Keepin’ it real fake: HTC One gets a convincing plastic clone (video)

Keepin' it real fake HTC One finally gets a convincing plastic clone

We hate to say this, but the KIRF market is often a good indicator of how popular certain devices are, hence the plentiful fake iPhones and Galaxy phones in China. (Meanwhile, MediaTek is shamelessly cashing in as it ships its SoCs to those cloning factories.) Now, we’re not saying the HTC One doesn’t have any clones, but most of those we’ve seen weren’t very convincing — they were either of different sizes or had very poor build quality. But we eventually stumbled upon a pretty good fake in Huaqiangbei.

The offending device is pictured above on the left. Externally, it bears a disgustingly strong resemblance to the real deal thanks to the same 4.7-inch screen size, the same curved back, the same micro-SIM tray, the same dual-soft-key layout and even the same metallic chamfer on the front. But if you look closer or touch it even, the tell-tale signs start to show up. See for yourself in the gallery below — the fake One is to the left or on top of the real thing.

Dual-SIM HTC Butterfly S certified for China, comes with removable back cover

HTC Butterfly S Dual 9060 certified for China

It’s a given that HTC will eventually launch its new Butterfly S in China, but will it be a dual-SIM version like the One Dual variants offered over there? The answer is yes, according to a filing in TENAA’s database. This particular “9060” device comes with WCDMA radio, meaning it’ll be picked up by China Unicom but will also work in many parts of the world.

According to a source of ours, the entire back cover (black or white; with NFC antenna) is removable to give access to the two micro-SIM card slots, as well as a microSD slot as featured on the One Dual. The trade-off, however, is the increased 10.89mm thickness from the original 10.6mm. That said, the listed 158g weight is a little below the original 160g, so we’re not sure if the battery capacity is still at 3,200mAh.

The rest of the phone should otherwise be identical to its single-SIM sibling: 1.9GHz quad-core processor (so should be the same Snapdragon 600 SoC), 5-inch 1080p LCD, UltraPixel main camera, BoomSound stereo speakers and Android 4.2.2. As always, we shall keep an eye out for a price and date.

HTC Butterfly S dual-SIM edition appears: One Up!

It’s time to have a peek at the HTC Butterfly S once again, this time seeing how this DROID DNA-sized smartphone works with all the features of the HTC One along with not just one, but two SIM cards at once. There’s a bit of a “must have” feature out there for much of the world outside the USA, and that is the aforementioned ability to work with more than on SIM card at once, holding both of these micro-SIM-sized cards under the hood at once as well. This device is also appearing this week for the first time in black.

htcbigup

Where the first reveal of the HTC Butterfly S we saw white, red, and silver, with black expected to appear – again, eventually – with Verizon in the USA. The DROID DNA is the USA-bound version of the HTC Butterfly J, a device revealed several months before the HTC One, inside 2012 in that case. It was only a matter of time before black and red leaked (via LeaksChina) before the final drop.

Here with the Butterfly S, the consumer gets a 5-inch, 1080p Super LCD 3 display running alongside a healthy collection of HTC One-borne features. You’ve got a 4 UltraPixel camera on th back of this machine, 2 megapixel camera up front, and an HTC ImageChip 2 processor under the hood for added photo processing excellence. Under the hood you’ve got a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor, just as the HTC One works with, this time clocked at 1.9 GHz.

htc_butterfly_s_4-copy

Also inside is 2GB of RAM, Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, and the newest form of HTC’s own Sense user interface. This machine rings in at 144.5×70.5×10.89 mm in size, the same as the HTC Butterfly S without the ability to roll with more than on SIM card.

You’ll have to wait for the final machine to hit the market at least a few more weeks, as HTC hasn’t actually made this iteration of the Butterfly S public quite yet, and it’ll be more than just a few months before it gets to the USA. It’s far more likely that the USA will get a version of the Butterfly S without dual-SIM abilities than with, and as the HTC One is only just getting to carriers like Verizon here in the summer of 2013.

MoDaCo.Switch to let HTC One jump between Sense and stock Android (video)

MoDaCo Switch to let HTC One owners pick Sense or Google Play UI at will video

Not sure if you want the regular HTC One or its Google Play Edition? MoDaCo‘s newly detailed MoDaCo.Switch ROM should let you have both. The custom firmware lets the indecisive run either the Sense interface or stock Android (AOSP) using only one set of data. It’s not an ideal experience, even considering the usual risks of unofficial code: users have to reboot to change interfaces, and two ROMs in one will chew up additional storage. However, Switch could still give One fans the best of both worlds when it launches. MoDaCo tells us that a public beta could arrive early next week.

Verizon HTC One hits August 1st: too late?

It’s just a few weeks away: the Verizon HTC One, the smartphone introduced in February and out on carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile in the months that came soon after. Now the Verizon version of the device is headed to market and it would appear – not confirmed 100%, but just as well – that the HTC One will be appearing on big red on the first of August. Will it have been worth the wait, or will it be too late to care?

verizonhtcone

This device will still come with a 4.7-inch display with the highest pixels-per-inch resolution on the market at 441. That’s 1080p across the slightly-smaller-than-Samsung Galaxy S 4‘s display which rings in at 5-inches. With the same amount of pixels in a smaller area, the HTC One will beat the Galaxy S 4 even though the Samsung device has ben with the carrier for weeks. And the two are doing battle in their Google Play editions, as well.

P7050521-slashgear-GS4-One-580x326

So you’ve got the HTC One with its UltraPixel camera on its back, its also-impressive 2 megapixel camera on its front, and Verizon under the hood. You’ve got the full HTC Sense experience here as you’ve seen with the original HTC One as well as the HTC One AT&T edition. The AT&T version will give you a bit better an idea of what’s in store for carrier-added apps, too, red instead of blue.

side-580x251

Verizon did not hesitate on this release. Thought it may seem like they only decided to carry the HTC One once the first reviews were in, the DROID DNA still sits with the carrier having nearly run its full life with Verizon per the carrier’s preference in keeping a certain amount of months between releases of a device with the same manufacturer. This means that if Samsung released a Samsung Galaxy S4 “Slightly Better Edition” this week, Verizon still wouldn’t carry the phone until the first Galaxy S 4 had run its course.

While it’s not the same case for the Samsung Galaxy S 4 and the Samsung Galaxy Note III, you’ll find the number of months between the release of the last Samsung Galaxy Note and this year’s edition to be more than abundant. The Galaxy Note III and the Galaxy S 4 also have a key differentiator that the HTC One and the DROID DNA do not: a digital stylus by the name of S-Pen.

So here we are, more than five months since HTC announced the HTC One, and Verizon will carry the device with its own brand of 4G LTE. Will you pick it up? Or have you moved on?

Moto X and HTC One get August street dates on Verizon in leaked roadmap

DNP Moto Droid X and HTC Hero street dates possibly leaked via Verizon road map

Verizon’s flagship Moto X will release on August 23rd, according to a leaked road map obtained by PhoneArena. The site also notes that Motorola’s first handset built in the US gives users who order online the choice of separate colors for the back cover and trim and can also be engraved a la iPods and Zune HDs of yore; brick and mortar retail models will be standard black. The document also lists an August 1st release date for the HTC One, a phone we still have a soft spot for. We’ve reached out to the Big Red carrier for confirmation and will update this post accordingly should we hear back.

Verizon roadmap leaks Moto X and HTC One release dates

Those looking to get a better handle on how long they’ll have to wait before their beloved Motorola Moto X and/or HTC One will be waiting to hit Verizon will be able to rejoice today. A roadmap tipping the release dates of devices through the end of August has been leaked, here showing not just the Verizon HTC One, not just the Motorola Moto X, but machines from Samsung and LG as well.

HTC-One-Red-three-view-580x422

The roadmap sets the stage for the HTC One to hit on the first of August, putting it at three weeks away – to the day – from today. That’s also well within the bounds of several other key releases from other companies aiming to eat the HTC One’s camera domination lunch, namely the Nokia Lumia 1020 with its 41-megapixel sensor. Will 10x the megapixels make up the difference?

Verizon also has the “Motorola X”, aka Moto X set for the 23rd of August. At that point we’re still calling it a far-off sort of drop, but with the machine having leaked essentially in full several times over already, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Motorola reveal the device well before then, with pre-orders starting closer to the beginning of the month. For more information on the Moto X, head down the rabbit hole with SlashGear’s Moto X tag portal.

This leaked roadmap comes from PhoneArena, mind you, and it points to several other odd devices as well. There’s an LG Exalt, a basic flip phone with “largest display available” on said sort of device with “crystal-clear sound quality” to boot. You’ve got NFL Mobile 2013 launching the same day as the HTC One, this version likely to have additional abilities and streaming boosts.

vzmap

There’s a Samsung Convoy 3 set to replace the Convoy 2 on the 15th of August, a prepaid phone addition in the Samsung Stellar, and boosts to “Verizon FamilyBase”. This is an update to the current Verizon Usage Controls with added functionality and bits and pieces like family based pricing. Exciting stuff!

HTC M8 To Be 2014 HTC Flagship

HTC One 2 “M8″ expected as 2014 flagship smartphone

This week it’s becoming clear that the company that set its sights on a single machine to turn around fortunes through the 2013 smartphone season will be bringing an HTC One reboot by the end of the year. It’s not a solid announcement, of course, and HTC isn’t saying so officially quite yet, but in addition to a reboot of the One that’s lead the way through the past bunch of months, the company is being tipped to bring an HTC M8 to the public in 2014.

htcbigup

The original HTC One works with code-name HTC M7, making the M8 a next-generation release. With the HTC One on its own, the company is being suggested as bringing a new generation with incremental updates to hardware and software while the M8 will hold all the biggest tricks. A source speaking with Pocket Lint on the matter has given a rather cryptic “plans could be changed” on said two-tiered release.

The HTC M8 is suggested to be bringing on a next-generation processor and a display somewhere in-between the HTC One and the DROID DNA (aka the Butterfly J). You’ll also find the Butterfly S to be a good indicator of the updates that’ll be made to the HTC One, it bringing on a slightly more impressive display along with HTC One-centric hardware improvements like forward-facing BoomSound speakers.

Butterfly_S_2100_x_1659_White_MusicPlayer-580x331

The HTC One Mini also lurks in the shadows, that being a smaller version of the HTC One with similar specifications aimed at hands with a slightly smaller grip than the massive beasts that are the HTC One and DROID DNA. This release will likely come during or soon after the release of the Verizon version of the HTC One.

verizon_htc_one

The HTC One carried by Verizon has indeed been confirmed by Verizon, finally, and will likely be brought to the market by the end of next month. This is indicated by FCC listings appearing earlier this week.
