O2 and HTC to sell new smartphone without charger

How many chargers do you have lying around the house from all of the different devices you bought? Now, how many of those are you actually using? You probably have a few chargers tucked away in a drawer somewhere because you already have a couple that you’re currently using. To cut down on the amount of unused chargers circulating around the world, O2 and HTC are teaming up to release a new smartphone that won’t come with a charger in the first place.

According to O2, 70% of customers in the UK who buy a new smartphone already have the charger to go with it. This results in more than 100 million chargers going unused. O2 says that by trying to reduce the number of chargers floating around in the world, it will prevent further environmental damage by limiting the amount of components and packaging that are normally required.

While this unannounced smartphone from O2 and HTC won’t come with a charger, you’ll still be able to grab one separately if need be, but the phone itself will only come with a USB cable, for which you can use to charge your device through a USB port on your computer. But if you need to charge via a wall outlet, you’ll need to get the separate wall charger.

It makes sense really, especially for those who are loyal to one handset manufacturer. Back in my Android days, I only bought HTC, and as a result I ended up with a ton of chargers that were all the same. It was nice to have extras, but I simply had too many that would go unused, especially when I mostly just charged my devices through USB.

Remote wipe hack not limited to Samsung devices

Yesterday we talked about a huge hack that made its way to some Samsung devices, in which visiting a link that contained a line of malicious code would automatically send your phone into factory wipe mode without it being stopped. However, it looks like this hack isn’t just isolated to Samsung devices. It turns out the hack was able to be replicated on HTC, Motorola, and Sony devices as well.

Thankfully, the exploit has been patched on the Galaxy S III, but the bad news is that it’s not just limited to Samsung devices. It’s been reported that the hack is working on the HTC One X, HTC Desire, Motorola Defy, Sony Xperia Active, and the Sony Xperia Arc S.

So, what’s the problem exactly? It turns out the hack goes through the Android dialer, which supports specialized strings of characters that can do things from displaying your phone’s IMEI code to factory wiping the device. If a device is vulnerable to the hack, the dialer treats these special characters the same as a regular phone number, which can allow a website to factory wipe a phone without the user’s permission.

Luckily, a website has been put together where users can see if their Android device is vulnerable to the hack. As with any new service that can’t quite be trusted yet, use it at your own risk! And until your phone manufacturer patches the exploit, it may be a good idea to download and install an alternative dialer just to be safe.

O2 to sell upcoming HTC smartphone without a wall charger, says it’s part of a ‘simple vision’

O2 to sell upcoming HTC smartphone without a wall charger, says it's part of a 'simple vision'

In what could be considered a relatively strange move, O2 has announced that an upcoming, unannounced HTC smartphone won’t come with a wall charger inside the box. According to the Euro carrier, this idea is part of a “simple vision” in which it wants “to take chargers out of boxes full stop,” adding that research has shown more than 70 percent of UK customers don’t have the need for such charger as they already own one with the same compatibility. The soon-to-be HTC device will, however, include a USB to micro-USB cable, so not everything will be completely lost. Now O2 didn’t give any fruitful details about which HTC handset it’ll be using to kick off the program, but we’ll let you know as soon as we find out.

From the lab: Lumia 920 low-light shootout with Nokia 808, iPhone 5, HTC One X and Galaxy S III

From the lab Lumia 920 lowlight shootout with Nokia 808, iPhone 5, HTC One X and Galaxy S III video

It looks like Nokia’s controversial marketing move, which involved using pro DSLRs to “simulate” low-light shooting, was even less necessary than the smartphone maker may have thought. During our visit to the company’s Tampere, Finland research and development complex, we were given access to a comprehensive testing suite, enabling us to shoot with a Lumia 920 prototype and a handful of competing products in a controlled lighting environment. Technicians dimmed the lights and let us snap a static scene with each handset at just 5 lux — a level on par with what you may expect on a dimly lit city street in the middle of the night. The 920 took the cake, without question, but the iPhone didn’t fare too poorly itself, snatching up nearly as much light as the Nokia device. The 808 PureView also performed quite well, but the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III yielded unusable results.

It’s one thing to snag proper exposure, though — capturing sharp details with little noise and superior color balance is an entirely different beast, and the Lumia managed to do just that, as you’ll see in our 100-percent-view shots further on. Later in the evening we hit the streets of Helsinki for a real-world shootout. The 920 did present some issues with exaggerated shake and other rapid movements, but it offered up excellent results overall, even in scenes that were too dark for us to make out any details with our own eyes. Our nighttime shoot can be found in the gallery below, followed by plenty of comparison photos after the break.

Amazon dates HTC Windows Phone 8X

If you are definitely more than impressed with what the HTC Windows Phone 8X is able to offer after the device’s announcement last week, then you would be pleased to hear of a possible release date. This does not come from the official HTC source, but rather, it seems that Amazon UK intends to draw attention unto itself with a SIM-free variant of the model being made available for pre-order. Not only that, they do speculate on an expected shipping date that is happening this coming November 8th, although you would need to fork out a rather hefty £531.43 for this puppy – which when translated, would mean $863.

This comes after we reported on how T-Mobile’s HTC Windows Phone 8X signup page has gone live, so it seems that regardless of which side of the pond you reside on, the HTC Windows Phone 8X looks set to arrive in the hands of eager beavers – and soon. At least, in time for the mad holiday season, where this coming Christmas, everyone with different mobile operating systems are able to sit near the hearth and regale one another with tales of whose smartphone is better.

T-Mobile is whetting our appetites for HTC’s ridiculously named yet highly attractive Windows Phone 8X with a sign-up sheet on its website. The manufacturer confirmed that it’s aiming for a November launch for the (surprise, surprise) Windows Phone 8 handset, and we’ve also heard whispers that it’ll retail for $199 when it arrives. If those two factoids haven’t gotten you excited enough, you can always see how it compares to its rivals in our comparison feature.

Nokia reportedly looking to sue HTC over their Windows Phone 8 handset designs

Yesterday we reported that despite HTC’s recently announced Windows Phone 8X and 8S handsets looking remarkably like Nokia’s Lumia series of smartphones, the Finnish company had released a rather diplomatic statement saying that HTC’s efforts was “good news” for the Windows Phone ecosystem. We admitted it was rather gracious of them and if you were wondering when the other shoe was going to drop, here it is. According to reports, it seems that Nokia is looking to sue HTC over their new Windows Phone 8 handsets, particularly that of the 8X which we can’t help but agree upon first glance could be mistaken for Nokia’s Lumia 820.

The report has stated that Nokia is currently preparing their case against HTC and they are looking at the possibility of getting the HTC 8X banned in certain regions. It should be noted that there has not been any official statement from either company yet and Nokia’s recently released statement had us thinking otherwise, so we suggest you take this with a grain of salt for now but do check back with us at a later date where hopefully more (official) information will be available. In the meantime what do you guys think? Do you think Nokia has a strong case here?

T-Mobile’s HTC Windows Phone 8X signup page goes live

It was just last week that HTC officially announced their Windows Phone 8X and Windows Phone 8S devices, but unfortunately much like Nokia’s announcement of their Windows Phone 8 range of Lumia handsets, an official release date is still in the wind. This is probably due to both companies waiting for Microsoft to officially release Windows Phone 8 before putting their products up for sale, and if HTC’s offerings have tempted you more than Nokia’s, T-Mobile has since launched a signup page on their website where you can drop your email so that the carrier will inform you when the HTC Windows Phone 8X goes on sale. We already knew that the 8X would be launched on T-Mobile, but we were just waiting on a release date. Hopefully this signup page is an indication that an official launch isn’t too far behind. Anyone planning on picking one of these up when it’s available?

HTC Titan receives Windows Phone 7.8 port

About a week ago, we reported that the HTC HD7 had received a beta Windows Phone 7.8 ROM. Well the good news is that if you own the HTC Titan, it seems that there is a Windows Phone 7.8 port available for you to download as well. Of course this is not the official release that Microsoft/HTC will be releasing, but for HTC Titan owners who are feeling slightly miffed over the fact that their phones will not be updated to Windows Phone 8, perhaps this 7.8 port might be able to tide you over until the official release, or when you decide to get a new phone. So if you still have your HTC Titan with you and wouldn’t mind giving this ROM a spin, you can find the download along with additional details on the XDA forums. So, any HTC Titan owners planning to give this a try, or are you planning to wait for the official release?

5-inch Google Nexus smartphone by HTC on its way [Rumor]

Google released its Nexus 7 tablet, in collaboration with Asus, earlier this year. But that is just the start of a whole crop of new Nexus devices that may hit the market during 2012. Google is said to be gearing up to release five new Nexus devices before the turn of the year.

According to rumors, one of HTC’s 5-inch smartphones may be a part of the Nexus line-up. To be specific, HTC’s DROID Incredible X smartphone, which is still a rumored device, will be one of the alleged five new Nexus devices. (more…)
