Nokia Lumia EOS And Catwalk Release Rumored Between May And August

Nokia Lumia EOS And Catwalk Release Rumored Between May And August

More rumors regarding Nokia Lumia EOS smartphone started coming in last month, it is believed that the Finnish manufacturer’s next flagship smartphone will have a 41 megapixel camera. It was reported back then that Nokia was testing two versions of the EOS, one with a quadcore and one with a dualcore processor. The EOS is said to be an AT&T exclusive for 1-3 months before being released globally. The ‘Catwalk’ Lumia smartphone was reportedly shown to a select few at an inviting only briefing at MWC 2013. This is device is said to be the successor of Lumia 920 with same internal specs but a thinner and lighter profile. Leaked images of Nokia Lumia Catwalk suggest that it will be fashioned out of aluminium. It was also rumored that Nokia will release Catwalk on 15th May.

An unverified source claims that the months of May and August will be exciting for Windows Phone fans as a number of manufacturers will be releasing new device. The Nokia EOS and Catwalk will apparently be released in these months, they would reportedly not have built-in wireless charging though covers will be available for this purpose. Also rumored to release are two versions of HTC Tiara, the Samsung Cronus LTE and Huawei’s Ascend WQ 5. Since this source isn’t known for its authenticity, it is advised that you remain skeptical about this release time frame.

HTC One Specs Sheet Drops HDR Microphone

HTC One Specs Sheet Drops HDR MicrophoneWell, well, what do we have here? It seems that HTC has taken the necessary steps to ensure that the HDR microphone which has brought unnecessary spotlight (in a negative way) to the company is no longer there to cause any more trouble, as the Taiwanese company has done away with the HDR microphone from the HTC One’s specs sheet, promotional pages as well as official local websites. This happened as part of the fallout of a legal battle between Nokia and the microphone’s supplier, ST Microelectronics, where the latter was meant to produce said microphone just for select Nokia smartphones on an exclusive basis.

Since then, we have reliable information that HTC is working on a microphone of its own, and there will no longer be any more HDR microphone branding used in the smartphone’s marketing materials. Needless to say, current HTC One models remain safe from any potential legal action, as HTC will continue to use STM HDR microphones in their HTC One models until current supplies run out. That means our 32GB HTC One giveaway would feature this microphone from ST Microelectroncs.

HTC looks to boost One sales with new weekend promo, offers $100 to $375 for trade-ins

HTC has already gone the trade-in route to offer folks a discount on its new One smartphone, but it’s now giving it another go this weekend with an expanded promo in the US and Canada. This new one is open to anyone that buys an HTC One between today and Sunday, May 5th (the previous promotion required folks to pre-register), and it now offers up to $375 for smartphones that you trade in. Unless you’re looking to unload your brand new smartphone in a hurry, though, you may want to check around for the going rates first. The slightly better option is for folks who’ve been sticking with an aging phone; as before, HTC is guaranteeing at least $100 for your trade-in, so you may well get more from it than you would on the open market (assuming you want to buy a One, of course). Those interested can find all the fine print and check the value of their phone at the source link below.

Owning A HTC One Gets EasierSo, you have been on the lookout for the HTC One for quite some time already, but somehow did not manage to pick one up for yourself for a reason that only you know. From today onwards until the end of this weekend, customers who pick up a new HTC One and trade in a qualified smartphone are able to be on the receiving end of at least $100, and depending on the smartphone model that you decided to drop off for a trade-in, as much as $375 for your previous device. HTC One HDR microphone disappears from spec sheet after Nokia injunction (updated)

HTC One HDR Mic dropped from spec sheet after Nokia case

We’ve wondered what HTC would do after a Dutch court banned it from using HDR Microphones in its oft-delayed One handset, and now we know. It looks like the company has now nixed references to the Nokia-developed component on its website, raising the possibility that the handsets currently being manufactured have HTC’s “improved” microphones rather than the original STMicroelectronics unit on board. None of this should affect phones that are already on the market, but we’ve reached out to HTC to find out what this means for future One owners and will let you know more when we do.

[Thanks, Ted]

Update: HTC has reiterated its position (after the break) saying that the company is entitled to use its remaining supplies of STM’s HDR Microphones until they run out.

HTC pins hopes on Q2 after dire opening quarter

HTC has released its Q1 2013 financial results, and as the unaudited figures in April previewed, things didn’t go so well for the One-maker, with quarterly profit slumping dramatically year-on-year. Nonetheless, despite revenues down to just NT$42.8bn ($1.45bn), HTC is adamant that a turnaround is imminent, pegging the HTC One as the company’s savior.

AT&T HTC One

“This was a pivotal quarter for HTC” CEO Peter Chou said of the opening period of 2013. The company had hoped to have the One on sale in as many as 80 countries before the end of March, but component and manufacturing issues meant that customers in only a handful of locations could actually pick up the new phone.

The result is dire revenues, with HTC seeing just NT$8.7bn ($290m) in gross profit, and operating profit diving from NT$5.1bn a year ago to a meager NT$0.04bn ($13.5m) in Q1 2013. That was slightly offset by HTC shaving away at its sales marketing spend, more than halving the amount it spent compared to the previous quarter.

Nonetheless, despite the poor showing, HTC is confident of a turnaround in Q2 2013, now that buyers in more locations can find the One in stores. Revenue for the quarter is expected to be around NT$70bn ($2.4bn), an increase of almost a billion US dollars.

Whether it can achieve that will depend in no small part on how well it can market the One in the face of the coming Samsung Galaxy S 4 onslaught. HTC’s phone does have some advantages, such as its UltraPixel camera giving better low-light performance, but the strength of Samsung’s promotional budget has already been demonstrated in the case of the Galaxy S III. Our review of the HTC One is here, and the phone launched on multiple networks in the UK in mid-April.

HTC expects revenues to jump 636 percent in Q2 2013, will continue to support Windows Phone

HTC’s financial results released today don’t contain much good news — take a quick look at the unaudited figures we reported last month. But despite its worst ever quarterly profit earlier this year, it’s banking on a substantial turnaround over the next few months. During an earnings call today referencing its audited results, HTC said that its outlook for Q2 2013 includes a revenue jump to around $2.4 billion — a huge increase from $1.45 billion registered in Q1. HTC CEO Peter Chou said that the company was fine “in terms of cash flow,” and that it would continue to support both Android and Windows Phone hardware in the near future. How about those recent supply woes? “We are working as hard as possible to meet the demand everywhere.” The company, however, wasn’t giving away any handset sales figures, something that the competition does enjoy flourishing.

When asked whether he was concerned with its recent hardware being copied, Chou was frank: ” In this industry, everything can be copied. I think there’s no point [in] thinking you can prevent this… but whether they would get this original quality — I think the most important [thing] is that you are first.”

Watch How HTC One Is Fashioned Out Of Pure Metal

We concluded in our HTC One review that is is a very good smartphone. It doesn’t disappoint on the performance side and it happens to be an amazing mobile entertainment device that offers good battery life. Its design makes it one of the most beautiful smartphones available in the market today. The material out of which it is fashioned makes for a very sleek back and an impressive build quality. When compared to the company’s previous flagships that were made from matte plastic, HTC One is miles ahead of the pack.

HTC has posted a video on YouTube detailing the design story of HTC One. Sure, its has marketing pitches, but it is certainly interesting to get a glimpse of how the company makes HTC One. This video includes footage from the manufacturing process as well as interviews from the people directly related to the design side of things for HTC’s latest flagship smartphone. What do you think about the HTC One? Do you believe that its design gives it an advantage against its main rival in the market, Samsung’s Galaxy S4?

HTC Watch Shuts Down In Half Dozen EU Countries

HTC Watch Shuts Down In Half Dozen EU CountriesThe HTC Watch service was first launched in May 2011, where it rolled out alongside the HTC Sensation 4G smartphone. Those were good times for the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer, who has since fallen on rather difficult times. The HTC Watch service delivers different kinds of Hollywood movies for rent and download, and for a while it did seem as though the HTC Watch service was not popular enough, hence leading HTC to limit its availability.

Having said that, HTC has confirmed that they will no longer support the HTC Watch in half a dozen countries throughout the European Union from May 15th onwards, and those “lucky half dozen” would include Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Sweden. As for subscribers of HTC Watch from the mentioned countries, fret not, you can still download your existing purchases, as the final shutdown will happen on May 31st. HTC mentioned in a press release, “As we continue to deliver new content for HTC Watch, we’ve made the decision to focus our efforts on markets with the highest engagement.” Will there be other countries affected in a future cull, if any?
