HTC Moves To Tweak The HTC One Ahead Of Possible U.S. Import Ban

htc-one-review02

Things could get even worse for HTC if the battered smartphone maker doesn’t move quickly. The WSJ is reporting that following a preliminary U.S. court win by Nokia, HTC is facing a possible import ban in its major overseas markets including the U.S. The ruling covers older HTC phones, but apparently the hot HTC One and other new devices also utilize the same radio technology covered in the lawsuit.

The WSJ is reporting that HTC is now working with Qualcomm to alter components to prevent another possible lawsuit. HTC is in rough shape as it is. Another lawsuit, or worse, an import ban, would douse the smartphone maker with more water as it tries to bail its already-sinking ship.

HTC is expected to report its first quarterly loss since its 2002 initial public offering. HTC is desperate, recently unloading its equity in Beats Electronics to try to shore up the smartphone maker’s cash balances. Once a top player in Android, HTC’s marketshare is shrinking, leading it to look at alternative markets including building a mobile OS for the Chinese market.

Nokia spokesman Mark Durrant told the Journal that even though the Nokia lawsuit started in 2012, before the HTC One hit the market, Nokia believes the One also violates its patents and would be included under any potential International Trade Commission ban.

HTC apparently has time before the final ruling in January 2014 to convince the ITC to reverse this ruling or present a workaround. It’s unclear at this time what HTC’s course of action might be, but this just adds to the company’s already overloaded pack animal. It likely won’t take much more to break its proverbial back.

HTC One chipset goes under the knife to avoid import ban

HTC has been fighting to help improve its sales in the smartphone market. The company has seen profits shrink along with its market share and it is now forced to work with QUALCOMM on redesigning a chip inside of its flagship HTC One to avoid an import ban. The redesign comes after smartphone rival Nokia […]

HTC must alter chip in One smartphone in order to avoid Nokia patents

Poor HTC. As if it didn’t already have enough to deal with, the troubled manufacturer now has to meddle with the original design of the One and other smartphones in order to avoid infringing on a couple of Nokia patents. According to the Wall Street Journal, HTC is currently working with Qualcomm to find a different method of improving reception and transmission within its radio components, following a successful patent suit by Nokia in the US a week ago. If these tweaks don’t happen, and if the ITC upholds Nokia’s victory when it considers the matter in January, a number of models could potentially be subject to import bans. This has happened before, however, when HTC unwittingly infringed on a Nokia microphone patent and quickly managed to find a workaround, so by now it has become adept at this sort of fire-fighting and says it already has a plan to avoid “business disruption.”

Galaxy Note 3 not the only one free of “benchmark shenanigans” accusations

As the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 appears on US-shores we’ve seen talk of not quite on-the-level benchmark boosting by the likes of what, at first, would seem to be the manufacturer of the smartphone. This report originates with Ars Technica where they suggest that the smoking gun is the fact that this smartphone brings up […]

FreedomPop intros a free plan: includes 200 voice minutes, 500 texts and 500MB of data per month

It’s no longer a summertime tease: FreedomPop’s freemium mobile phone service is now officially a go. Launched in beta today, the operator’s basic plan offers consumers a voice/text/data bundle that nets them 200 anytime minutes, 500 texts and 500MBs for the price of, well, nothing per month — and it’s contract-free, too. There’s also a more robust unlimited voice and text package for chattier users that runs about $11/mo. Keep in mind, FreedomPop’s network piggybacks on Sprint 3G, WiMAX and LTE, so coverage, reception and call quality (it’s VoIP) will be vary depending on your location and any data overages will cost you $0.01/MB and $10/GB.

It’s not all free champagne and strawberries, though — there is an actual price of entry, and it comes in the form of HTC’s EVO Design, offered at a very reasonable $99. Users accustomed to more device choice will have to hold out until later this year, as FreedomPop does plan to add other Android devices to its lineup. For now, though, it’s extremely slim pickings. But can you really look a gift horse in the mouth? We didn’t think so, freeloaders.

Purported HTC Butterfly 2 Front Panel Leaked

There’s mounting speculation that HTC has yet another Butterfly smartphone up its sleeve. HTC’s Butterfly branded devices aren’t that popular in markets other than Asia. The first device from this lineup to come to the U.S. was actually called the Droid DNA on Verizon. Recently, there have been a lot of rumors about the HTC Butterfly 2. It is expected to be released in January 2014 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor under the hood and a full 1080p HD 5.2 inch display. The purported front panel of HTC Butterfly 2 has now been leaked.

Rumor has it that the HTC Butterfly 2 will be available in white, blue and black colors. Report accompanying these leaked images reiterates the possibility of this device having a Snapdragon 800 processor and a full HD 5.2 inch display. The Butterfly 2 is also said to be completely waterproof. BoomSound speakers on the front and an Ultrapixel rear camera has also been rumored. As per the report, this device might be announced in January, around the time of the Chinese New Year. HTC Butterfly 2 allegedly leaked, takes design cue from 8XT

    HTC Butterfly 2 allegedly leaked

Just when we thought Chinese tech news has died down ahead of China’s National Day on October 1st, a seemingly reliable HTC leak from there just had to ruin the fun. According to Weiphone, these are apparently the screens of the Butterfly 2, a new flagship device that’s been rumored to carry a larger 5.2-inch 1080p display, a quad-core Snapdragon 800 SoC, an UltraPixel camera and BoomSound front-facing stereo speakers. Like the Windows Phone-powered 8XT, this alleged Butterfly 2 disguises its bottom speaker as a short black bar in between the Android soft keys, and it also utilizes a similar two-tone color scheme — for its front side, at least. ePrice reported earlier that the new phone could be waterproof-certified at IPX7 or above, but we won’t find out until January 2014 the earliest. One more shot after the break.

HTC One Max Launch Rumored To Be On October 17th

HTC One Max Launch Rumored To Be On October 17th

Rumors about the new HTC phablet have been going around for quite some time now. In fact, it was initially believed that HTC might unveil the device at the IFA trade show in Berlin, but it didn’t do so. Hype surrounding the device has diminished a bit since then, it was aided by chatter that perhaps the new phablet might not come with the quadcore Snapdragon 800 processor as many had hoped. There’s no word as yet from HTC regarding the launch of One Max, but there have been a few rumors about its release date. The latest one suggests that the phablet may arrive on October 17th.

It is believed that HTC will make the One Max announcement on October 17th, the company itself hasn’t confirmed it as yet. As per the rumor, the phablet will come with a price tag of 23,900 NTD in Taiwan, which in U.S. dollar terms is around $810. Though this can’t be taken as a measure of what the One Max will cost in the U.S. Furthermore, it is not known right now exactly when this device will be released outside Taiwan, particularly in the North American and European markets. The One Max is expected to tout a 5.9 inch full 1080p HD display, a fingerprint sensor, 2GB RAM and 32GB of onboard storage.
