Former Nokia head of sales takes his expertise to Huawei (updated)

Former Nokia head of sales takes his expertise to Huawei updated

The last time we caught up with news of Colin Giles was a year ago, right after some particularly downbeat Nokia financials, when he left the Finnish manufacturer to spend more time with his family. Now, having clocked up sufficient mileage in his station wagon, he’s accepted a major role at Huawei as an executive VP responsible for consumer sales and marketing. He brings with him 20 years’ experience of growing Nokia’s market share in Asia and beyond, including a 12-month stint within its Leadership Team, all of which will now be put to work undoing itself and potentially adding to a sense of encroachment.

Update: We’ve added the press release after the break.

Huawei Wants To Work With Nokia, Rather Than Fight With Them

When it comes to Windows Phone devices, there aren’t as many players compared to Android. You have Nokia, the main player, and other manufacturers such as Samsung, Huawei, and ZTE just to name a few. In a market with a […]

ITC judge rules against InterDigital in first round of 3G patent case (update)

After two long years, the International Trade Commission has finally come to a decision in favor of Huawei, Nokia and ZTE in a 3G patent case brought by InterDigital in 2011. According to an ITC judge, the three phone manufacturers did not violate the seven InterDigital-owned patents that covers various WCDMA and CDMA2000 technologies used to make their devices. InterDigital even went so far as to request the ban of US sales of these devices pending a decision. The Philadelphia-based company filed a similar complaint against LG, which chose a settlement instead of going through the courts but it argued it had a right to arbitration based on a previous licensing agreement and was taken out of the case (see update below). Still, this is just a preliminary ruling; the final decision of the case is expected in October.

Update: The story initially said LG chose a settlement instead of going through the courts, which is incorrect. We learned from InterDigital that while LG was in the original case, the ITC took the Korean company out once LG said it had a right to arbitration. However, the Court of Appeals of the Federal Circuit ruled earlier in June that the ITC has made a mistake in excluding LG. So, LG could still face the initial charges brought to it by InterDigital.

Huawei MediaPad 7 Youth tablet reaches the FCC

Huawei MediaPad 7 Youth reaches the FCC

Huawei must know that not everyone is keen to make phone calls on a tablet — that would explain why an unannounced WiFi-only slate, the MediaPad 7 Youth, has appeared at the FCC. The filing doesn’t reveal much by itself, although it shows that the Youth isn’t just a rehash of the MediaPad 7 Lite or other recent models. Besides the different antenna window layout, there’s no camera on the back; this is clearly a budget machine. We’re not expecting miracles from the Youth’s hardware, then, but those curious about Huawei’s next low-cost tablet can get an early look at the source link.

Huawei Ascend P6 Google Edition reportedly on the way

Google has just recently begun rolling out Google Editions of a couple of new handsets, like the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S 4. However, could there be more devices on the way? We’ve been hearing a few ramblings about a possible Nexus-ified Huawei device recently, but nothing has been confirmed just yet. Most

Huawei Ascend W2 shows up prematurely, packs color-matching backlit soft keys (hands-on)

Huawei Ascend W2 shows up prematurely, packs colormatching backlit soft keys handson

After the official product shot leaked in late May, we knew it wouldn’t be long before Huawei’s Ascend W2 makes an official appearance. Well, today’s the day, but as the company’s second-ever Windows Phone device, the W2’s appearance at Mobile Asia Expo was surprisingly low key. According to the spec sheet at Huawei’s booth, this affordable phone comes with a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 display (looked like IPS to us) and a 1.4GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8230 SoC (same as the W1 but faster) with 512MB RAM. There’s 8GB of built-in storage along with microSD expansion — the slot is located next to the removable 1,700mAh battery plus full-size SIM slot, all underneath the red or yellow back cover.

Even though Huawei doesn’t hide the fact that the W2 is a low-cost device, it’s actually not too shabby. Most notably, the three usual soft keys are color backlit and will match your desired theme in Windows Phone 8. As a bonus, the touchscreen has a glove mode — as featured on several other more recent Huawei phones — for the cold winter days. There’s still no price or date announced just yet, but since this particular model packs a TD-SCDMA radio for China Mobile, folks outside China will have to wait for the WCDMA variant. For now, we have a hands-on video for you after the break.
