market.
