Huawei Not Interested In Acquiring A Phone Maker

Huawei Not Interested In Acquiring A Phone Maker

Microsoft announced earlier this week that it has acquired Nokia’s phone business. This lead many analysts to speculate about the future of struggling phone manufacturers such as BlackBerry and HTC. BlackBerry has already formed a special committee to look into a possible sale of the company, though it is believed that there hasn’t been any interest in a whole acquisition of the company as yet. It was rumored earlier today that BlackBerry wants to close its sale by November. As far as HTC is concerned, the company recently rubbished rumors that it was being put up for sale. Even if both companies become available for sale, China’s Huawei won’t be going for them, this according to Huawei’s senior vice president and board member Chen Lifang.

Back in June, Huawei’s Richard Yu was quoted as saying that they were considering acquiring Nokia. Huawei downplayed the report the next day, saying that it wasn’t interested. It appears that the Chinese manufacturer doesn’t want to take on a struggling company. Chen Lifang told reporters in London that “we want to rely on ourselves,” and that they haven’t considered an acquisition. Huawei isn’t exactly known for its smartphones in the West, but it one of the major players in the highly lucrative and massive Chinese market.

Limited Edition HTC One Mini That Sports David Koma Designs Spotted In The UK

Limited Edition HTC One Mini That Sports David Koma Designs Spotted In The UKIt does seem that HTC has announced something new for their HTC One Mini – a limited edition of the smartphone, and this unveiling occurred in the UK. The limited edition HTC One Mini is said to feature some “unique artwork” from British designer David Koma, where the whole idea of this limited edition device is to celebrate “the concept of change through both reflecting his previous collection and giving a sneak preview of his forthcoming show at London Fashion Week.”

In fact, it is so limited in quantity that there will only be 10 of such HTC One Mini David Koma units produced, so you know which proverb would apply this time around – the early bird gets the worm. As a worm, it pays to be late, but who wants to crawl on their belly all day long when you can soar high up in the sky, symbolizing success? In fact, all 10 limited edition HTC One Mini units are unavailable for purchase, but will be given away on Twitter instead by HTC UK from today until September 23rd. To take part in this competition, you must make use of the hashtag #htckoma, followed by submitting your own design “inspired by David’s work, using any medium or material to reflect your own take on the idea of change.” For those who will be taking part, good luck!

HTC Still “Assessing The Situation” After Microsoft-Nokia Deal Was Announced

HTC Still Assessing The Situation After Microsoft Nokia Deal Was AnnouncedIt was just the other day that Microsoft announced that they would be acquiring Nokia’s cellphone business. Of course since Nokia is hardly the only company that manufactures Windows Phone devices (there’s HTC, Samsung, Huawei, just to name a few), we’re sure some are wondering what these companies have to say about the deal. When reached out for a comment by AllThingsD, Samsung did not have anything to say, but HTC replied with a, “We are assessing the situation and have no comment at this time.”

Interestingly it had been rumored that HTC was considering a HTC One version with Windows Phone 8 on board, although another rumor had suggested that HTC would be moving away from the Windows Phone platform, although we’re not sure if it was because HTC had caught wind of the possible acquisition, or if the company just wanted to concentrate on the Android operating system. In any case Microsoft has since stated that the Windows Phone operating system would continue to be licensed out to other manufacturers, although with Microsoft now having the ability to manufacture their own smartphones and having access to Nokia’s patents as well, we’re not sure if other manufacturers will have much motivation.

HTC’s ex-lead designer may have leaked info to China’s Chengdu government

HTC's exlead designer is a jerk

The latest development on the recent HTC saga reveals that Thomas Chien, the arrested ex-VP of Product Design, was possibly lured by the Chengdu municipal government to set up a phone company in China. According to Taiwan’s Next Magazine (pictured above by sister publication Apple Daily), Chien flew to Chengdu several times in the first half of this year, which got HTC suspicious since it doesn’t have any direct business there.

The alleged offer was that if Chien left HTC with some of the technology plus some money, then the municipal government would — through another company it set up — take care of the remaining costs for opening the factory, production and marketing. Previous reports say while still at HTC, the ex-exec had e-mailed some confidential Sense 6.0 files to external contacts, but there’s no confirmation on whether those people are linked to the Chengdu government.

HTC announces the Desire 601, we go hands-on (video)

HTC launches the Desire 600, we go handson video

It’s a weird time at HTC, where its flagship smartphones earn so much praise, but the bottom line continues to evaporate at an alarming rate. It’s the mid-range and low-end that the company now needs to improve in the hope of recouping some of Robert Downey Jr.’s fee. That’s what the Desire 601 is for, a second-tier smartphone that shares more than a little of its DNA with the company’s highly-lauded flagships. We got to spend a couple of minutes with the device, the first Desire handset to ship with LTE, and we’d like to share with you our very first impressions.

HTC One and One Mini ‘vivid blue’ hands-on (updated)

HTC One and One Mini vivid blue handson

HTC’s designers may soon be more famous for their expense accounts than their designs, but that shouldn’t detract from their latest color-picking masterpiece. We’ve been playing with the vivid blue HTC One and One Mini and have to admit, it’s a tough choice deciding between this and the glamour red version we saw in July. While we were there, we also asked if the company would be introducing a Mini version of the One in red, but that’s not yet confirmed. HTC is looking to hawk this as a carrier or retailer exclusive in various territories, with the official line being that it’ll land in “select markets” from Q4 — but we’re reasonably sure that Sprint’s got this one locked up for September. Keen-eyed readers will notice in the gallery below that the highlight colors are darker on the One than on the Mini, but that’s the only difference between this and the original vintage.

Update: While there’s nothing official to emerge from the US just yet, we do have official confirmation that both the HTC One and One Mini in “vivid blue” will be sold through the Carphone Warehouse in the UK. The flagship can be had on plans starting at £33, while the smaller model is available from £26 a month.
